Looking for the inmersion i cant seem to find in any mmorpg

Hi there, im new to this forums so hello to everyone :).

Ever since i played EQ, i havent felt the same excitment about exploring, questing etc... in any released mmorpg afterwards...( eq2, wow, aoc, gw, vg, etc..).

I came to the conclusion that one of the features that really pulled me into the virtual world was the fact that it was first person view. ( with the option of 3d person, but 1st was the main focus for fighting etc...since i remember). I like the graphics of all the newer games but after a while they all seem like console games once you get over the first 2-4 weeks, besides players got so acostumed to playing mmorpgs, the little things are not important anymore....

I miss having to run desperatly out of a dungeon couse if i died it would be imposible to recover my stuff...or having to get a grp just to recover it,,,or helping another player to find his...or waiting outside a dungeon to get a grp going and making sure it was a good one couse down there was hell...etc.

Dieing doesnt seem much of a problem anymore in any game...just a small dissapointment and some xp loss, but nothing that will stop you from finding out whats moving behind that rock over there...or...should i go through this woods....what kind of creatures are here..i better ask.

Anyway...this is just a wish from a old player..that doesnt even speak english very well...so my only question is....

Is there a mmorpg out there that at least focus on 1st person view ?

Logical you cant find it if you everytime choose games that are for casuals and themepark gameplay.

Wait for Darkfall and immersion give a whole new meaning to the word:)

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

Has the game changed or have you?

Little kids can get a lot of immersion when they play with a few simple props, such as a toy gun or a doll. But as adults we need more and more trappings to play "make believe".

    Released: UO, Vanguard

Not (ever going to be) Released: Darkfall

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Darkfall isn't real. It is vaporware.

I have been playing LOTRO for the past 6 months or so and that game is just filled with Immersion :D It follows the LOTR lore very nicely and the graphics are just awesome. It really makes me feel like I  am in middle earth.

Perhaps you should give this game a try? Though it is kind of Easy mode.

I have to agree with this sentiment.  Many games allow you to zoom into 1st Person so I'd be surprised if that was the issue.  I'm more inclined to think that EQ, being your first like it was for so many others, was simply a more magical and enjoyable "place" because it was your first.  Compound that with the fact that mmos now sell the "endgame" which only motivates players to race through  rather than enjoy content and you'll have a hard time finding something that isn't immersion breaking.

If you haven't tried it, snag a trial for City of Heroes -- you'll be able to zoom into 1st person if you wish, there's no real end game to race to, and the Virtue server in particular is the officlal rp server.  Perhaps it will serve up what you're searching for.

My suggestion would be Hellgate: London at the moment, it has a FPS format and I find quite Immersive but it's not as detailed as the EQ storyline, nor is there any housing, nor is it a point and click but it's very addictive to play and unfortunetly still a bit buggy, but well worth putting up with...for awhile.
But you gotta remember that Immersion is like beauty, in that it's in the eye of the beholder*
to perceive what is beautiful and what is not, or in the case of mmorpg's what is crap and what is not.

*and I'm not talking about the AD&D monster and not the computer game.

    Hope this helps.

All of my favorite MMOs had one thing in common; fear. Fear of death, fear of the unknown, ect.

Without consequence -- who gives a flying fuck?

    I doubt that.

Hello and welcome!  The only MMORPG that comes even close to your requirements is Vanguard, which had awful problems at launch, but SOE has stuck with it and it's now playable for most people, and actually looks pretty good on a modern comp (apart from character models and animations, both of which are in the pipeline to be remedied), and has a reasonable amount of content, with no instancing, a single, seamless world, a fairly harsh death penalty, true minigame crafting and diplomacy, lots of complex classes and lots of races to choose from.  I think lots of ex-EQ1 players have found a "spiritual successor" to EQ1 in VG, although it's still too easy for some.

I'm not sure of your vg stand for Vanguard but what you describe in your needs does sound as if you MIGHT enjoy Vanguard, but keep in mind to go in with a open-mind, kinda try to think similair to how you entered EQ. I'm not talking from current experiance with the game, but just thought it might be something you "could" enjoy.

