New MMO

TheDuke1122TheDuke1122 Member Posts: 5

Well I haven't played a mmo in a few years, but I am looking to get in on the ground floor of a good one. I've played star wars and ultima in my day. Can someone suggest the best one that has come out in the last 6 months? Thanks.

Well at the moment youre better of waiting a few months than trying out all the crap that is out there. Guild Wars would be the best option IMO. You can try out LOTRO if youre into RP but I found it waaaaaaaaaay too boring and easy and the PVP is really a joke. If you're looking for PVP which has some meaning than I'd strongly suggest you wait for WAR or AION to release. The MMO's at the moment are bleak and really lack depth. I've heard that Vanguard has really picked up you can try that too, I've heard the RP in that game is one of the best.

As far as I know, the only playable game who is made this year is AoC. But while most of it's buggs been fixed now we are still waiting for a lot more content for the highest levels. Thats fine if you'll play slowly but sux if you are a quick leveler so it might be good to give it another 3 months.

This fall well see WAR, Spellborn and Guildwars 2, all 3 worth to take a look on. My bet is at Guildwars 2, it is way beyond the other 2 in graphics and Arenanet have some of the worlds best programmers (the main team have worked on Diablo 1 and Warcraft 3 for Blizzard before). But then WARs world is really good and don't count out Spellborn either.

Tabula Rhasa and Hellgate London is new too, avoid them, not worth the time.

Im not relley that into mmos,on mmorpg like warhammer. On the other hand their are quite a few mmos out their that are quite intertaning.

I'd say your best bet is between Guild Wars and Vanguard.

Thanks for the replies. Let me explain what I liked about my past mmo and maybe that will give you guys more info to point me in the right direction. Personally I do mind a main storyline, but I don't want to be confined and would rather have many options. I really liked the crafting system and economy in swg and old school ultima. I also don't want a game where everyone is doing the same thing and when you reach level x, everyone else at level x (in the same class) is just like you. Any more suggestions based on that info?

tabula rasa and hellgate are both quite decent unlike what was said by loki...i played the TR trial recently and noticed that much was fixed since i had played it last (which was a couple of weeks after release) but anyway theyre both pretty action oriented and considering you played ultima and star wars they might not be your kind of gameplay style. you might want to give a go at perfect world or archlord which are both F2P so it wouldnt really hurt to try, but id say P2P wise you would probably like LOTRO, D&DO(which i didnt really care for but you might), Anarchy Online, or especially Eve Online! if youd like further info on all the games I've listed just send me a message and ill get back to you I've played them all for between 1 month to about 8 months. good luck!

I would definitely recommend Eve Online then which doesn't have the BEST storyline, but it's still quite decent with a giant list of possibilities as far as piloting a delivery ship, defending the galaxy from pirates and mercs or conquering through force. the crafting system is one of if not the best i've seen, and the economy is VERY active...no one does the same thing there are many choices and you are free to dip your hands into all of them. Not many look the same in Eve considering the mass amount of ships available (each of which is unique to your race of choice) anyway it really seems to me like eve is your best bet, and I believe they have a 14 day trial going on now so you can make sure if you like it (btw eve is all about space flight, but its not entirely too technical, and even if you have trouble the community is very willing to help). heres the link to the trial if it appeals to you! secure.eve-online.com/ft/ lol hope i did that right. if not here https://secure.eve-online.com/ft/?aid=104104&bid=1 just cut and paste. hope this helps!

I'm looking into these options now. Thanks. One more thing. The only reason that I said recent games is because I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to be the only noob in the game. Do all of these games have a decent amount of new players or is it just seasoned vets?

Try out Dungeons and Dragons online its a fun game with a great story. Also, its one of the best and new player friendly communities i've encountered. the combat is fun and action oriented. Also, you'd be hard pressed to find two players that look or are built alike.

  • steelfrenzysteelfrenzy Member Posts: 147

eve is i believe a couple of years old now sadly :/ BUT don't worry it is filled with both seasoned vets and new recruits youll be sure to find your way in it...D&DO...well the reason it wasnt my first suggestion was the fact that i did see players that looked alike, but the major reason was the fact that i was lvl 3X having to spend atleast 3 hours in one dungeon to lvl....btw you have to complete the entire dungeon to actually get the experience and at lvl 3X i had to complete atleast 15 dungeons or so before i would even level...i also dont believe i saw crafting in the game but it has been a few months and i cant remember clearly...nevertheless good luck :)

(edit) oh sorry DDO had a great community and a great storyline, but those two things werent worth the mediocre gameplay :/ for me atleast.

Now that you've mentioned what you liked about your previous MMOs, I'd scrap Guild Wars to be honest. It follows a main storyline, which is very well done with cutscenes etc, but it doesn't have crafting. It's a game you either love or hate.

  • snowytechnasnowytechna Member Posts: 185

Based on what you have said I'd go with Vanguard, its very newbie friendly, has a great community, the crafting is great and the economy is mostly player driven.

Vanguard. That's exactly where I'm headed. I posted on their site, but does anyone here know where I can get a buddy key to try it out first free. Thanks.

Good choice, from what you said vanguard seems to be what you want.
