Why I still play DAOC.

RvR.

When we go out to fight enemy players in this game I get a great feeling of camaraderie with my realm mates (a warm fluffy feeling if you will :) ). Whether we win or lose or flee in terror for our lives I am proud of the players that have fought with us.

There have been many many ocassions when the realm I play has been seriously pillaged by the other 2 , we would be heavily outnumbered, and yet we will still go out and fight the fight, this is also true of the other 2 realms when we outnumber them, there are still players who will come out and fight you.

Game mechanics/scenery/classes aside, its the emotion of fighting along side friends/realm mates that keeps me here.

/salute to the fighters of all 3 realms.

Dark age of camelot had the best pvp hands down imo.

No game has come even close since then.

I would still play it if the player base was as large as it was before ToA, but sadly its time has passed for alot of people. :(

Sadly so. . .I resubbed a few months ago and went into a BG to find no one there.  I cried a little bit and deleted it.

Yeah I downloaded the trial just to see how the RvR is. IDK if 14 days will be enough to get a good taste of it but I just want to see what its like so I can get a feel for WAR when it comes out.

Bang on, i think the Origins server will be hugely popular at first then sit a little higher then all the other clusters for a long time. Sadly though i really miss the old pre TOA days, damn they were fun times.

I played the game the other month and it has a horrible UI with bad character movement and everywhere was dead, the problem with these old mmorpgs is theres never anyone playing at low level. The flaw of the level systme on the whole really because whenever I'd go back to SWG or now playing EVE Online which is also old, you always can group with players and always people around. However I went back to EQ2 and the game was just dead, I couldn't get a level 30 group and just thought to myself how I don't want to play alone, even if you have mate splaying they're higher level. I also found the combat of DAOc really slow and horrible and people jsut stand still why slicking attacks, why I think WOW's PVP is ALOT better than all these other mmorpgs is because it doesn't have auto facing and you can run behind the caster so it cancels his spell and try to dodge attacks.

To me EVE and WOW have by far the best PVP out there when it comes to Mechanics, all this RVR stuff is just faction v faction and WOw has that in form of battlegrounds and I see no difference other than seige weapons which is coming in the next expansion.

Oh my comparing WOW FvF and DAOC RvR is blasphemy. Sure WOW has BG s but the new x pac still doesn t display what DAOC has and what WAR will have. It s restricted to a zone that really doesn t have an overall effect on the world. It s not the same, as a matter of fact it s not even close.

The effects on the world get old after the first time because they ain't dynamic like say EVE it's just the same old crap each time.

I disagree. The way DAOC s keeps changed hands , DF would change hands it was fun IMO. I really can t see how anyone can compare WOW s FvF to anything mythic is or has made.

I have to disagree.  WoW's pvp has an emphasis on the "Self" rather then the "realm".  Everything you do in WoW is first and foremost for your own personal benefit rather then that of the realm, and any other benefits anybody gets from your success is purely a bonus byproduct.  In DAoC the changing of the keeps would open up Darkness Falls where people would be leveling and acquiring money to purchase the crafted weapons and armor.  This would in turn boost the economy by providing the crafters with something to do thereby enriching their game play.  The PVP'ers get the satisfaction from killing the enemy and taking the keeps back as well as taking the enemy keeps as well.  The relics would boost your entire realms effectiveness in battle be it magical or melee.  Once they brought in the towers along with the keeps they provided their own bonuses such as greater exp when fighting in their vicinity and greater gold drop from mobs when you fight them in the entire realm.

Nowhere in WoW do you find this.  Nobody fights for the alliance or the horde, everybody fights for themselves.  No territory changes hands.  The battlegrounds are not persistent.  Once you make it to the end of AV and kill their final NPC you win and you get to do it all over again.  When I went into the BG's in DAoC I would be assaulting the center keep with my realm mates fighting one realm in the castle while the whole time having to keep track of the third realm and making sure we don't get ass jammed when we're not looking or paying attention.  Maintaining a keep while it is under siege took effort.  You'd have to sneak people into it with materials that you could then use to fix walls and doors as well as build the siege engines to fire back.  Having sieges of 100+ people per side, with 3 realms does not even come close to the 40 on 40 combat.

Also the casters in DAoC could not cast while taking damage.  They would get interrupted unless they were insanely buffed up to be able to cast between the slow swings from a 2haned weapon.  That is why most casters would hang out in the back or use walls to get away from the enemy blades.  There is plenty of people who move around in battles.  Not as much as in WoW but the game mechanics are different between the games and hence what's possible in one game may not be in the other.  Considering the age of the game I think it's holding up well when not considering the population.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

You would have had to have played this game back in its hayday to really apriciate it. At the time it had top notch grafix, giant game world and far and away the best comunity ever.  DAoC had by far the best pvp ( rvr ) system imo to date. You fought for your realm and everyone came to help, or you could run 8 mans or what ever you liked and pvped all day, WoWs pvp while it can be fun for a few min was strictly for your own personal gain = gear.  The ranking system in wow made you compete against your own ream mates insted of the other faction and it was all for gear and a title. IMO the first 2 years of DAoC was the best 2 years in mmo history.
