Eve or EQ2?

I played EQ1 from the month it was release until first half 2004.  My first character was a cleric on a blue server.  When Sullon Zek was created I joined  that server for the PvP.  For PvP, the Wiz was my character of choice.

Well, they nerfed my Wiz hugely with the latest PvP changes.  I spent countless hours leveling my Wiz only to have his direct damage capped at 40%.  My rant on that topic I will hold within for the sake of readers.

I'm having a tough time deciding if I should take on EQ2.  In July I started playing Eve on-line to fill the void left by EQ1.  I really like the game although it is very different from EQ.  You can compare them, but only in a general sense I think.  Probably one of the few things they have in common is the fact that they are both massive multi-player games.  The structure and game play within each is otherwise so different that I do not think its fair to say which one is really "better" than the other.

That said, Sony left a really bad taste in my mouth with their PvP approach.  The PvP in Eve seems to be very well done.  To Sony's credit however, I played EQ for quite a few years.

Finally, I can only afford to play 1 MMORPG.  I like Eve, I miss EQ, but I feel like a mistreated lover after Sony nerfed my Wiz.  So.......  Should I give EQ2 a chance or stick with my new love (Eve)?image

Are you asking us to choose for you?

Like you said before, EVE and EQ are non comparable games, even if they are both MMORPG's, the scene and gameplay is totally different. If I was you though, I'd stick with EVE untill a trial of EQ2 comes out. You can always try that one for a while and then decide which one you like better.

If you are afraid you'd might become too attached to EVE, so what? :D Then that means you like that game and shouldn't bother trying other games unless your interest is weakened :)

So just stick to eve, and try eq2 when it comes out.. not a hard one :)

I guess when EQ2 is released you gotta ask yourself...Do I feel fantasy or do I feel Sci-Fi. I go through phases when I crave one over the other during certain times.. I agree with the wait part on EQ2, $50 is alot to toss out there to see if it slakes your gaming thirst. I myself have EQ2 pre-ordered, and I quit eq after 5 years due to customer service crap. For my sci-fi-ish fix until something like EnB comes along I will stick with CoH for that quick fiximage

Well I think you answered your own question

You called Eve your new love, so that means you are having fun? If so why try something else if you can only subscribe to one at a time? Wait till Eve no longer is as fun then move on

    Cheers!

    I play Eve.  Always will.

Im sure EQ2 will have some sort of open beta.  If not then dont buy it unless you can absolutely vouch for someone's review.  Or if you like what you read after its release etc to try it out.

Im happy with EVE myself,  But im willing to try out EQ2 if its decent.  I did win a EQ2 beta account in a contest ont his site so I will know soon enough.

Yah, I'd stay with EVE, I was stuck in the same dilemma, wether I should try the EQ2 / WoW when they come out, or stay with EVE Online that I've been in for several months now. But I've pretty much come to the decision that unless something horrible happens in the continued design of EVE, I'll stay....their are many things in both these games I like (will like).....but I find the EVE Community keeps me their really good, it's a nice break from many mmorpg communities I've been in where their has been an overabundance of immature players....EVE for hte most part is a very mature community, I enjoy my corporation, it's fun to play, and their are still many many more skills to learn, and ships to aquire :P! Btw, anyone in EVE that is looking for a guild, Elite Academy is always recruiting, just drop me, Aleksandar Kerensky a line and we'll get you set up, we're always helping new and old players get into better ships faster :) Stay with EVE man, it rules! And it rules more with a good Corporation and Teamspeak :P

    Ok

1)As someone that has played EQlive longer then most of us here(1999-2004) you are probably aware that EQ puts its focus on PvE more then PvP.From all indications EQ2 will follow the same focus.

2)You are aware that EQ2 may only be released at the end of the year if not 2005.And since you have an active subsription to eve online and having fun i see no reason to dump eve for a game that will not be out for at least another 3 months if not 6.

Classes are nerfed for purposes of balance, not to piss off the player base. Why people fail to see that is beyond me. It isn't personal.

EQ has never ever been a PvP intended game from the getgo. The original intent behind EQ was it to be a PvE (or PvM) game. Alas, EQ2 will also NOT be intended as a PvP game. There might be PvP servers, but that is still not the same as designing a game from the ground up as a PvP intended game. If you are searching for real PvP games aka games that were intended to have PvP from creation,

      - check out Anarchy Online which right now has the best PvP out of every MMORPG. There are 200 levels, but you can engage in PvP roughly around level 40 and have a very nice chance of killing other players levels 30 to 60. In AO you can take land, keep land, defend your land, even while offline or off adventuring somewhere else. And players do have a very nice chance of killing much higher level players.

      - Also check out Dark Age of Camelot. It has notably intresting PvP (second best after AO, only because AO has more PvP features.)  But you have to powerlevel like mad to reach level 48-50 to make the PvP worth it. If you are lower than level 48 you will automatically die from anyone level 48 - 50.

