Hello Kitty Online... will it be the WoW killer?

Why does everyone want there to be a WoW killer?

It's more likely to keel over and die of old age than another game.

Yea I dont know, I've always wondered the same question. I definetely don't think AoC will kill WoW, not because it's a bad game (it's fantastic, if you haven't preordered, do it now), but because WoW is huge and only so many people are going to come play Conan. Also the Mature rating will hopefully turn some little ones away.

The question is:  Does a game HAVE to be a WOW killer in order to be considered successfull?

Answer:  No.   So long as the returns on the product ensure that all overheads are paid off within a reasonable timeframe and the company makes profit from the product, then its a success.

It's because WoW is a simplistic, cartoony and lame excuse for an MMO and most hardcore gamers are offended by the fact that it has somehow became so popular. I for one am sick and tired of hearing how many subs WoW has and how many people play it, because I'm worried that other game developers will be looking at this as the 'new standard' in MMO's and flooding the market with cheesy knock offs. *Cough WAR Cough* I'm glad Funcom has gone their own direction and revolutionized the genre. It may have a few things in common with WoW, but no more than WoW has with every MMO that came before it. AoC is the best MMO to come out since Dark Age of Camelot, and I'm disappointed that Mythic has gone the way they have with WAR.

Hello Kitty Online won't kill WOW, nothing will. It will however take many of the players away, maybe reducing the population by up to 50% as the flood of kiddies playing WOW go to Hello Kitty Online.

Blizzard has taken many aspects from Warhammer universe and applied them to Warcraft. I really don't see a problem with what Mythic is doing, and to say the "cartoony-fell" bugs you, that is a problem imho. Good games don't need to have blood and gore, they also don't need to look like Age of Conan does. If it's a good game, why let cartoony characters turn you off? You are just ruining the fun.

Don't get me wrong, I'm done with Warcraft for now, and I am playing Conan, but I couldn't care less about if the game looks "mature" or cartoony.

Well graphics matter to me, and that's just my personal opinion on that. I think that's the measuring stick for games is how realistic they look. But yeah, there's more too it. It's not the blood and gore so much as it is the getting into character. I can't get into playing a purple elf or a blue gnome. Again, it's just my thing. I shouldn't have been so harsh on WoW or WAR, I usually don't do that, but I've been just knocked out by AoC and I am totally in love with this game, so I've gone all fanboi...lol

WoW never killed of any game, yet gathered a huge audience. Why people think you have to 'beat' WoW is beyond me.

Indeed! I agree that is the real question!

I think to many compaines/developers see WoW as the only bar to reach, in terms of subs, for its MMO to be successful. When in fact, you need far fewer subs to have a MMO make good money. CoH makes a profit. EVE makes a profit. EQ2 makes a profit. Hell, even EQ1 makes a profit!

Truth is, imo, WoW is a blessing and a curse in the MMO genre. It's opened the eyes of the masses to the fact that this genre exists while at the same time raising the bar so high many people don't see themselves being able to match its success.

IMHO Conan won't come close to WoW subscription numbers but you can bet dam skippy that FunComs gonna be makin' more than a few tasty cabbage dollars from it.

To kill WOW you need a game that appeals to the masses and also is playable by the masses on their hardware.  Unfortunately you can't teach this kind of logic in an MBA course.

Hello Kitty Online will quite simply blow WoW, WAR and AoC out of the water

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

There will be no wow killer. WoW'll still be alive in some form for years to come. Just look at UO it's still going and even the grandaddy of these games - Meridian 59 is still clinging in there.

But AoC is gonna take a nice slice of the market pie. And if war, tcos, aion live up to expectations then WoW's set for some pain over the next year. On the upside for WoW players just maybe it'll persuade Blizz to take it's finger out of it's ass. They could fire kalagan/tiglo/furor for a start.

(Pretty sure WoW's safe from Hello Kitty... but stranger things have happ...ok maybe not)

    lol

I think it would be really sad if Hello Kitty Online ended up killing anything, would sort of go against the grain of Hello Kitty, she'd want there to be peace and love everywhere.

It won't be killing, it will be assimilation!

If anything kills WOW it will be a Harry Potter MMO because of their abundant, shared target audience: small children and morons.

I'm hoping Hello Kitty Island thins the kiddies out of WoW.  It's definitely a possibility.   Same demographics.

So, from a graphics standpoint, have you actually looked at Games Workshops product in the 20 or so years it was around prior to WoW? funny it always looked like that. so technically WoW stole their graphical style long before GamesWorkshop had Mythic create an MMO for them.

"We aren't going to ... Period. End of statement."

    ya. ok. whatever.

but what do i know, i'm only a vanbois i'm told.

Graphics is not necessarily what wins the game or the game player.

I for one don't play a PSP even though its graphically superior and last I counted there were a lot more NDS and gameboys than PSP and PS3 put together.

I remember checking Hello Kitty Online out when some people were saying "Hello Kitty Online ---->" on the EVE forums, and I have to say, I think it looks like a damn good game!

Actually I predict the opposite.  It is the 'kiddies' who have a need and desire to "be too cool" for something.  The 'kiddies' will move on to the next latest and greatest scantily clad-heroines that impose the most blood and gore on their opponents.  Hello Kitty will be a safe place for me and others who will pop into the game with an, "eh?  Why not" kind of attitude and may like it because we're not told how 'leet' they are or 'cn u give me 1 g plz?!?!?"
