In the next World of Warcraft patch, Tradeskills will be renamed as Professions. This is more than a name change, however. Professions are getting a complete makeover:
You will no longer learn different professions by paying for them with skill points. You'll still learn them by speaking to the appropriate profession trainer. However, players will now be restricted to learning two professions. We decided to change the skill system to make it simpler, balanced, and more intuitive. The new system should allow everyone to participate in one to two professions, and create a much more vibrant market for goods generated from professions.
Players are encouraged to choose their two skills prior to the patch (the date of which has not been announced at this writing) and unlearn any other skills they may currently have trained. Characters that have more than two skills at the time of the patch will have two chosen at random. The entire post is available by clicking here.

More and more I'm starting to see the degeneration of World of Warcraft from a game with a number of options for different characters, great world detail and a large interesting number of quests, to a game with cookie cutter crippled characters and raiding/camping a la EQ.
I think WoW (and EQII) should be looking closely at Saga of Ryzom and it's wealth of playability options. To be frank, no matter what character you decide to play, you have the ability to take from any other skill in the game. People who've played above level 20 can attest to the fact that this game gets more and more complex, skillwise at least, the higher you level. The great thing about this open ended type of gameplay, especially with Ryzom, is, if you get nerfed in one type of character class, you just concentrate on another skillset for awhile. (It's not *that* easy, but you do not have to reroll if they nerf your bard into oblivion like they did in DaoC). Your main character essentially can also be your alternate character as well, as you can just work on crafting that day instead of hunting, your rocket launcher skillset instead of your magic skillset, or your hand to hand weapons instead of your two handed axe skills.
It saddens me when the WoW team starts to eliminate options for players, and make the game that much more streamlined and boring. Though it does make my next mmporg decision so much easier.
OH NO ITS THE END OF WOW!
get a life seriously its not really a big deal im glad they are doing it.
Doom and gloomers are stupid.
Good changes.

I have my reservations, I'm worried about engineering since it's supported by mining and blacksmithing. We'll see wat happens.
I don't believe you played into ryzom long enough. Ryzom is terribly unbalanced in the choices you make. Your mage is able to have an obundance of life just becuase your a 'crafter' (its the reason i stopped on ryzom.)
All in all, I think WoW should have more of a three skill system than just two.
