Would you go back to one of the "old" mmos if more people were still playing it?
ive played all the big mmos since meridian and are currently playing AoC wich is a huge dissapointment and a big step backwards in mmo development. Instancing a whole world? like 90% of mmo players want seamless worlds.
I also played WAR beta, and since it is the same company that made daoc that are making war i had huge expectations but unfortunally they removed all the good pvp things from daoc in took all the crappy pvp things from wow, everything else is just constant grinding with same quests over and over, just different names. If they just made DaoC2 i would crap my pants outa joy
i for one would go back to daoc for sure if more people were playing it

No, it's like going back to dating a friend you used to.
You'll relive some things the first days but by the 3rd or 4th day you remember why you split up in the first place.
becouse everyone else left for wow :P
Well, I sort of felt the same about EQ, everyone left etc, and I blamed it on that.
But when I look back, people left for a reason, the game went too raid centric, less and less support, less GM's, rush job patches with bugs etc..
Why do people go to WoW from the game you liked? There has to have been a reason why they prefer WoW over DoAC.
Another thing is, even if say 40% did came back, would they have not left again soon after? And what about support? Would they suddenly update the game and do things right again?
There's a time for MMO, and unless MMO get updated constantly with a new engine and the world can actually change, MMO will become quiet places. It has happened with every MMO that is 6 years or more.
Well... DAoC is making the Origins server sometime later this year and I'm going back to it. As long as the servers are fully populated I'll probably be there for at least a while. Will try WAR but if I dislike it I'll just play DAoC. It still has support, if only it had the population of the old days it would still be great.
I think DAoC is my fall back game. Every time I excited about a new one and decide to try it out but find it not to my liking I just go back to it if I want a game to play or I just don't play anything and wait for the next game to hit the stores. Other then that I just work a lot so I don't have a lot of time to play games.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Yeah, thats why I would only go back if everything that made me quit in the first place, or atleast most, were fixed/resolved.
I suppose that's true if you actually think there is a game coming out soon that you will enjoy.. have beta experience to know its not a waste of money for *you* etc..
For me.. it would be more like i would date them because there is no one else to date..
The sad thing is most "old" games drove me away because they changed. Developers keep saying how I have rose colored glasses..
My response is well maybe.. but I'm not paying for the crap you're shoveling... how rosey is that?
Most new games.. don't even interest me from the start now.

I have returned to tow old games in my history (by my definition of old - a game that I had not played in more than 2 years).
The first was Ultima Online and the second was EQ1. As Waterlily stated above, after a couple days you remember why you left in the first place.
You do, however, find new reasons to stay. I had not played Ultima Online for around 6 years and EQ for around 4. I was surprised find all my old characters still there with gear and bank and everything... I even forgot how to access the bank in UO
After spending a few days with the 'old girlfriend', I decided to reroll a new character and begin a fresh take on the game worlds. This is where my enjoyment came from returning to the old game.
When I had previously played these games, I played with a group of friends. At the time, I did not have a great deal of playtime available so when I did play, I always felt like I was falling behind the pack and felt compelled to powerplay (as is still a common issue in MMOs today). Wih none of my friends returning to either game, I found I could take my time this time around and play the games as they were probably meant to be played originally. This game me time to quest and explore and do things I didn't do the first time around and I enjoyed the experience all over again.
I subscribe to the Station Pass so I can acceess EQ1 when I want to but I have cancelled UO. I do still pop in every couple months for that retro old school feel.

The game I would go back for is Earth and Beyond, I really enjoyed that game (I ran 3 accounts). I was in the top raiding guild in the game (still a member) and EA cut it short because they had no interest in it. They got stuck with EnB in acquiring Westwood and only kept it running as long the contract stated.
I am a member of the emulator community and was just playing it in single player mode yesterday. The number of members at the emulator site who never played the game is really surprising.
If EA wants to get into F2P, this is a title they should bring back. Even a low priced subscription would probably work, but F2P is what they should be looking at.
I would go back in a heartbeat if people still played.
Darkfall Travelogues!
I went back to DAoC. Far too archaic. The biggest problem is that the control keys are far too slow now. Playing games like WoW and EQ2(not to mention COD4 and others) where you can move freely and quickly have me spoiled.
I downloaded and re-subbed to AC1 a few weeks back, because I remember having a blast playing that game years ago. It was still the same game I enjoyed so much... but...
Having played all of the "modern" MMOs, I have grown too accustomed to the controls of the newer games. Pressing both mouse buttons to run didn't get me anywhere in AC1, and the UI was very unfriendly IMO.. especially when you lack tooltips and item comparing.
So instead of trying to "unlearn" all of the latest control methods, I cancelled because I was convinced I would just be forever clumsy in the older game.
I'm also heading back to DAOC for Origins. For the most part, I don't like the direction that the newer MMOs have taken. Sure, the controls and UI are better, but the games just have that sterile, themepark feel to them.
I dont mind of going back to the "Old" if they can give me something "New"...