    Roma victor,

its low on players its a bit boring for a fighter newb, it has a few bugs and its content is low. But with all that said its one hell of a sandbox game,900 zones no lvl's all skill based,no class's, no instance.build anything kill anyone be anything and God dammit dont die it sucks.

The game is vary connected to the forums, post there as a newb,Find help ! someone will respond. The start in that game is horrible but i think its ment to be like that, can you make it? who will you be ? where will you go? how will you support your self,.? theres no instant action and no free rides when your by your self.

Sad but true? its by far not finished,is it playable? YES. it all depends on how bad you want to play in a sandbox world. If your a crafter type and can handle a harsh unforgiving world, then you may find your self hooked.

Sorry for briefing derailing this thread, but people that say this kind of stuff are just outright annoying. You saying Darkfall is vaporware is one thing, but saying it isn't REAL is another.

The comment is just as absurd if I said, "LORTO is fake". Obviously is isn't. Just as LORTO has screenshots and videos, so does Darkfall. Will Darkfall be released? That is unsure, but it is not FAKE so STOP saying that it is.

Concerning the thread, I feel your pain.. as I was an EQ1 player and I miss that immersion.

    Blessings,

    MMO migrant.

Currently MMOs try to cator to Hardcore raiders and casual solo-players. The people that fall inbetween are basically screwed. Most people don't care about immersion, they just want to get their basically imaginary level and have shiny pixelated weapons to show off to everyone how great they are. Or they want to chill out and play a mindless grind game with friends. The people that just want to be immersed and enjoy the game world are forgotten.

  • Yeah, I would also love to be immersed into the world and not just get awesome new gear...that is kinda boring to me.

Welcome to MMORPG.com Varcolac, refuge to all those who seek the perfect MMORPG, but are unable to find it, because it does not exist.  Interestingly, a lot of those seekers (myself included) are EQ vets.

It's frustrating for me, and you may feel it too, but despite the growing popularity of MMOs, I believe they are evolving in the wrong direction, i.e. they are actually devolving.  Everything seems to be trending towards easier, shorter, simpler.  Faster leveling, lighter death penalty, ultra solo friendly.  Newer players seem to prefer it, but to me, it uttlerly destroys immersion.

So sit back and get comfortable and wait with the rest of us.  And wait, and wait...

  • I play mmo's because I think they are more immersion...wel atleast that's why I started to play them in the first place for. They felt more like an alive world and such, but I cannot find a game like this at all anymore. I figured AoC's graphics would pull the immersion for me, but it definitely did not. I wish someone knew a game like this. Actually I think most people want a sandbox games not because they want the variety, but because it immerses them better, and they want to be immersed.

I bought that game and have yet to play it (upgrading to new computer). Why is it not on this website?

That may only mean one thing: MMOs are leaning towards the direction of MUDs. Yay!!

On a serious note, how many mmos have these types of player reviews?:

The level of detail in the game is incredible and the sheer size of

the world is astounding. The staff in the game are very friendly, and

actually listen to the input of every player, even those who are

    jerks. Like me. :D

During my time with Unwritten Legends, my character rose to a

position of power and some small prestige, and also influenced major

events, in both the in character world and game policies. I've

never really been involved with a game that allowed such a high level

    of influence from its players.

Wow! Looks like a lot of ex-EQ players are looking for the same thing. So was I until a few weeks ago when I stumbled across something that seemed to fit the bill. That something was Wurm Online.

Now, it doesn't have the ultra-fancy graphics and animations of the better known games but it does offer that all-important feeling of immersion in a new world. This game is more of a sandbox for those who prefer crafting to combat, although it does have an element of combat in it. I tried the game and almost gave up on it as it's so free-form but I persevered and I'm now quite hooked. It could be described as being 'frustratingly addictive' and it's very satisfying when you manage to make your first wooden cart :)

The game is free, it runs using a Java client and uses OpenGL instead of DirectX. I'd recommend that you try it as it's also free. If you want to develop your character further then you can convert your subscription to a premium one. This removes the cap to the skills giving you more flexibility.

I hope this helps and that you find what you are looking for. Good luck!
