Wow... that is ridiculous...
Can't say I'm surprised though.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
If you read it you will notice you have to have a sub for SWG to play...Looks like a ploy to me to inflate SWG sub numbers. I could be wrong.
IMO this whole things stinks of bad marketting.
It seems to me that having a game based on ANH would be appealing to gamers who grew up with the original trilogy (i.e. people who are likely in the range of 26-40 years old).
Is a CCG something that appeals to this age range? I would think it's something that appeals to a much younger audience - perhaps around the 12-13 year olds.
Wonder if there's a dev card, which nerfs all your abilities.
Pretty strange idea, especially this late in the game. May have been cooler had they done this earlier, like during the CU or something.
CCG is dying as a general rule. I recently went to the Origins Convention and there used to be nothing but card vendors and concept booths. Now they're numbers were minimal - most of which trying to hock their wares in bulk.
I am sure someone will spout some numbers from Pokemon and such but the parent companies that are running them are steering their ships slowly away from those shores. Pokemon's booth featured more of the Hero Clix concept items.
I can't believe LA is allowing SOE to ruin the Star Wars franchise in the gaming industry.
SOE has a team in Denver doing this for all their games, it's not part of the main game and most players have nothing to do with it. It does not appeal to me at all, the devs answered the question when it was asked about the impact on the main games development because of this and they said it was very part time for 1 person on the team.
meh, lots of mmo nowadays have card games, magazines, etc and other kind of those "added value" bits, some of them without added cost. From EQ, EQ2, WoW or even the mighty hardcore EvE Online have both. I don't think it's a bad thing per se, in fact it will be cool because in this case cards are ingame so you can find a cantina and play a deck or two.
I understand flammage in the veteran refugee, but this one I think it's reasonable cool add to the game. Like it's vivox (like Ventrilo, Teamspeak) that will be added next month for free to players (vivox also is in EQ1/2, wow, eve, etc).
I like how the splash page has stuff you will never see in game, like there is some Gcw going on 5 years after the fact. i also like how the cards have LOOT bigger than any other font on the card.. it's a winner!
...in six months (after you're done collecting all the expensive cards) they'll change all the rules "retiring" the cards you collected....
This is obviously Chris Fielding;s new big thing to turn the game around, This must be what he pitched at his job interview and Smedley and the rest clapped their hands in child-like delight and hired him on the spot. And so the nest of idiots gains a new Alpha Idiot.
OF COURSE this will turn the game around. Don't you guys know?!
If you can't make money after mimicking WoW then you've GOT to be able to make money using a TCG!
This fits in the general pattern of them giving you something, then after you've actually spent RL currency to get it, they take it away.
They are absolutely shameless. The moral compass at SOE was hocked for booze, blow, and hookers a long time ago.
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.
Once a denizen of Ahazi
My guess...
They are doing this as a test run for when/if the next SW MMO comes out. I wouldn't be surprised if none of the cards in this game have any resemblence to anything in the current SWG.
I'm sure if a new SW MMO were to come out soon al the marketing is planned and anything they haven't done before will be tested to see how it works. After all what else is SWG good for?
"Suddenly, thousands of Trekies whose heads are full of facts of things like the stardate when the Cardassians farted on Deep Space nine are irrlelevant." - hardcoremoviecritic
whatever they are doing now, its not going to save this game, that is unless they bring back Pre Cu upgrade servers
So, lets suppose you worked in SOE for 5 years. You would not put that in your CV because some geeks over at MMORPG did not like a patch they put in SWG.
Makes sense....
I would certainly minimize my involvement in the NGE as much as possible. Would you want to take credit for the worst decision in the history of mmorpgs?
Also, since you're the guy calling AoC a "wow killer" over in the AoC forum I wouldn't be giving anybody else crap for what they write in the forums.
