I have been playing quite a few MMORPGs, like SWG pre-NGE, EVE, WoW, CoH and now i have come to LOTRO. I wasn't interested in LOTRO when it was released, but a few weeks ago i heard about the upcoming Moria expansion and decided to give LOTRO a try. At first it looked and played a lot like WoW. Now my female elvish warrior is level 17 and still questing in the Shire.
*(Note: i am not familiar with the englisch phrases of LOTRO, because i am playing the german client.)
I like
-the deed & trait system. It is fun for me to do all those deeds and it is just logical that an attack improves after using it for 1500 times. And it is a motivation to do quests even if they are grey so i can get that trait.
-defensive mobs like bears that give you a warning before they attack you. Makes travelling a bit easier.
-the graphics. On my 40" HDTV and with most settings on HIGH it just looks georgeous. The dynamic shadows add a nice level of atmosphere. Fighting a wolf in the moving shadow of a tree while the sun shines down on the Shire is just great.
-the instanced epic-quests.
A thing i don't like
-Billwiss-Orcs. They are annoying as hell. They flee, which makes killing them as a mouse-only-player with a melee class tedious, since i can't run and use specialattacks at the same time. The spear throwers usually don't come alone, which makes them killing solo very dangerous.
Overall i am quite pleased with the game and will be staying for a while

Glad to hear you are enjoying the game.
One bit of advice, learn to use the keyboard + mouse. As you level up you will come across more and more monsters that run away from you (this is no problem if you can use the keyboard + mouse effectivley).
Also, if you plan on grouping you will do a lot of running around in fights as a melee character. So if you don't want to learn how to use the keyboard to play you should problably make a ranged character.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
Just wanted to let you know since you mentioned it in your post that offensive deeds/traits like for a certain attack wont update if you use the attack against grey mobs, you have to use it at least against green or higher to increment the deed. But if the deed doesnt relate to one of your offensive combat abilities it can still be updated regardless, like on burglar I had to evade 500 attacks for an awesome trait and against grey mobs that went quite fast.
And yes the goblins are very annoying especially at that level when tanking 2-3 mobs is a pain in the ass. What I usually did against them is wait until I get them down to considerable low health and then use my stun so that I can finish them off before they turn and run.
It's not a matter of learning, more of dispising keyboard control for character movement. I am a console player and i am used to a D-Pad under my left thump. An alternative would be a joypad, which i have used for the other MMORPGs in combination with a mouse and a keyboard. But i am not playing on a normal PC at a desk anymore. I just sit in a chair on front of my HDTV with a Trust KB-2950 keyboard in both hands.
about the orcs....
well...one more reason to like hunters XD

Glad you are digging the game.
Also wanted to point out that you are likely playing the most challenging possible class for the control set up you are using. No real finishers that won't have you chasing after the mobs. Minst, Hunter, LM, or even Captain might be less annoying (Captains have a high damage ranged shout attack that makes a good finisher, and have pets to chase things down...the other three have lots of ranged attacks).
If you are enjoying your Gaurd more power to you. They are a fun class, I love the chains of reactives they get when they block or parry, keeps you on your toes. Those get better and better as you level. Also offensive stance and a two hander will help a ton, once it becomes available (until you get offensive stance it's not worth giving up the shield attacks imo). Might even be able to spam down those annoying goblins before they run.
However, it the runners gets to be too much with your control set up, might try one of the classes I mentioned. Hunter especially would be much easier than a Gaurd, imo.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
