Best combat system is Mabinogi and Sword of the New World. If you really think one of these others are better, you really need to try free 2 play mmos.
To be honest, combat systems are really not what you play MMOs for
to be fair it constitutes the majority of activity in mmos..
RPG combat has always been more about using the right attack at the right time and less about your position and what direction your are swinging, shooting, dodging. For instance maybe at a certain time during the fight and enemy becomes imune to physical damage so you have to kill it with your mages or perhaps a monster is vunerable to fire, but not to ice. I prefer it to stay that way as thats what differentiates RPGs and FPS games for the most part.
Vanguard, no contest as far as level based rpg goes
lolz Vanguard.
Combat is the same as other MMO's plus as a bonus you get:
· A tedious crafting system
· A tedious and unnecessary diplomacy mini-game
· Flickering textures all over the place. Clothing, flickering hay stacks/rocks, etc
· The ONLY MMO where your framerate is much WORSE in a dungeon than outside
· Bugged mining nodes all over the place
· A large world, but mostly empty
· Worst looking lakes ever. Does not fit with the rest of the graphics.
· Dreary, dull, un-colorful graphics, much like EQ2. It's as if someone placed a grey filter over everything.
· Falling through the world multiple times, mostly when swimming
· Bad animations. And if your computer is running at a nice framerate (above 50 FPS) your character looks like he is running at 20-25 FPS, so he looks shaky.
· Opening doors and the first thing you see is your characters eyeballs as you look through his skull.
· The UI can freeze up if you click the map and another icon too quickly.
· Walking up stairs makes the camera shake violently
· Missing objects such as windmills and doors, some appear when you get real close. Others, like windmills, flicker and then NEVER appear. They are completely missing!

