Believe it or not, we still hold the right to cessede from the U.S. now if only we can get enough southerners with big enough balls, we can make it happen, but then again, you northerners would be pissed off and find yet ANOTHER reason to invade and start another civil war (yep, you heard me right, the north started the civil war by invading a southern confederate state)
Ya know I hear of this theory before and I have argued that it was BS. (last time a State tried this it was the known as the Civil War) I even asked my Political Science professor about it. He told me " There is no clause or right under the constitution that allows or constitues the breakaway of a state from the union." "Staes may form or join, but none can leave."
I personally am sick of people screaming for a civil war. I really think these people have no clue on what they are asking for. You think Iraq anafghanistan is bad situation? if America had a civil war ......the term bad would take on new meaning....We would be thrust into a new age.
Funny, because actually I do have a copy of the declaration of independence, the constitution, and the bill of rights, I don't remember the exact wording, or in which document it's in. But it's there, I'll have to take a look at it though (pretty interesting read, amazing how much there's in there, even the language, example, choose, used to be "chuse"). Also, take into account that, if it was considered "illegal" or "unconstitutional" the confederacy wouldn't have remained as long as it did (because it lasted for quite a couple of years before the invasion)
Check your facts there bud...
Several states seceded during the interval when Lincoln had won the election, but not yet taken office (they used to take office in March, due to the weather).
Once Lincoln took office, he "resupplied" Fort Sumter (thus provoking an attack by the South and starting the Civil War) in April. That is hardly a couple of years.
And if you mean they lasted a few years after the invasion, well yeah, they were fighting a defensive war (for the most part) and had great generals, but they hardly had an ideal political system. Jefferson Davis was constantly fighting the state representatives for various reasons.
As for the spelling, spelling wasn't very important back then, there wasn't an official spelling for many words.

If you do not see the trending demand for bilingual applicants in the labor market, you are living under a rock. Obama isn't saying that America should become bilingual, he is saying that America IS becoming bilingual. Failing to encourage todays youth to learn Spanish is failing to prepare them for the demands of the future.
More from Obama:
"We live in a global economy. And, you know, I don't understand when people are going around worrying about, 'We need to have English- only.' They want to pass a law, 'We want English-only'... Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English - they'll learn English - you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become bilingual. We should have every child speaking more than one language."

How come the Italian, Japanese, Irish, German, Polish, Russian, Greek, etc etc immigrants all adapted and overcame by learning the new culture and language but we have to make an exception for the Mexican immigrants?

Not only that Cabe, but his whole line about "immigrants are learning english" is actually nothing but a bunch of BS. Believe me, I'm bilingual, I used to be a swocial worker that worked very closely with illegal immigrant families, my goal was to be able to help out the adults as best I could WHILE at the same time providing their children get a free education. Whenever I asked if they were interested in getting their GED, AND learn English so that they could advance, you know what was the answer 90% of the time? "No thank you, I'm fine with my 3rd grade education" and the 10% that said they were interested? showed up for maybe 2 classes, then we never heard from them again. So nobody can feed me that BS line that "they want to assimilate and adapt" because they DON'T! They want US to adapt to THEIR lifestyle, and that is simply UNACCEPTABLE!
Edited to add: There are many MANY examples I can quote from my experience as a social worker to give a better light on what these illegals really want, and believe me they ARE a HUGE drain on our economy, this, even my supervisor admitted, and the social work program? it's basically a sham, just another way for politicians to get money from tax payers (these were my supervisor's words, by the way, and believe me, by the end, I ended up feeling the same way too, which is why I ended up quitting).

Actually there is a clause in the Montana State Constitution that allows it to no longer be a part of the US if the US ever decides to remove the 2nd amendment. Read it here >>> Link If the US Supreme court had decided the other way regarding a persons individual right to bear arms Montanas Compact with the US under Article I of the Montana State Constitution would have been null and void therefore granting Montana the right to no longer be a part of the US.
Your political science professr needs to go back to school I think. ^_^

That is so cool, I didn't know some individual states had that as well. I'm pretty sure that it's in the constitution as well, since they do use a similar verbiage (the use of the word "null") I can't remember it off the top of my head, I should go back and read the book I bought. A good read for only 100 pages, and only a $1.00, even taking my time I finished reading it in only 2 days
tbh, we just need to declare English as the official language of America, because it is. And i shouldnt need to know spanish to order a cheeseburger from my local fast-food place. Why do we need to learn more languages if were in a english speaking country? I mean unless you travel to europe, then of course you learn the foreign language and respect the country you are visiting.

