Few questions: 

Is there a trial for this game?

How does the free subscription plan work - need to purchase retail first?

    There's a singleplayer demo floating around the web; gives you a taste of like the first noobie quests and 2 classes. It's unpolished and severely dated, but it'll give you an idea of the game. Pretty much: If you think the demo is OK, then the patched up multiplayer will rock socks even if you're playing by yourself (but is plenty fun with a few friends.)

     

    When you purchase Retail, you get the core multiplayer for free without subscription. That's Normal Mode and Elite mode, joining Guilds and the core game content along with some other nice features at no cost.

    For a monthly fee, you get optional multiplayer content including the Hardcore mode (perma death nightmare type stuff ala Diablo II), new zones like Stone Henge and the upcoming Abyss Chronicles, can be the leader/owner of a Guild and various other Members-Only perks.

    My recommendation is:

    Play the trial, if it's even remotely fun to you go ahead and get Retail since it's down to about $29.99 USD. Play online, find some friends or an active Guild, and play through the Story Line.

    Once you hit about level 20 or so, decide if you're happy with what you have or if you want more. Also, I'd say hold off subscribing until after the Abyss Chronicles hits (hopefully very soon..it's on Test Server right now) and see what everyone says about its content then to see if the $10 monthly is worth it to you.
