yeah, wow was pretty polished at launch... really the only things they fixed were a buncha balance issues and a few bugs/exploits a small beta team woulda never found. accusations of being evil aside, you gotta admit they've done what nobody else has in massively multiplayer online gaming
Having recently cancelled my WoW Subscription I feel both sides are right. WoW is a great game. Played for over 3 years. Offers a ton of things to do for pretty much every level of gamer from causal PVE to raider to PVP. I personally quit because I caught the carrot on the stick that I was looking for from it. Illidan went down. All three of my 70s are in gear more than what they need to make leveling to 80 failry trivial if I choose to buy the XPac. I also found that a lot of my in game freinds were moving on in droves for various reasons. Blizzard hit the home run with this game and for the most part do a fantatic job at delivering what people are looking for.
But that said , and being in the position of looking for something new, I wish WoW was not SOOOO dominant. There is really almost nothing out there to compare to WoW and everything new coming out is looking to directly compete with WoW. I am failry sick of fantsy myself but as that is the genre that WoW uses so it seems most of the other development houses are sticking with it and developing games for because of WoW's success.
To each their own I guess. Wow has many good things going for it but not its scarce and mostly instanced PvP.
4 BGs + arena years since release as endgame PvP is really too little for me. What little world PvP is left is ganking PvErs and incidentals. It's just a PvE centric game with no real PvP focus. Then you have to play the same BGs 2394820948230394823409 times for items.
Item based rewards all the time just isn't the best sole driving factor for pvp. Unlocking abilities or goal/story driven PvP would be better. A lot of people just know wow pvp since its their first MMO tho and are happy with it cos they havn't experiences real massive goal driven world PvP battles that are possible in MMOs.
Seems like every year they're getting sloppier and lazier. One thing that's annoying is how they haven't added new BG maps since release. AreNAH is obviously the main focus cause is requires very little developing... All they're doing is adding repainted pve gear every few months, so the fanbois and exploiters will be happy. All they added for pve since TBC was the sunwell (not including BT, cause everyone knows it was suppose to be the main focus of TBC). All of this seems to be happening since they made a certain dev from UO lead designer. I may or may not play WAR, but I hope it annihilates WoW.
Success breeds apathy. I've seen it in UO and Everquest. I also see it in Blizzard, as Starcraft II looks very dated when we see games on the bleeding edge of RTS.
Blizzard is simply going through what every other successful company goes through: the whole "don't mess with a good thing" mantra, followed closely by "it worked before, so use it again."
Some stroke of history is going to upset this game, just like the oil shocks upset the 'big iron' out of Detroit in the '70s, and consoles upset the coin-op arcade game. I can't say what it will be, but WoW will be so entrenched in its ways, it won't be able to adapt as well as those on the ground floor.

First blizzard had 4 years to polished the game, AOC have only 2 month. WOW was a mess at lunched,
Uhm no it wasn't. It was one of the most finished and bugfree MMO ever launched.
I guess you never saw the EQ launch, or UO launch or TR launch.
AoC, now that was a mess.
Well people seem to forget easily...... WOW was a mess too, the server was in paper always down they even have to give us free day of subscrition to cover the downtime. Free of bugs certainly not and like i said there are still bugs from the begining out there. Anyway now peaple always comparing new mmo with wow has it is now(4years later) and not how it was at launch......

Uhm, sorry to point out your obvious misinformed state, but WoW had no battlegrounds at release. So in fact all fo them have been added since release.

Yeah it was pretty much a mess. Classes were undertested and had major class changing changes made right before launch. Anyone remember the Paladin strike system? Itemization was horrible(cloth of the bear ftw and Mage agility gear so we can dodge those rogues). Maraudon and Dire Maul weren't in at launch. DM was orginally going to be a lvl 40ish instance. BG's and PvP system weren't in place for launch. Alterac Valley was supposed to be an open world PvP zone but they scrapped that and made it an instance. The infamous loot lag bug that made you restart the game. Balancing for certain bosses/mobs(Anyone remember doing Uldaman and getting stomped by the skull levels?). Half finished "epic" quests(Hunters, priests and warriors can bite me).
I lot of this stuff people just glossed over because it was less buggy than other offerings and it was new and exciting. You release a game now that involves any sort of PvP and it doesn't have a PvP system in at launch and it will fail. People don't realize all the crap that Blizzard has fixed/polished over the years and how many of the systems they half assed in the begining are still causing problems today.
Only reason I play the game anymore is because of my friends (RL and online). None of them will quit or try another game ...so I plug along.
It was the same for me, but when I quit WoW for Vanguard most of my frends left WoW too. They just have not gone for other game.

