It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Battle Systems ? Challenging ?

In every MMO game its the same...
To attack someone just click on him, to use a spell click on it and the one you want to use it on...

And thats pretty much how it goes... And it gets a little boring that way... Not to mention the level usually decides the outcome from the start....

Now what if you made a little more "challenging" battle system. F.x adding a joystick(imagine PS2) and put the battlesystem up like 'Tekken' so that you have to do button combinations to execute skills and movements. In this way battle can be more exiting, challenging and the outcome doesnt neseceraly have to be decided from the start. Also the game 'Oni' has a little more advanced battle system even though it doesnt need a joystick. If you ever seen 'Naruto' you know that they have to preforme "hand seals" to execute a skill, think of it like that too.

Think its a good idea ?

.. yeah and if anyone DO know of a MMO game like what i discribed i would really like to know ^_^ thx.

It is a terrible idea. I know where you are coming from with this, but it can't work. It will lag too much and cause too many problems.

On a side note, play Everquest II or Guild Wars. Both praise their battle systems.

why did you have to say Tekken? Tekken has to crappiest and slowest fight system out of any game.

Tekken has a good fighting system, for a fighting game...

Here is the main problem I see with this: in order to do it without lag the move combination would be done on the client's side...why is this a problem? Can we say macro? People would set it up to hit one button and do it for them. This would give them a huge edge in any form of combat whether it be pvp or maybe stealing your kills etc.

Another small side-note would be everyone needs to have a joystick of some kind or a special controller. That or just make it a combination of keyboard keys which would leave out a lot of buttons to use for shortcuts. And when I'm playing a MMO I like my shortcuts. ;)

The last problem would be money. The average MMO user doesn't want to have to play an adrenaline pumped, key mashing, combo swinging game. Heck, the average user couldn't use a system like that. Most MMO users aren't that skilled in games.

EQ2 sounds like a crappy battle system, its still stupid turnbased with spells, and a dumb attack wheel.

Hmm... this thread is probably getting old.. sorry about that ... didnt have access to the net for a while.

    Anyways...

First of all u shouldnt underestimate Tekken, it got (in my eyes) the most advanced fighting system ever. The reason for that is the good "speed - power" balance in moves. Not to mention the sidestep. And the reason for its slow(real life) combat system is, you have to use your brain, and tactics to defeat an enemy, not some kind of mindless, wild buttonssmashing...

And for the lagg, it wil be solved in a couple of years... Remember ISDN ? It was supose to be revoulutonary and it was supose to dominate the market for at least TEN years in the future. And just  look at it now. Just when it was relesed we now got ADSL and even faster connectionspeeds.

And yeah, a external joystick could be a pain for some users, but it would be more challenging. Fights would be determined on real SKILL rather then how long you have been playing or your lvl (Of course i dont think the company would like this :P ).

I bet most of the people here doesnt play Counter-Strike, but in this game you really have to rely on real SKILL. Anyway i know comparing A FPS with a RPG is insane, but i just wanted to get my point clearer...

Just found this thread but I would say (lag aside)

real time , Tekken, Virua Fighter style fighting system is the only to play, I think

Really RPGs now require very little to no skill, but a fighter style battle system would reward players at actually being good at the game, elliminating character levels, and skill levels, only real skill remains

If they can pull it off in the future then I back them 100%

Oh yeah CS is an awesome game, best free mod ever!

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

The battle system is the most exciting part of the game that i enjoy. When you talk about battle skills being simple in RPG's i have to dissagree. There is room for improvement but there is a fine line in wich area you change and how.I played for 4yrs straight games like unrealtournament[fave]/Quake/half life and even your so called CS,wich in my opinion is the #1 over-rated game of all time.Thats another topic wich is summed up simply by saying>>>CHEAT codes/botting most of any game .

In a game i played alot of..FFX1,it took tons of skills to kill the mobs, because to net any experience, you had to kill mobs around 6-10 levels above your player, and the levels were not that accurate.By this i mean a mob that was 6 levels above you is more like 8 levls above you.In the game there is tons of deaths by  even the highest skilled players, because they either dont have the makeup of a good party or there skills are much lacking.Your fighting tactics change as they would if you were fighting a real player. The mobs change aggression ,all mobs use different variations of spells wich keep you on your toes.

The skills are most noticeable, when u see panic mode. This is when a mob casts/tosses a spell that has your whole party near death.,and compounds when someone draws aggro from a passerby or spawning mob.Nope i am very sorry,a non skilled player party will almost always die in these situations.I have grouped with a bunch of very good players and come out alive from almost impossible odds,i only say almost because we did live.

There were bonuses to experience points if you could link your kills, this again takes skills and proper management of your players, man alive i tell ya its endless.I could go on and on.I could give several ideas to improve on the battle systems in RPG ,but on a whole i'd have to say they are pretty darn good. This coming from an unrealtournament fan :) .
