can u be more specific please, also im not an expert so i cant make opinions based on these criterias

  • JadKniJadKni Member Posts: 12

Not sure how to be more specific.  I like having a choice between Solo and Group PVE if that's the question, and like some raid content every once in awhile.  I want a roleplaying environment that doesn't have incurable griefer problems (See: WoW), and I want not to be forced into PVP.

Could just play a WoW PVE or RPPVE server, not all of them are PVP servers.

Edit: Also the City of Heroes/Villians is pretty much PVE oriented, they are some PVP zones, but you aren't required to visit them. Soloing is possible, though certain classes are better at it than most, its extremely easy to find a group in it as well, with some high lvl raids and taskforces.

Double Edit: By your Xfire though seems like you know about CoH...

CoX - Champion (Hero) - Guardian (Villain)
    FFXI - Diabolos
WoW - Trollbane (Horde) - Misha (Ally)

one more thing, do u prefer pve over pvp? do u like RvR, realm vs realm? and do u prefer questing over grinding?

Just go and play lots of different games and figure it out for yourself then. Why are you asking everyone else to tell you what you like? Its a bit like asking someone if a certain piece of food tastes nice. Everyone has a different taste for different things.

Basicly it seems to me that you are simply one of many online gamers who is on the slow path to the realisation that there currently are no decent mmos that will really give you what you want. None of them have "got it right" as such. You just have to take the good bits you like out of whats around and try and ignore the glaringly crap bits while you do so.

Welcome to the online gaming community.

I havn't played it in a few years, but I think EQ2 fits your criteria. Its similar to WoW in a lot of ways, but I remember it having more diverse endgame content and a far better community, which is what I think kills roleplaying in wow.

    Waiting for:

    -Games-
    -Re-Launch of Hellgate:London US/EU Servers
    -Diablo 3

    -A PvE centric MMORPG with-
-Fast paced twitch-action combat that requires hand-eye coordination, where you can manually aim your attacks instead of having to acquire/lock target(s) first.
-FPS-style WASD and mouse control that determine your overall success when attacking or defending.

Adrianus:  Heheh, yeah, I found CoX a while ago and liked it.  But eventually the content gets old and I need something new, but still similar.

rasgrix: I prefer PVE over PVP, and Questing over Grinding.

neonwire: This section is specifically for this kind of thread unless I'm missing something, so... yes, I'm asking what fits those criteria.  I'm not asking for the perfect MMORPG.  And I'm pretty well acquainted with the online gaming world, thanks :)

Ambikan: I tried WoW (three times now), drove me off every time.  I might give EQ2 the benefit of a doubt anyway though, thanks.

I would suggest: The Saga of Ryzom

Its coming back online sometime soon (company tanked and someone else bought it). While you cant jump into it now you have something to look forward too.

It has everything you want....plus the greatest community for any MMO (I'm completely serious)

Stuff I would also recommend playing, look to your left, and start with the top on the list under "Released Games"  and work your way to the bottom.

But ones I would say go for other than Ryzom would be: DDO, EQ2, Guild Wars,Vanguard.

Maybe Guild Wars would interest you? Its instance based though, but other then that it differentiates (sp?) itself from most games. Barely any grinding (if any) , solo and group (completely your choice), no pvp if you don't want any. And really easy to level up.

Then the new mmorpgs are prolly not for u since they revolve around pvp and or no safe zones, but there are plenty of quests

i would suggest Starquest online you have to look for the kills and if you PVP the wrong person fleet will come along and fill you with antimatter torpedoes but the whole galaxy is open combat so if there is an enemy you can engage it the combat content is less chance of dieing in a group but it is possibl to solo if you want if you want PVP you probally will have to initiate it or join a pirate faction but then you cant really avoide it after the first few kills

we like t roal play but we dont jump on your back if you slip out of chrater or dont feel like doing rp one day

griefing well my corp has personally griefed the one or 2 griefers that turn up out of the game

grapphics are not great but they are always being updated and improved

i love the game give it a go you get a free trial and its a free down load from the company website so if you dont like it you haven't lost anything but a few days of your time

EDIT: also there is no grind since you roll all the skills you need or want on character creation and its mostly a PVE game since not many players prefer PVP

Final Fantasy XI for PVE and some roleplay.

