Crafting Questions

Enforcer71Enforcer71 Member UncommonPosts: 780

I played SWG from start up until a few months after the NGE but I never messed with the crafting during the time in NGE so I had a few questions.

1. Is the crafting the same as it was pre-nge?

2. Can I still be a crafter without having to mess with the combat?

3. Are crafters even needed? If so, what are most looking for now?

I used to love the crafting in SWG, miss this game mechanic a lot and with the free trial going on I would consider coming back just to be a crafter if they are even needed anymore so any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

The process is the same.  The results you might get on the same items you made back then might be different though.
    2. Can I still be a crafter without having to mess with the combat?
Yes.  Infact, combat professions and crafting professions are seperated.  You can't be a crafter and have combat abilities.
    3. Are crafters even needed? If so, what are most looking for now?
Yes, crafters are still needed now.  Munitions and Structures crafters probably make the more popular items.   Domestics does ok with Chef and thei Tailor abilities.  Engineer is kinda lacking in popular things to make due to droids being mostly unused.
Chapter 12 is suppose to include Droid Commander which gives everyone the option of using droids in a simillar way as can be done with Pets.  Engineer will be the ones responsible for creating the droids that people will use with that.

Thanks for the reply and good to see crafting and combat are still seperated, I just cannot get into the combat of the NGE at all.

I guess I will download the game again tonight and give the crafting a go again, gonna suck to start over from scratch but oh well hopefully the crafting will grab me. That being said, anyone with an active guild need any crafters out there? Would hate to get in the game to find out I am on a low pop server and crafting services arent needed.

Crafting is still fun, in fact...it's one of the main things about SWG that I can't get out of my system.  If I never had played SWG, I probably wouldn't be as interested in crafting in games in general as I am.  To this day, I haven't really found a game that fills that same crafting niche like SWG does.  I know there are other crafting systems out there, but I can't find any that are as in-depth.

Yeah I loved crafting, had 2 accounts, one for combat and one for crafting. I loved having my own shop, decorating it up and making it unique. Some people did outstanding jobs decorating shops, houses and guild halls.

Unfortunately the crafting system is but a shell of its former glory. It's been dumbed down and without decay there is no repeat business.

Most of what Obraik said is true but missing some data to the best of my knowledge.  Granted my knowledge comes from the last time I played in Dec 07.  Any current players that disgrees with how it is today, please go ahead and constructivly correct me.

    1.  Yes the process is basically the same and stats may be different than it was in pre-cu but there is more.  Pre-cu and CU both had decay on Items.  The NGE does not.  This means that given the length this game has run most players have the crafted item and since it will never wear out there is no need to buy another.  This has dramatically reduced what will actually sale from your standard list of schematics you will grind your toon to get.  Yes, it is fun to craft still, but most of what you can craft will just sit and never sale.  Much of the crafting today (Obraik has stated in other posts) comes from combatents needing a crafter to use looted schematics.  There is a recent WS upgrade that should vitalize that proffession for a while till everyone buys one and the is no further need as they will not wear out.

    2.  Combat and trader seperate?  A combatent absolutley can not craft (except jedi and only lightsabers).  But a trader does have a combat ranking and can engage in combat.  They just have no combat specials and nothing  for combat in the expertise tree.  PVP and solo PVE they are very limited.  But can participate in groups and receive loot from combat.

    3.  This is more a counter to Obraik's statement.  Most of what is able to be crafted currently in game has already been purchased.  As it never wears out there is no need to rebuy.  DE...Obraik definately has more knowledge of what is planned for that then I.  But again if there is no reason to buy more than one becuase it will never wear out, eventually the rush to create droids will stop because everyone will have one.  Droids currently need batteries to operate.  I feel DE will eventually become just a supplier of those batteries after the droids stop selling.

Keep in mind  with the in game redeemable "loot cards" coming out with the SWG online card game, you will be competeing against any item they put in game that you would normally get from a crafter.  Some may say they will be rare and not affect crafting.  But from what I understand all these cards will be available for individual purchase at the games online store.  Which means if a player thinks it is uber enough they may purchase the card instead of waitng out the loot drop.  People have had a hard time with the 5th Anniversary badge and sith holocron drops.  I see these "loot cards" as being a big potential problem for players and possibly the powers that be.

No flames intended.  I support current players right to play as I support vets rights to criticize.  If you enjoy the game, continue to do so.

I lost everything I was typing because I guess I hit back somehow, but basically you CAN sell items as any trader profession if you are a good salesman, and some things you won't even need to peddle.  There's more non-elder characters here on Chilastra than not, and a lot of them don't know the capabilities of droids.  The Droideka rush may be over, but I can still get good sell rates.  If you factor the reduced overall population, and the fact that there are far more combatants than crafters, you might realize that perhaps your server needs your wares more than you know.

