I also quit coh, not enough to do to keep it interesting. And damn, what a grind, you have to kill so many countless thugs to even see your bar move post level 20. And no camps, when i grind for hours, i dont want to have to run around in a circle, i want to sit my ass down in one spot and pull from the same place to the same place. Some neutral mobs wouldve been nice too. And some more varied, non-thug mobs. And pvp. And being able to solo better. And... I went back to Daoc (as usual for me).
edit: CoH was awesome for 2 months! (1 beta, 1 pay)
I'd agree with the lack of content. It basically becomes the same thing throughout the levels, take this mission and defeat these villians with mayb a thin story-line attaching the missions. But the thing that keeps my interest isn't that, it's the group dynamics and tactics of other players and myself. If you aren't going to pigeon-hole yourself and only play with the same people every day (or solo), then it stays interesting. Each new team has it's own style. Even the guy that threatens to get you all killed, excuse me, defeated, by making stupid mistakes adds something new to the mix.
I'm impressed by their numerous types of enemy models and AI. Maybe I'm easily impressed after dealing with Lineage2 for too long. But that's a plus, always something new to see. And it's hard to beat the character customization you can do in this game.
CoH is only half a game in my opinion and it's probably planned that way. When CoV comes out it will add another interesting dimension with consensual PvP (random pking and ganking isn't very heroic or even villian stylish for a superhero game so it was wise to make it consensual.) They are doing what they need to do. First put out a product (and this product was pretty good and tight, I'm not even into superhero/comics and I enjoy it), see if the community accepts it and it brings in revenue, if it does then add more content and more content.
The support for CoH is very responsive. They're fixing problems with what they have, while developing new content, on nearly a weekly basis. They are improving the game and demonstrating their commitment to their players. And they are putting alot of thought into what they are doing. That's worth something to me.
Some free advice to whomever it applies to: If you want people to take you seriously in life, learn to spell.
The high end content was already done at the end of beta. They announced that the first update was ready before they launched the game and that it would increase the level cap to 50. The fact that this update was added was completely independent of how fast/slow people were leveling.
It was never stated that arenas were going to be added shortly after release. Just that it would be added after release.
As for content all I can say is people are just stupid. Cryptic did the smart thing made a solid game that is fundamentally enjoyable and solid upon release so that content could be added later in 3 month increments. COH is the first MMOG, with any appeal, that within the first three months isnt so riddled with bugs and server crashes that its completely unplayable and people complain about content. Content can be/is being added and you have been able to enjoy the game for 2-4 months with that expectation instead of paying to not play a broken game that youll become board with while you wait for it to become fixed. Compared to any other infant MMOG I have been apart of COH is leaps and bounds ahead of them.
Well it's just that EQ was groundbreaking, but uh, not the greatest game ever.
E&B is just another EA peice.
EvE...enough said.
And now you're loving the most contentless(yes, for lack of a better word, contentless)(and yes, more contentless than SWG) game on the market.
Don't take this seriously either. I actually played CoH for a month. I'm just having a bad day. So I'm trolling MMORPG boards. Tommorow will probably be a different story.
Well, in reply, I suppose I am not a "hardcore" RPGer. But what CoH DOES give out in spades is FUN. Agreed, not depth, but fun. And for me, that's what I came to CoH looking for. I have no interest in making the nicest wicker basket to sell on the market, or waiting for bugs to be worked out. On that front, you must admit, CoH delivered what I was looking for.
City of Heroes Pinnacle Server DaBurner (30+ Fire/Dev Blaster) DaBruuzer(30+ Energy/Energy Blaster) DaBlock(low level Invuln./Fire Tanker) BengalCat(30+ Empathy/Radiation Defender)
You're right, CoH is somewhat fun, and if that fun is worth $180 a year plus the inital $50 to buy the game have at it. Personally I can get just as much fun and action from a First Person Shooter and save a lot of money. Or if I need a superhero fix I can play Freedom Force where at least I feel like I have an impact on the world (even if I'm the only real person in that world).
I'm still playing CoH. Everquest, Phantasy Star Online, Ragnarok Online, Pristontale, Mu, and FFXI couldn't hold my interest for more than a year. City of Heroes is looking mighty promising. I have enough patience to wait for PvP (likely in issue 3) and I'm more than content with the new issue 2 content (content with content... oh I kill myself) which is currently live on the test server (especially those capes, partical effects, respec, power fixes, new animations, and new areas!). And hey, those kiosks are being put back up by the time issue 2 gets onto the normal servers (a week or two of testing and feedback from the test server should do it)! I'm really impressed by City of Heroes' graphics, battle system, interface, support/gm team, and surprisingly... the society (I love how the big nuisances thin out past the teens). I love this game's story... it's written by comic book nerds and those guys have a LOT of imagination. The higher level story arcs actually mesh together and the backstory to the game is just killer. I also like what I see when looking at what the developers have planned for the future to make the game more dynamic and immersive. City of Heroes certainly isn't the best game I've ever played, but it's good... and it has POTENTIAL. Real potential. What makes this such a wonderful thing is that the sucess I see in this game's future is NOT supported by a huge fanbase like FFXI, SWG, and WoW (WoW also looks mighty fine, but as of now it's not fine enough to tear me off of CoH) since Cryptic is a newcomer as far as I know. I never even heard of it before CoH, but I'm taking a liking to them really fast because the developers will actually talk to you . As a hardcore gamer (see: no life) I really see more good things in City of Heroes' future.
well, I know peopel quit various MMORPG's for various reasons, though I may jsut stick with CoH, its fun, hassled free (at least int eh way some MMO's are not) and I've played E&B, SWG, FFXI and AO, played SWG and FFXI the longest, quit FFXI cause I got tired of sitting for 3+ hours and not fidning a group at level 34, SWG, its an on agian off again style relationship for me, since I'm a huge Star Wars fan, right now its off again cause of the credit dupe thing and the way Sony is handeling it, but CoH has my interest pluss all the thigns that are comign in the future updates, new power sets, the "epic archetypes" new zones, as well as new looks, and customization.
