I had exactly the same problem, but I did get something positive from it... When I asked in chat if there was any way I could increase the text size so I could play at 1600x1200, all I got were unhelpful comments and cliquey insults like "get some glasses". If it hadn't been for the ridiculously small text I might have played for hours before I realised what an awful community this game has!
Well, it's sad that some people have still problem with that...
It's on the NVidia card, lot's of strange tweak happen there...
Anyway, your problem is easily fixed...
You have to get in the game, then hit ESC (once logged and everything, when in the engine) on the ESC (option screen) the second tab is Graphics (I know it's hard to read it when you have THE problem but you should find it, and in the middle block of that tab, there is Display setup (in grey) the last option is Texel Alignment... it need to be put at -0.50 on nvidia cards... it's the slider btw... the only in the page... move it to complete left, all the text will become readable again... it have been defaulted there for more than one year because of Nvidia... if anybody with Nvidia cards were to move it and close their screen (they would lost half the line in the letters also...
I had the exact same problem when I started, 1 year and an half ago, that's why they changed the default from 0.0 to -0.5...
(Edit) I forgot to say that this problem is very hard if you get it before your char is set, so, you need to create a bogus char, with bogus name, get in the game, change options, quit game, restart a new char (then the text will be ok...) but with the default to -0.5, I cannot see how you could not read the text while creating your char... You should only be able to get this problem by changing graphic options while in the game, thus, after having creating your char....)
Well, sure asking in Local chat for help is not the best way, well, not right now, because of the free trial, starting systems are populated by stupid kids that have nothing else to do than to annoy peoples, say stupid thing and they kamikaze on your ship... (not that they can destroy it before the cops clean them out... )
Yet, you had like everybody else access to the help channel when starting (it open automatically) in the game, so why not ask in there? where there is people that really want to help?
Eve have a great community of mature players and those that don't want to speak to other have already moved in the vastness of 0.0 spaces to not be bothered...
So be my guess, if you don't like Eve, play something else.
Don't let a few immature players get your spirits down. There are over 50,000 players playing EvE. Are you going to let 1 to 100 morons spoil the game for you because of some airhead comments? They are not representative of the entire EvE community. Not even close. BTW I recommend you join a corporation as soon as possible to experience the heart of the EvE community. (maybe post a new thread "New player looking for a corporation to join")
You posted your question 2 days ago. Me, and others, have posted answers, and the most recent answer about the occurance with the N-Vida card with the guy who had the same problem as you, sounds like it might be the solution for you. Over a period of 2 days people have come and made an effort to extend help to you. That is not an "awful community."