In most countries immigrants are required to learn the language if they want to adapt to the country. Why should America be different? Why should we have to adapt to them instead of them adapting to the country they move to?
It's not an either/or issue, both should be taking place. America is built on immigration and diverse cultures. We should not expect immigrants to abandon their culture when they move to the U.S. Americans should embrace and share all cultures.
English is a testy language to master for a child, much less an adult (just look at some of the U.S. citizens who regularly post on these boards for proof -me included). It will take time for immigrants to become fluent in English. Having a bilingual America can only serve to help immigrants more easily adapt.
I think what people fail to take from Obama's words is that many people are concerned about what complete strangers (who'll they'll probably never meet) are and aren't doing. Why are you worried about something you can't affect? What you can affect is what happens in your own household. You can encourage your children to learn a second language, and in doing so, you have broadened their learning capacity, strengthened their English skills, made them more worldly in a cultural sense, and better equipped them for future demands. I'm not sure how anyone can interpret these as bad qualities in a person.
They`re are two type of English..the proper British English spoken by many countries then there is the US type english which is a warped version of the oxford English which you would find in the dictionary.
So really even in the US its not the proper English...hello Mom..lol when it should be Mum. That`s just one example of the not so US spoken English.
The funny thing is that all those lemmings in the audience clapping, are too ignorant to understand that Obama is talking about them. Most of them probably don't speak a second language or even understand what "merci beaucoup" means.

yeah they are different, but i can still talk to british folk in my MMORPGs just fine. the only main differences is, are the slang words used. Like how british people call the bathroom the loof(i think, or something close to that).

First of all, I think Obama needs to be worried about more pressing issues in this country than how many languages we speak. Secondly, I have taken 4 semesters of Spanish in college. Got B average in those courses. It was tough and I pulled through, but was totally worthless as I NEVER use it. I have no friends who speak Spanish, no neighbors, no workmates, nothing. It is totally useless to me. Language is perishable. If you dont use it, youll lose it. I am already forgetting skills, words, grammar, etc. So WTF is the value to learn a language I do not use? None. Dont give me that crap either that it "frees my mind". I would have rather had addtional course in computers, history, world cultures etc in lieu of Spanish Grammar. Thirdly, Do you realize that English is a dominate/popular business/universal language in Europe? I have been to 15 countries (Some in Asia and Africa) Guess what Language we try to talk always.... right. It is kind of tough to be as culturally savy as Europeans also because we are an entire frekin OCEAN away. In Europe if you want to see another country you simply drive across the line and people speak French, Spanish whatever. Its like driving from one state to another in the USA. So being that most Americans cannot afford to cross the pond and receive some culture in Europe pretty much sums up why were culturally dumb and ignorant. On the flip side - I agree exposure to a second language is a good idea, especially taught in middle school. (Probably much easier to learn) It would have been so much easier to learn Spanish in college if I had this in my day. Plus it does open possibilities for kids to make new friends in school. And maybe they will take interest and become a translator for a firm or something like that. But for someone like me who is set in my ways and life is mapped out ...... I really only need English. Hey this is my 100th post! Yeah me!
Literature in spanish is one of the biggest and richest in the world. Spanish theatrical plays are also outstanding and available in DVD. There are several cinema masterpieces in spanish too. There are spanish chat rooms. There are spanish speaking countries to visit. It's not that the language is worthless. Surprisingly, it's you that don't know what to do with it.

It's the loo.
Don't worry, took me a while to catch on with things like "loo" for bathroom, "lift" for elevator, "torch" for flashlight, and ( this still tickles me ) "fag" for cigarette, etc., etc.
Oh, and that they say "Cheeri-o", while I eat Cheerios.

Using slang is not the same as your English. The fact remains that the true british language is spoken in Britain not the US. The US is just one of many countries which has adoted the British language and makes a mockery of it.
Every country has slang words but when push comes to shove they`re is only one true country that speaks proper English and that is the UK.

A lot of British People make a mockery of the British Language as well though to be fair. The vast majority do not use Oxford English anymore. They use different varieties of it for sure.

Why would anyone want to divide the US again, which will more than likely lead to another civil war.
Because a african american is in office? *isnt he biracial..?*

If I ever meet Obama, I'll be sure to greet him with a hearty "Hola, culo!!".
Can't we all just get along? Regardless of race/color/language?
excluding purple people..
tbh, we just need to declare English as the official language of America, because it is.

Not even going to read this thread because in all honesty, I don't blame him.

He didn't call it worthless as a language or a culture, he said it was worthless to him in daily life.
Ya know I hear of this theory before and I have argued that it was BS. (last time a State tried this it was the known as the Civil War) I even asked my Political Science professor about it. He told me " There is no clause or right under the constitution that allows or constitutes the breakaway of a state from the union." "States may form or join, but none can leave."

Looks like he was wrong. Good job.

Yes to clarify for you.....Its not useful to me. I am not degrading it.

And while many Americans have never been overseas I have experienced some other cultures. I have travelled to Britian, Ireland, and also lived in Iceland for 3 years.