      - Star Wars Galaxies theoretically could have the best ever PvP, or be tied with AO as having the best PvP. The only problem with SWG is there is no concrete reason to PvP. BUT if you play SWG on an unofficial PvP server, and are in a well known guild (like the incredible Pax Imperious  and/or the incredible KOTOR ) then the SWG PvP will shine. SWG allows you to have your own private NPC army to help protect you. There is nowhere in the entire game you are safe. You can kill anyone anywhere at any time - as long as you and your enemy are in opposing factions. (Rebel vs Imperial.) I won't go into details about Overt and Covert and TEF. But if you join a faction, just expect to kill and/or be killed and you will not be caught off guard. And new 1 month old players have a perfectly nice chance to kill veteran players who have been playing for 1+ years.

      - EvE Online has some intresting and unusual PvP also. I have only scratched the surface of PvP in EvE though. But from what I've read, heard, and talks with uber-high level players in EvE, the mid and high level PvP is worth it. (Mid and high level meaning how much knowledge about PvP, and experience in PvP those players have. Since in EvE having the biggest, baddest, most tricked out ship does not mean automatically winning. Plus there is soooo much possible strategy in PvP in EvE!)

I'm having a tough time deciding if I should take on EQ2.  In July I started playing Eve on-line to fill the void left by EQ1.  I really like the game although it is very different from EQ.  You can compare them, but only in a general sense I think.

EvE has been out for over 1+ years. EQ2 has not released yet. IMHO there is no way to compare them since no one has ever played EQ2. Actually playing it, experiencing it, means a heck of a lot more than reading what the EQ2 game DEVs post about it.

Probably one of the few things they have in common is the fact that they are both massive multi-player games.  The structure and game play within each is otherwise so different that I do not think its fair to say which one is really "better" than the other.

LOL! You hit it right on target. There is nothing about EvE and EQ2 that can be compared. That is how different both games are from each other (even IF what everything the EQ2 game DEVs say about EQ2 do come true.)

That said, Sony left a really bad taste in my mouth with their PvP approach.  The PvP in Eve seems to be very well done.  To Sony's credit however, I played EQ for quite a few years.

The thing is, SONY and Varant never ever intended for EQ to be a PvP oriented game. Making 1 or a few servers PvP is still not the same as making a game from the ground up PvP oriented. It is like dropping a V12 engine inside of a Ford Mustang. Sure it will be able to do 200 MPH. It can be done, but the Mustang is not designed from the ground up to have a V12 engine, to excel at performing, handling, and doing 200 mph. But it still will not compare to a Farrarri, Lotus, V12 Mercedes, Lambourghini, or V12 BMW.... all which are designed from the ground up to perform, handle, and excel at doing 200 mph.

Finally, I can only afford to play 1 MMORPG.  I like Eve, I miss EQ, but I feel like a mistreated lover after Sony nerfed my Wiz.  So.......  Should I give EQ2 a chance or stick with my new love (Eve)?image

Stick with EvE since you know for sure you like it. Also take into consideration that EQ2 is 6 months, to 8 months away from release. Then it will be 1 solid year before EQ2 works out all bugs, have enough content, works out any exploits, aka grow into itself. So you will have a solid 1 year more to enjoy EvE. You can take a 6 month break from EvE, then check out EQ2 (by then check out my personal website on how EQ2 is after it comes out image). Many gamers play 1 MMORPG, but bounce back and forth between 2, or even 3. Play one for 3 months to 6 months. Sign up for another for 3 to 6 months. Then come back to the first one. Since the majority of MMORPGs will keep player characters around for 6 months to 1 year. (Except for SWG which is now enforcing their 3 month character purge. Which ALL other MMORPGs do not do.)

The fact that you dont mention Shadowbane in your discussion about PVP shows that you have no idea what is true pvp. Please dont claim that some game has best pvp without trying out a true only pvp mmorpg, Shadowbane.

I dunno about EQ2 personally. I quit EQ1 because I was bored of it and not quite sure why I would start it again, version 2 style.

Shadowbane is not the "only true PvP MMORPG". And I left Shadowbane out on purpose. It started out OK, (did well enough to be on track to re-couping its investment money, but not a run-away success.)...... then nosedived. It's PvP game features are far worse than DAoC, far, far, worse than SWG. And brutally worse than AO. Browse the SB forums here at MMORPG.com and at Stratics.com

Many computer stores stopped selling SB months ago after it first started to nosedive. Right now it's lucky if it has 30,000 subscribers. SB exists deep in the shadow of DAoC. Could SB improve? Yes. But it has not. The amount of grief stories surrounding SB are as numerous as the players in the mass exodus from it months ago.

If you personally like and enjoy playing SB right now, then that is nice. But the majority of the PvP loving gamers in the MMORPG market long ago voted with their wallets and purses that AO, DAoC, SWG, and EvE have far better PvP features than SB.
