I've played just about every F2P game there is and nothing(Except Mabinogi) appeals to me.
Except Mabinogi isn't all that fast paced, and it's sorta new.
So, since I have a summer job now, I'm thinking of going for a P2P.
I've been looking around and I've seen a lot of posts saying WoW is going downhill, and it gets borings. LOTRO and EVE don't seem all that good to me, and a few people told me to avoid AoC.
Looks like the only one left for me to look at is Vanguard, but is with worth my time?
What I like:
Character Custom looks - I just dun wanna have a few twins
Mounts - I dunno why, but I love riding around on mounts
Something to do when I get bored of grinding
Rouge/Thief/Hunter class - Or anything similar

vanguard has everything you listed and tons more. its worth your money, trust me. only 20$ from a store or even less from amazon. i would try it the game it is definantly going up hill. just join the sever seradon and u will find a good population. it also has hunter and rogue classes...which both are extremely fun, especially hunter, i have one thats my main and i looove it. when u dont feel like grinding (which u dont normally have to do anyways) u can craft, diplomacy, or just ride around on a mount around the world of telon. this game has no instances, its just one big wide open world. i would try this game, i really think you'd enjoy it.
Hi, I'm a huge fan of Vanguard and played pretty much every mmorpg out there but love Vanguard for the difference it brings, stunning views and graphics, diversity of quests, a purpose for crafting, diplomacy adds a new angle to the experience and the community of a whole is superb.
Character customisation is there, you can select lots of diffferent races but down the class you want to be depends on which race selections u can do, but customising from there isn't that great as they took it out but new models are coming which will put it back in, but this is headed for the end of August.
Mounts - Well you can get your first horse at lvl 10 which is very easy to do, after that it gets harder very quickly
There isn't any grinding...serioiusly I've not grinded at all and I have 2 lvl 2x's, there are plenty of quests, if you get bored of that tho you can craft, you can craft lots of different things, from weapons to houses to boats to armour depending on what you want to be, blacksmith etc, or you can do diplomacy which is a card game, and can get you some rare items and lots of money if you know how.
There is a rogue class which has stealth and can pickpocket etc if that is what you want to do, one of my alts is a rogue and they are very powerful dps class, on the side of hunter there is a ranger that can fight from range and have a pet that can attack, again very powerful.
Hope that helps.
That sounds good, just about the mounts.
What kind are there and are they lvl req?
EDIT: Okay, my question was answered before I saw it xP
Does Vanguard have a free trial?
They are working on a trial island atm, should be released soon. If you dont wanna wait, just check out ebay and you'll find a copy for almost nothing for sure.
Vanguard was another hyped MMORPG that left many with eyes rolling in their heads. I wasn't invited to the Beta (an ongoing story of my life) but I purchased the preorder and launched. The first thing that started to make my mouth dry was the gaming resources (video, ram, cpu). While my PC was ready, my friends lacked the ram to make things smooth on his end. Having such a low tolerance for half-baked releases, he moved on to Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO).
The game unfolds with quests, right out of the box. They are meant to familiarize you with the mainstay of the game, looting the dead. The loot system, which we all love to hate in most games, well...it's pretty hot in Vanguard. You won't lack the tools to dispatch creeps, mobs, or monsters.
The graphics are breathtaking, but you need a nice video setup to fully enjoy what the Devs had in mind. (If you scale the graphics down, you can dismiss 99.9% of your lag.)
One unmentioned thing about Vanguard that I found interesting is that you (your character) can find a place in the storyline, per se, by doing things that no other character has done. To simplify this...You can get notariety for discovering a mountain range, a lake or some other land icon. It makes exploration worth even more, especially when riding a mount.
The game is HUGE. You can probably fit DAoC inside it, easily. I prefer games with large, seamless masses of land. It furthers my love for RP. Did I mention RP? Yea, this game has tons of it, if thats what you like. Otherwise, Vanguard is a Ghost Town at times. You may not get the feel of the Massive Multiplayer at the beginning.
The game is great and has tons of avenues for any adventurer, gamer, RP'er, or powerleveler.
Good luck with Vanguard, enjoy.
Definitely give it a try, I tell everyone to and most of my friends have ended up loving it, especially the old school MMOers.
The only thing you listed that Vanguard does not have at this very moment is a wide range of customization for your character. The customization was insane during Beta, but they apparently took it out due to performance issues. Mind you, the models look good now, and regardless they are putting that awesome customization back into the game in about a month or so, so no worries about that.
As for mount levels, you get your first horse at lvl 10, and progressively get faster ones every 10 levels from then on (20, 30, etc..). Plus, there are mount quests and racial mounts to work on, along with flying mounts and my favorite which I recently got... your own ship!
Anyways, give it a shot, i'm having a blast with the game again.
I am glad they are finally doing a free trial, although I didn't know you could get it for $20 before reading this thread.
I followed the game when it was originaly being developed, and it sounded like it was going to be a great game as it made by one of the original maker of EQ (R.I.P.). I still can't imagine how/why everything went terribly wrong - very very disappointing.
Now that I keep reading more favorable reviews I am ready to try it out.
Question is what is the spell rebuilding project I have read about at that other website?
I'm back playing VG and loving it. Imagine what a year of fixing bugs and improving performances will do for a buggy ass game at inital release. Also...i dont know where you hear WoW is going downhill lol...its still pathectically popular...hehe
But to answer your question, you have to factor in several things:
1) Do you have a fairly decent gaming rig?
Even though VG has improved alot in terms of resolving FPS, hitching, and performance issues, this game still requires alot of GPU and CPU power. If you dont have a decent computer then I would suggest you go the WoW route for P2P.
2) Do you like to group? or are you a soloer?
VG is very group oriented. If you like to solo alot then again WoW.
Pretty much most P2P fantasy genre games have mounts, rouge/thief/hunter classes, and things to do when not grinding (crafting, etc...), although character customization is lacking (though still 100 times better than F2P). Of all games I have played, I would say CoH/CoV had the best character customization.
Also...pretty much all MMORPG gets boring after awhile due to the grinding...and grinding is what's its all about...hehe...the bright spot is if you are lucky enough to meet some cool people ingame and form some lasting friendships...
Anyway thats my two cents
I bought this game at release and like a lot of people left shortly after. I had high hopes for this game when it came out and was very upset with its release. I came back in the winter for the free month and played from level 1-21. The game ran fine, but still felt like something was missing. So I left the game again after the free month. Now playing on my second free month I joined a guild on my server when I got back in. (Safe Haven) This is what I was missing from the game. The enjoyment of helping others and grouping with the guild. I feel that anyone who played EQ1 will really enjoy this game. You work as a team to complete a quest. You can solo, but you will not get the same enjoyment from the game.
Also I enjoy not seeing stupid jokes in the general chat. People will not call you a noob for a stupid question. They will just answer your questions.
Character Custom looks - VG is just the best in this aspect
Mounts - New mount on every 10 level that also can be equiped with saddlebags, barding and horseshoe that differ by stats and quality (I'm currently equiping Legendary horseshoes). There are also special mounts like Unicorn and Hellhound that is rewarded from long quest chain that involve rich grinding and adventuring quests all over the world. There are also vast amount of racial mounts that come with GU5 like spiders, wolfs etc. Personal flying mounts on lvl 50 and rented before that.
Something to do when I get bored of grinding - Many non grinding quests, huge complex dungeons that can be investigate many hours.
Rouge/Thief/Hunter class - Most diverse and original classes up to now in MMO genre including Rogue and Range.
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration
