Curious Question

dreamer05dreamer05 Member UncommonPosts: 679

I used to play DAoC religiously a year ago and I loved it.  I always think about coming back and I have been seeing something on the forums about an Origins server? I looked on their web site but I can't find any information about it.  Is it a new server or an expansion? Is it a special rules server? Any information would be very helpful, thanks.

Thanks for the links guys, I might give DAoC a try when this comes out.

You know, I've been reading a lot about the changes they've made over the last few years.. I took a break to play WoW and a few other MMO's..

I'm really anxious to try the Origin server too, but I think I just miss Camelot period.. I'm going to d/l the 14-day trial and see if it's worth resubbing with my old account... Sounds like they've made a TON of improvments.

Few I spotted that got my interest:

    Bind Stones

One character can master all trades

Quicker creation times (I was one of the first few LGM Armorcrafters on Percival.. It was PAINFUL)

    Archer Revamp

New Bounty Rewards   (Bout time.. those things were bloody useless)

    New Keep Designs

Nifty new UI   (I think it looks neat)

    And... *Drools*.. Siege Towers..

Any current players care to comment on the current state of things in DAoC?

Yes please, we need your comments. Can anyone explain to me the differences in the server types? Also does the 14-day trial include all expansions or only the original game from 2001?

Seems pretty silly to only include the original game's content, but then again its only 14 days so you might not even get the chance to appreciate the added content.

the trial contains the original content, shrouded isles, housing, trials of atlantis, You also have acces to Catacombs expansion, but that comes as an extra download.

Also the state of the game right now is ... OK.  It's not the greatest as far as numbers but it is just ok.  One thing I would recommend is making a character on the Classic servers.  Classic is where it is at right now unitil origins.  Population has declined since release and all the bad expansions but the game is not DEAD.

So I should grab the free trial and head for a classic server? I'll give that a shot.

Whats the differences between the normal servers and classic? Classic just has less content (no Trials of Atlantis)? Whats the reasoning behind that?

    There isn't a difference anymore.

When Trials of Atlantis first came out, unless you were a raider in a good guild, you couldn't compete in RvR.

The people who raided the artifacts and leveled them up, and had all their master levels had a big advantage over the casual players in the RvR.

However all of that is a thing of the past.

Artifacts can now be obtained many by solo encounter, the harder ones needing only 1 full group at the most.  Which is 8 players. This is easily achieved as many people like doing the artifacts just for the fun of it, because its challenging.

Master levels on the normal servers are ran now weekly by battlegroups. There are websites for the clusters that will tell you when these will take place, it is also easily figured out by just asking players.

Long story short when you visit most forums, the most rapid and common response is to always join the classic instantly.

It is true that classic is more populated, however classic is very bland. You will have access to NOTHING that isn't player made. You will never have anything different or look any different than any other member of your realm. It is as plain jane as it gets.

People like classic because of it's even terms of battle. You can never really be any better than anyone else, so it will always come down to numbers in a fight. Whichever side has more players (assuming they know their roles) will always win.

People like normal because it offers access to everything the game has to offer. It offers challenges that classic just cannot provide. You can truly be unique and better than other players not only in skill but items and abilities.

    Those are the major differences.

    Hope it helps.

Now its even more difficult to decide on a server lol

Hmm...I'll go with classic because its more populated and thats important when starting a new MMO to me.

Been a long time since I've really played DAOC, but I'd say go Classic and learn the game.  Then, jump into Origins when ever it launches.

ToA was 1/3 of the reasons, why the classic-servers came.

The bigger part was because of Buffbots and /level 20-command.

Both killed the newbie-areas and groupplay. So new players soon became bored of the game, because there was noone to play with.

I just came back to DAoC after a long vacation.  I quit for non-game reasons 6 months after Shrouded Isles.  No other game does PvP as well, and I really missed that.  Glad to be back.

My advice:  Try the 14-day trial and grab the catacombs expansion (free, but separate download).  Roll on a classic server and play around there.   Lots of new things to make life easier and the game more fun.

Mids are stomping people on the classic cluster.  Last night we had 5/6 relics, and we've had all 3 power reilcs for over a week (go melee classes!).    If you  hate Midgard then roll Alb, they are the 2nd most active side I believe... or at least they provide the most fun to fight against.

I disagree with your reasoning on the difference between regular and classic servers.  But as far as which server to start in I would say classic for sure.