Apologies for being rude. I was perhaps being a bit harsh. If I had a sword I would do the honourable thing and impale myself but luckily for me I dont so I can carry on annoying other people :)

Ambikan mentioned EQ2 and if you have not played it yet then I would definately recommend it. It is a pure PvE game though mind you but you can duel other players if you want to for a bit of fun. It does have PvP servers but then you wont be able to pick and choose your PvP and PvE content then.....those other players will be able to hunt you down and if you didnt want to fight them then all you could do is.....well.....run away. The community is mostly very good for roleplaying purposes. I personally left the game myself though because EQ2 makes roleplaying a bit silly as all the evil and good players are actually allowed (encouraged actually) to play wth each other. So as long as you dont mind the fact that the game ignores its own lore (ie your elf will find himself grouping with supposedly good trolls, ogres, dark elves and other evil races) then its mostly quite good for RP purposes. Many players dont mind this aspect but I personally found it too daft to ignore as I like a semblance of realism and consistency in my games.

Saga of Ryzom was apparently pretty good for roleplaying too when it was out. I never played it that much as I found it rather hard to get into but it certainly had plenty of depth. I know it had different factions you could be a part of but did it have a PvP aspect? I cant remember.

    Miracle plx.

I think Dungeons and Dragons Online might fit the bill. They have a very heavy focus on PVE content with highly detailed quests (which I suppose is what DND is known for?) that somewhat implies or encourges a roleplaying atmosphere. Aside from very active quests and storyline, they also have a sizable variety of quests to choose from that removes the traditional "grinding" feeling most MMORPGs give. The gameplay is also much more challengeing than an other MMORPG because of the twitch based combat. The chance of success or failure in an encounter is heavily influenced by your character's action (or inaction). The PvP is optional and easily avoided - you can do the entire game and probably not even consider it the entire time.

Aside from that, DDO gives you more control over character customization in terms of strengths and weakness than probably any other MMO. Although, that also gives you room for error in creating your character but at the same time it also gives you a chance to discover something very powerful. The game has so many options that I'd easily guess that the majority of the strongest builds haven't been found yet.

The only other issues really is that it is heavily instanced, team oriented, and somewhat linear. I think to give a "roleplaying" feel they made the majority of quests (if not all) instanced. I'm not 100% sure, but unless you're the best player to walk the earth you could potentially solo the higher level quests but on a more realistic level you'll more than likely need a group.  Other than that, the only other real issue most people seem to pick at is that DDO doesn't have a persistant world like the majority of MMO's.

I also think Everquest 1 or 2 could be a choice as well. The only major differences between DDO and EQ is the combat, considerably less instances and a larger persistant world, somewhat less focused on roleplay, and considerably less control over character customization.

EQ 1/2's combat system isn't based on real-time twitch combat and is much more like a traditional MMO as in luck reliant outcome assuming you do everything properly. EQ 2 has a group "combo system" that gives a random bonus effect that may or may not be very useful for your current situation. A few bad rolls could leave you in a bad situation or same could be said for a few good rolls. Also, because the combat is this much different the games do have a VERY different feel for controls.

The world of EQ2 is persistant, you can go out and watch other people do quests rather than them all being instanced. I would also say EQ2 is probably a bit more solo friendly in some regards because DDO's quests at a higher level seem to become dramatically more difficult.

Aside from that the only reason I suggest less focus on roleplaying is because DDO gives a higher level of immersion and well, frankly it's D&D. The game is based on the series that started roleplaying so I'd have to go with it in terms of being more roleplay-friendly.

Honestly, you can pick up a free 10 day trial for D&D and Everquest is also I think free till June (I could be wrong about that) to see which you prefer the most out of the differences.

I think a few other games would match too but I have considerably less knowledge about them. I think Vanguard, FF11, Ultima Online (probably a bit outdated) and Horizons (maybe a bit old too). You seem a bit vague on details so I tried to hit a little on everything that you might think is important.