Yes I will get WoW when it comes out, and most liekly Matrix Online as well, but CoH is definatly a keeper for me.
You know I just re-loaded CoH to check out the new patch. I made a Magic controller and when I got to 4th level and had to talk to the security agent for my next mission. I chuckled a little because I remembered in Beta that was the mission that was always messed up, "Surely it's fixed by now though," I thought. I took the mission and beat up the 5 Hellions, and sure enough, I didn't get the waypoint back. When I went back the Security guy wouldn't talk to me. CoH doesn't have a lot of bugs, but dang fix the ones you do have. Especially when it's as easy as cutting and pasting the code for the milllinos of other missions
Just a little fyi, afte you beat the 5 Hellions for the Security chief (or any other Security chief mission actully) your suppsoe to report back to your contact, not the security chief, and yes I was in th ebeta to
Odd to find a topic I agree with everyone on.. From the people who say it lacks content to the people who love it. My only problem with CoH was this: There were too many options. Sound wierd? Well, yeah. But from the standpoint of a fickle player like me, having so many different, interesting options with costumes, powers, yadda, it meant I never got a char past level 15. I'd get to 10, look at the charlists again, and go 'hey, I wanna try such and such with such and such concept'. Think that's the only reason it got boring, was 'cause I was doing the exact same missions(literally), at least every week.. Sometimes a lot more than that. Heh. *shrug*
I agree. Was alot of fun at the beginning and now its just boring. Cool they added more guys to fight but who cares, been fighting guys for 3 months now with nothing new. Just got boring and repetative.
After playing DAOC For nearly 3 years finally throwing in the towel i gave COH a try. I never made it past the free trial before i cancelled my accout. They still got 49 bucks from me . I found the graphics sub par considering its using an old graphics engine.. Reminded me to much of Quake or Unreal to my liking... I suppose when you go from one game with a leveling system with various NPCs to killing street gangs that really are plain that its hard to keep interest. Not having PVP was another drawback for me. I was never a big comic book /super hero follower either so the general storyline wasn't there for me either. The chat system is way out of date with the new games of today..
The thing it did have was a lack of time sinks. In games like EQ, AC, or DAOC it was a huge time sink which wasn't bad if you had the time but COH is more user friendly to those on a limited time schedule for game play. This game will appeal to many and to some like myself who prefer the depth with a storyline it is just so so. NCSoft pulled two side by side launches of both COH and Lineage 2 at the same time successfully something that no other online game company to my knowledge has been able to do. /salute NCSoft
Originally posted by MaceGriffin I got bored real qwik.Dont get me wrong the game has a ton of potential but it is just not realized fully.Let me list its good and bad points. 2.The 1st update was for the players at high levels. Here they are pushing a game for "casual players"and the only new content for anyone below level 20 is costume changes?Wooopededoooooo!!!! I truly tried to play this game and WANTED to stick with it but i was just bored with it.
These were some of the reasons I left, i mean, how does it help little joeschmoe if all the rewards are for high lvl ppl.
I quit CoH when my month just expired. Multiple archtypes in the 30s and numerous in the teens.
Ultimately it didn't keep my attention. Change the villains but it is the same over and over again. Whether it was missions or grinding it was collosally redundant. Whether it was solo or grouped. Grouping was the most fun but only when you had enjoyable teamates that kept a good conversation going.
One of the biggest turn-offs was seeing how many exploiters and griefers were starting to show up. Griefing people by TPing them into over-matched mobs to cause them deaths over and over again. Just plain childish.
And come on the reward was to collect enhancements the vast majority of which you sold so you could save enough influence for the next level of SO enhancements. What happened to the psychological principles of behavior conditioning with variable rewards? Loot is part of the MMO genre and that is a big gap in the CoH concept.
I did like the character creation/design. That was fun.
This game just did not offer enough for $14.95/month. $49 for the box and $180/yr. That's a lotta dough for a treadmill
I am still playing CoH, but most of you are right.
Right now I am just playing until something, Like EQ2 or WoW, comes along to snatch me away. I had been playing DAoC. I left to get a more casual game, something less involved. And I definately got that from CoH. It's pretty, and fun at the most basic level. But, I found myself seriously missing the content of the other MMORPGs I have played. Lack of real content and something other than missions/street running to do are going to limit this games success considerably.
Sorry Cryptic. It's really just a matter of time till Paragon City becomes a ghost town.

Conservatism.
Just old white men trying to find ways to legalize discrimination, and make the poor poorer
CoH is like a not so intelligent pretty girl
-pretty to look at
and
-good for the first week
ps i stopped playing
I quit City of Heroes because my game card ran out and I am too cheap, that and my friends quit
But yep it lacks content good thing is, is that it is content that I don't care about, like crafting
altough PvP and Super Villains would be nice, and thats what City of Villians is for
Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit
