What expansion? As far as I know there has never been an offical word on any paid expansion, the supposed paid expansion that was listed on Gamestop & a few other stores sites was actually mod (2 I think?) that we ended up getting for free as well as several other modules afterwards, also for free.
As said above, there was never any expansion announced, although rumors come up every now and then because of shops taking preorders on products that do not exist...
The game is being expanded by "free" updates. So far (since Feb. 2006) we've had 7 "big" ones (called modules, they are the one usually containing the new raids, classes, races, level cap increases, big features like crafting, etc.), and a good bunch of "small" ones (usually mostly bug fixes, a few new quests, and some minor improvements to existing systems).
There was originally one planned but I think it has been bumped back till after the LoTRO expansion as that is Turbines main focus. They probably want to add more content and have the expansion focus on epic lvl's past 20 would be my guess.
This is topic is like Jason Voorhees, you kill it, and kill it, and kill it again but it just keeps coming back for another crappy sequel.
Forsaken Lands Expansion = Module 3 (free update)
The devs have explained this but I don't have the link. There is one guy on the official forums that has a text file saved somewhere with all the dev posts on it and he uses it several times a year when this comes up. Do a search there and i'm sure you'll find it.
ForsakenLands has been listed on those sites forever - they just bumped the date out. The retailers finally realized what I've been telling you: we weren't going to have an expansion in March.
As I said the last time one of these threads came out - at some point we're probably going to have an expansion pack. When I know when, where, who, what, and why - you'll know too. I can promise there will be a HUGE announcement. It's all just too fluid right now - I'm not going to tell you it's September when it could be October, or August, or next year entirely, or...you get the idea.
What I can tell you about upcoming updates is this:
- In January we're having the Litany of the Dead Part 2 update.
- In February we're planning on having an update that will feature the new enhancement system.
- In March the plan is to launch Module 4: Reaver’s Bane.
These sites have all had this expansion listed for months, and they keep bumping the release date. ForsakenLands was released as a free expansion months ago.
When we plan on a paid expansion pack, trust me, you will hear it from us first.
Yes, I was referring to the expansion listed on IGN and GameSpot. It's good they have an expansion planned. I wondered if Turbine was basically throwing in the towel like they are with Asheron's Call in order to focus on their one real success, LOTRO.
Forsaken Lands has been listed on various websites for two years.
It is module 3.
We got it a year and a half ago for free.
Nobody will take down the Forsaken Lands listings because they don't want to pay back the customers that pre-ordered this non-existent product.
I'm sure we will get an expansion pack someday after the level cap goes to 20, but they will announce it. Even Atari has enough brains to announce when a new product is comming out
That makes sense about the forsaken lands. That has been listed there forever.
I think that sounds about right. Now that the game is in much better shape content wise and has a stable player base level, I don't think they will launch a xpac till post 20 with some sort of epic level expansion. They will also be able to expand on crafting and add some more solo friendly options up to higher levels. They could throw some marketing money at the game then and it would be pretty effective.
This game would also be really smart to try to get into the xbox 360, since it would play great on a console.
Say what ya want about Turbine, but they sure are good about giving "free" expansions (updates)... DDO & LoTRO.
And don't forget AC! AC's been running for what 10 years, I think? AC2 was a major miscalculation [though most features went into LOTRO, so for them the development wasn't wasted], but overall Turbine has been excellent at episodic content.
I'm not a big fan of expansions and I love free content updates that Turbine provides but sometimes the content just isn't enough. However if DDO got a nice expansion...I think it would be great. I know I contradicted myself. Bear with me.

I doubt it'll ever be on the 360 or the PS3 (or any other console, for that matter). Porting code is expensive and time consuming, and right now, they're focused on just making DDO better. I don't think current subscribers would be very happy if they just dropped all development on future modules in order to port the whole game to consoles.
Even worse, if they ported it to consoles, they'd have to port updates to consoles, which means that any updates they have will take roughly twice the average time to complete, slowing DDO module development to a crawl.
Would tend to agree, I would have thought LOTRO would be a better candidate for a port, especially if it was one of the firsts as it could lock in a large lump of extra subscriptions on top of its existing large base. DDO is too niche IMO.
I recall prior to release Turbine was saying the purpose for subscriptions would be to secure free content additions. The content they've added to date has been pretty decent even though there were a some rough spots; Abbott.
Structures and dynamic queuing is a must and if Turbine decides to do these things this game will likely go through the roof. Everyone realize what an ambysmal failure EVE Online was considered to be during its frist 2 years?
I would like more dynamic time sinks (destructible player structures) - would you?