Things you might be able to sell

    For all professions: BM parts

Domestics:Full suits of formal/exotic clothing (hawtpants probably), beast food for exp gains, people food if you make quality stuff.  Many combatants buy in bulk. You have the opportunity to make clothing SEAs.

Structures: Make camps, elite grade harvestors sell for lots of money, and harvestors are always needed because people like me are always accidently letting them break.  Houses, guildhalls, I really haven't been an architech for awhile, but that stuff generally sold for large amounts of credits.

Armorsmith/Weaponsmith: Make capped armor of various types with sockets and you can make a lot of money there, I don't know how the weaponsmith system will go but if you're prepared you may make a killing during the rush.

Droid Engineer: We have weapon crafting capabilities, but they are pointless for the most part.  Avoid that.  Even the developers said they wanted to get those switched out, and the community agrees.  I find that Droidekas and Battle droids sell very well, and believe it or not I can make a killing on selling Battle Droid Chassises (chassi?) that are custom orders as decorations.

I can make sells if I try, and I can make some good sells if I stock the right things and know what I'm doing.  If you can't sell your produce in venders, take it to Mos Eisley and explain to people why it is worth buying (NOT spaming), many people are willing to pay more money when someone is willing to take the time to actually be the salesman.  I've been a salesman on accident before, and it works quite well.  Wear your produce, use your produce, endorse your product! Play on Chilastra and I'll sponer you! =D

WoW, crafters make the camps now? I remember grinding out ranger, making and setting up camps, never knew they went to the crafters now.

I am still on the fence but I need to do it I guess before my trial is over, I know I would be strictly a crafter as I cannot stand the combat in SWG anymore. I think my biggest thing right now is deciding on what server since I dont want low population but at the same time I want a chance to actually be in need and starting out new will be tough if a lot of vet crafters are around.

    Pick Chilastra, we're nice :D

Also, it sounds like you weren't informed that you get two character slots now.  I have a medic and a crafter.  I wish camps were more in their traditional form, but if you really hate combat you can have two crafters (structures and whatever else you want to do), or I'd suggest making one combat avatar and one crafter of your choosing.  It's fun.

Starting out as a crafter never really has been easy, so I'd recommend finding an active guild and taking sponsership from a crafter that's been around longer.  They can help you with pricing, resources, etc.

    1. Is the crafting the same as it was pre-nge?
I used to love the crafting in SWG, miss this game mechanic a lot and with the free trial going on I would consider coming back just to be a crafter if they are even needed anymore so any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Most of what Obraik said is true but missing some data to the best of my knowledge.  Granted my knowledge comes from the last time I played in Dec 07.  Any current players that disgrees with how it is today, please go ahead and constructivly correct me.

Actually chilastra and bria are the 2 I am looking at. I think I remembered we could have 2 characters but at the time I left one was a jedi so we never actually had the 2 slots added because we already had the second slot.

Not sure I want to burden a guild or others at this time at least until I know if I am staying or not. I will be on the free trial to see if crafting will pull me back in. I was a pretty heavy crafter back in the day so I will figure things out and I can always check shops in the areas for pricing and such.

I know for sure I wont do much combat as I totally cant stand the UI or the combat system in place but I may have one just for space combat since that is the only thing that seemed to stay the same as before and was enjoyable.

I got tired of quoting entire pages, lol.

@Enforcer71 Anyways, you can be a pilot on a crafter, my Droid Engineer is freelance pilot in space, and a rebel crafter on the ground.

I'd still recommend joining a guid, even if you're on a trial.  The community has always made this game.  If you aren't sure if you'll stay or not, I'd just make it known that you're on a trial and just testing it out.

Just wondering about your experiences with the combat, did you change your keybinding already and set it to auto-targetting?

    @Distiler Nice links, I should've found them :P

Also, any char can be "creature handler + bioengineer" throught the third expertise tree...this last one is mad "crafting" too:

Even with the possibility of getting mutations:

I played with the combat before I left, yes I changed all keys and such. I tried it one other time over the last year, wasted a month sub on it. I should of tried the crafting then but was just so disgusted with the combat I just decided it wasnt worth it.

This time I just want to craft, maybe try and bring some of that old community feel back into the game the way it used to be and if I worry to much about the combat I wont give the rest a chance so I would just prefer not to be bothered with it.

Oh, also if you had the unlocked slot you should have 3 slots total.  Deleting your jedi character slot sets you back to 2 though I think.