Seriously do people go about copying and pasting this nonsense?
One thing that I have to touch on though is the "large world, but mostly empty" bit. That's kind of the point...exploration.
why I'm seeing a lot of strange responses. I have a few that topped it for me (I will stick to recent MMOs in my list)
I would go with Guild Wars over WoW anyday because at least when I swing at a guy in GW and I miss I know why. There is no random rolls. plus in GW you can dodge attacks (projectiles).
city of heroes was nice for the vertical movement and fast travel powers. An experienced vet could jump high in the air, fire off some bolts, and still move almost as fast as a superspeeder. Too bad the devs didnt focus on pvp
starport, 2d mmo, had realtime dodge / aim so actually that one almost wins it for me.
If I had to choose I guess I will go with City of Heroes .Age of Conan felt good in melee as well but it cant touch City of heroes, running at speed of light, jumping over buildings. pvp was a real rush when the victim didnt run away
i've tried every mmo that exist and i would say city of heroes/villains has the best combat system, it almost feels like an action rpg which is a good thing.
I doubt that you're even close to try maybe a few % of all mmo that exist... but then again if you count every mmo on top 20 in western game world..
Stop lying it's so obvious that you're full of bull
Tabula Rasa. The game is god awful but the combat engine is extremely well done. A lot of RPG players were put off by the added twitchiness of it and FPSers were put off by how it was just a basic RPG combat system under the hood but all in all I thought it was extremely well done. It's fast, intuitive, requires a good deal of interaction and coordination, and unlike most RPG combat systems it won't put you into a coma after an hour. I'll be the first to say it. I absolutely hate RPG combat. It requires little to no skill and with such little differentiation between MMOs nearly all of them boil down to just state application, spiking your damage, and paying attention to timers. It just doesn't take very much skill to do that. Sorry RPG fans. Plus Tabula Rasa has a fantastic cover and stance system where you get damage reductions for hiding behind objects and damage bonuses for using stances (like kneeling). If they had just removed "sticky" targeting and target lock it would have basically had PlanetSide's combat system (FPS-ish except no locational damage, you hit or you don't). My only real knocks against it.
sorry I know it might feel like I'm picking on you today but I strongly disagree. TR is far from good. all you do is click on a guy one time and from that point on it is like tradional combat. sure you could kneel for more accuracy
Hellgate London blew the roof off that game along with many others
I'm not certain why so many people feel FPS style combat is better then turn based. I guess it's the difference between liking to play football and liking to play chess. They are different styles though one is more about stratigic thinking (like commanding troops in a large battlefeild and one is more about action and moving yourself into the right position quickly(reflexes). I have no problem if people like FPS, but then call the game an MMOFPS. For me I like MMORPG and would like MMORPGs to keep their namesake of strategic combat.
True FPS style games absolutely do not take more skill to play then MMORPGs. MMORPGs simply use a different part of your brain. I play both types of genres in equal amounts so I'm not biased.
Even WoW does take some skill the combat is fairly twitchy. you seen what a pro WoW pvper has on his screne? It's bout 50+ buttons on his UI --AND-- a good pvper will memorize every single skill and bind it to a key. I do this for all my mmorgs
Also movement is factored in most of them. Some of the newer mmorpgs have realtime collision as well
FPS games sure you remember map layouts and perhaps more skill is taken into account. but discounting mmorpgs altogether as not skilled is a lie. I dare you to get into a beta for an MMORPG where theyt let you play a max leveled character I want to see how well you fare against a pro that knows his Class, strategies, and has every key bound. He will have all his attacks queued and you will be dead before you can click on something with your mouse
sorry I know it might feel like I'm picking on you today but I strongly disagree. TR is far from good. all you do is click on a guy one time and from that point on it is like tradional combat. sure you could kneel for more accuracy
You are one ignorant MMOer. No, you don't just click on guy once. If you click on a guy once your weapon still stop firing because your weapon works like in an FPS (you click to fire). And you still have the entire movement and stance system and it's not just some B.S. "You're in the tiger stance! +33% damage, -33% speed!" It's an actual stance. You drop to one knee. And until recently there was no target lock in TR so if your target veared too far away from your cursor you lost your target. And on top of all that TR featured a weapon "beading" system which simulated accuracy like in most FPSs (basically exactly like Counter Strike's weapon beading). <Mod edit>
Out of the many I've played I'd have to go with DDO's combat system.
Fast paced, collision detection, the ability to dodge melee and missile weapons, positioning and movement matter, hands down one of the best out right now.
Turbine may have made some mistakes at launch with DDO but combat was not one of them.....
is it AoC and their latest offering or another mmo?
Most have prolly never played FFXI,so they will not know that FFXI has by far the most unique and best skilled battle system.Of course after many years ,the player based have dumbed it down and pretty much try to speed kill everything, rather than enjoying the battle play.Everyone and there mother seems to think all games are a race to see how fast you can level up.
The OP mention of AOC is further fact to the fodder by showing how many players were like level 50 in two weeks.I guess the game can't be that good or have that much content if players just want to fly through levels and not stick around to enjoy any of the game.
FFXI has your piercing/slashing ideas,it also has sub jobs that throw a mix into the fray.It also has mob weaknesses, combos, magic bursts, hate control it's got it all.It has weapon skillups, shield blocks, evasion, parry, yep if a game has it so does FFXI and then some.Oh i didn't even mention that FFXI battle system is much more realistic than the typical korean god speed animations.FFXI's battle system allows for battle actions and reactions, basically it allows you time to think and react, you are not encouraged to button mash.I might also add that in FFXI some of your very low level spells are still VERY useful at higher levels[paralyze/sleep/bind to name a few]unlike most games where it is just a case of upgrading or button mashing your highest level icons on the hotbar.
As a matter of fact it is pretty much the main reason i ever stuck around to play ffxi so long, and it's story line is very good.FFXI does have a lot of other flaws but you asked for battle system ,so i pick FFXI.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
10six, Fps and Rover Combat planetside, Fps and great vehicle controls huxley, Fps and with no cone of fire and vehicle combat endless ages, Fps with jet packs
saw Huxley a few years ago at E3 now that was a very nice FPS system.
Well out of the few MMO's ive palyed id have to go for EvE. I like the way you move and the speed you go affects how hard you are to hit and how hard it is to hit your oponentt. Then there is the customisation of your ship which is pretty comprehensive with over 500 modules, 20 implants and over 50 Rigs [basically implants for ships].
Then there is the team based system where you each ahve roles which you can use to attack and hopfully win in a fight against a superior oponent [or just one that has more friends nearby].
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

The best combat system is PLANETSIDE.
Real time combat. No menus, no attack ordering, no queues, short of a lightgun its the closest thing to real combat in an MMO.
Now, everything else about Planetside may be horrible, but it's combat is aces.
I doubt that you're even close to try maybe a few % of all mmo that exist... but then again if you count every mmo on top 20 in western game world..

Of the ones that I have played I would have to say that CoH/CoV has the best combat system.

My vote would have to go for GuildWars. I like being able to change my toons abilities, keeps things interesting.

Best combat system was SWG:NGE before they started the chapter stuff. You should go try it
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside
Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.

like Mabingo's combat system and its PK system is also good. i don't like PK. but in this game, i like...yeah
10six, Fps and Rover Combat