It's not Blizzard's fault if they dominate the field. After more than 3 years, new products are mediocre at best: lazy devs, superficial investors and immature market let Blizzard shine for their attention to details and their commitment to the audience's requests (which is mostly made of kids, ok, but that's another matter...).
My RL friends and I terminated our long WoW experience in May because of nausea. We tried AoC but at 50th level we quitted because it was boring and, for a long time to be, crippled with bugs and Funcom's apparent lack of interest in solving real problems.
Then we tried every other MMORPG on the market. No one was even remotely captivating enough. Only one would've been EVE but it's to time consuming and we've families and babies so, although we're pretty educated and mature, we couldn't afford it.
Now we're spending our summer with LOTRO: a polished and amusing hobby while waiting for WAR.
So, to sum it all, it's not Blizzard's success to make the difference. It's their concurrents' failure to show their apparent domination.
You (in this case, Blizzard) simply cannot please everyone and WoW is the perfect example of this.
Had they done nothing but concentrate on BG's over the last year I can almost Guarantee everyone here that you'd be here bitching and complaining that Blizzard sucks because they haven't come out with any new Mechanics.
Had they done nothing but concentrate on on PvE you'd be here bitching and complaining that the game catered to carebears and PvE wanna-be EQ gamers.
Had they done nothing but concentrate on PvP you'd be here bitching that they lost site of their end game and PvP was all the game is about now.
Had they not come out with any gear or made the gear to funky or different, again, you'd be right here bitching and complaining about this and that.
Does Blizzard wish they could provide every single fan, every single ounce of perfection they so direly want and deserve, I can promise you they do, as does every other single developer in the known world. Unfortunately it just not doable.
Blizzard, even with it's nearly bottomless war chest of funds, still has to make priorities on gameplay features and design. They still have to make sure what goes in the game works and that everyone is being as catered to as possible. No you may not like it and god knows no one is holding a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to play but in my opinion Blizzard does a pretty damn fine job of at least attempting to find a decent medium for every fan to get little somethin somethin.
Does the pendulum swing a little heavy to one side on occasion? i think it does, so do you apparently, and that's fair but I give credit where credit is due. Blizzard is dealing and producing for a client base never before seen by any MMO in History, the simple fact that the game continues to run well on a daily basis is a miracle in its own right.
So perhaps, if I may be so bold, it should be you who takes a leap off the proverbial high horse, try to look at a slightly larger picture and put yourself in their shoes.
Everything Rob Pardo says is stupid obvious I don't see why people think he's a genius, he's more like Michael Bey then he is Tarantino or Eastwood.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You? if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it. Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end

Anyway, I played WoW since 1 week after release and enjoyed every moment of it up until the dailies came out. After grinding so many dailies until my eyes bled, I decided that it was time to look for something else. I miss my ingame friends, but resubbing is not worth it for me.
Eventually WoW will go by the wayside, long time from now probably, but still it will happen. Carthage fell, Rome fell, it took years but it did happen. WoW is in decline in my opinion, they will get some people back with the expansion, but after all is said and done, they will realize that it is just the same old thing, new continent, new levels and new spells.
The standard MMO formula needs a boost, I cannot think of any games coming soon that may be that boost, but I sit by waiting patiently. Until then I will be in the World of Telon.

Seconnd for me AOC is doing good and they have already 700 000 sign up account in only 2 month. By the way Funcom is a big compagny they dont lack of money.
Lawl.
Funcom needed to release an unfinished game because they ran out of money (atleast thats what I'm beginning to think, that or pressure from publishers), they didn't have nearly enough customer service/support staff at launch either, patches and bugs are still very existant, and they don't seem to be very good programmers either.
You also fail to realize that 700k accounts doesn't equal 700k subscribers. It stands at about 699 999 subscribers minus me atleast. That doesn't count the large numbers of other people who have also quit. It's just a play on words that makes people think they are doing better than they really are.

Man if you ever wanted justification in calling a game crack it's dailies. Oh crap I have to work in 1 hour and I have to squeeze my dailies in I hope not too late to work. Or you're about to go to bed and you're like oh nuts I forgot to do my dailies, then you go to bed a couple hours later.