I actually find the older MMOs more enjoyable than the newer ones. I judge every MMO very harshly and so far my favorites have been Asheron's Call, Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, and City of Heroes/Villains. The biggest problem I have had with every MMO has namely fallen in the group aspects.
Asheron's Call had good grouping abilities at lower levels; however, after a certain point players get few and far between to group with due to level differences. Anarchy Online has a similar problem; however, it's the lower levels to mid-levels that I have found are affected. My guess is that this is because of the low population the game has in general. Last time I played City of Heroes, the game world felt dead as a doornail. World of Warcraft, I purposely joined a high-population server, suffered through waiting times; however, I still couldn't find anyone in my level range from level 25-50.
I may be picky, but I enjoy the teamwork required in many MMOs. In the past, Final Fantasy XI has had these problems. However since I joined the most populated server these problems don't seem to be affecting me this time around.
Let it be known that I hate WoW with a passion and will defend almost any MMORPG against it.
Current: FFXI (PC/360)
Want: FFXIV, Stargate Worlds, Star Trek Online
Past: AC, AoC, AO, Atlantica Online, CoH/V, DAoC, Dungeon Runners, D&DO, EVE, Everquest I+II, FlyFF, GW (all), Lineage 2, LOTRO, Mabinogi, Maplestory, PSO (DC/Xbox/PC), PSU (PC/360), PlanetSide, RO, Shadowbane, SWG (Pre-NGE), SotNW, TR, UO, Warhammer Online, WoW, WWIIO
from most old daoc players it sounds like they would want to go back to daoc if more players played it :P
I am going back to DAoC when the Origins server goes live! :-)
I'd definitely consider going back to one for the nostalgia, but to play again seriously? I highly doubt it. Everything I loved in the past is just far too outdated.
What I'm playing now.
LOL good analogy.I'll add a few other reasons...Economy doesn't favour lowbies, player base are all end game now and seldom play anymore, except to log on when a raid is happening.Grouping is tough because the low-mid range player base is so low, therefore high end quests will also be very hard to complete.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I don't think I'd go back to any of the games I played to any significant extent, as I know I wouldn't stick around for long. I'd love to have enough time to go check out the titles I didn't sink any time into though. If Ryzom starts up again I'll make sure to check it out a bit more, as I'm not sure how long it'd stick around this time. Other old games... if I have time - which I doubt I will.
I can't even seem to leave old games in the first place.
I have gone back to Everquest recently, and have been rehooked. But, coming round to realizing that really I have no desire to level up when all I'm doing is facing stronger fiends with slightly upgraded abilities and perhaps a bit lacklustre aas. The newer environments aren't as perhaps compelling as the base which EQ had(with Antonica, Kunark, Velious)
other than a revamped/re-released server like DAOC is planning, no....unless we're talking about EVE.

If you quit earlier game and havent play another game then you are continue to play from the older game.
Otherwise, going back to older game seems making same mistake twice. First mistake is you shouldn't leave the game because you did not realize how good was the game but you playing another game. The second mistake is you are going back to the game because you realized there is no other game better than the old one. And, how you can be so sure about that?
Just my opinion, no offense or flaming purpose, maybe there are better reason than above.
When I leave a game I am pretty much done with it forever. The only one I have ever gone back to after leaving was SWG then they slapped me with the damnable NGE lol. Usually there is something fundamentally flawed with a game, imo, if I leave it in the first place.
Ultima Online - left because of Trammel and other things.
SWG - Left because the promised CR seemed like it was never going to come. Came back a month before the CU, didn't mind the CU but then came the NGE
Lineage 2 - left because of the farmers and the grind
COH/COV - Left because of boredom
Warcraft - Left because of grind/raids/community
Eve - Left because of the way skills progressed
EQ2 - Left out of boredom
DDO - Left because it never felt like D&D, not a fan of the Eberron setting
LOTRO - Left because Turbine keeps taking liberties with the License that makes the game un-fun for me
Horizons - Left out of boredom
Tabula Rasa - Game never hooked me, again I got bored
Vanguard - ROFL
PotBS - Never got into retail because of SOE.
The only one I could ever see myself going back to would be TR but I don't because the stay probably won't be long enough to warrant the time wasted installing and patching.

I went back to ddo about 3 months ago, determined to get a 28pt character to 16th level. Did that a couple of weeks back, and now that I have seen and done about 90% of the game I am finished with it. My subscription ended today and I can not bear going back to the level grind again with a fresh character to do the same quests 1000x. I reactivated my DAoC account and was suprised my characters after 3 years were still there. I am like a fish out of water in that game, and the graphics are just so old. I might try it again when the new server comes up, but I have no hopes for that either. I can't bear to be one of the millions of WoW again, or EQ, AO is dead to me, and the list goes on....
