When MMORPG was fun....

VymmVymm Member Posts: 112

I begin by stating -- this post and thread is about the way gaming was.  I may be a dinosaur in the MMO community at this time, a ripe 28 years old, but I remember the days of:

Logging in to play ONE character.  Having a limit less amount of content to play and achieve.  Grouping with the same people over and over again because we were virtual friends.  Having to earn levels, actually camping gear that matters.

Its funny how things have changed.  Its funny how even the new gamers are beginning to wonder the same things as some of the people who have been playing for years.  I welcome all the new and old gamers to take a stand.  To begin to post in this thread about some of your favorite old  characteristics about MMOs that are no longer around  -- or have hit the back burner with respect to the market. Please lets avoid the flames.  I am not here to rock the boat, but maybe more to remember days past.

I think the discussion should begin with -- I remember when leveling to the cap of a game wasn't the say all end all of the game.  I remember when it was difficult to obtain RARE items.  I remember when MMOing was about NOT having the same equipment of the guy next to me.  I remember when following directions mattered.  I remember when developers had unique encounters -- or a semblence of such.

Run with it ....

I remember the joy of no voice chat --- one leader, one voice, one message.

I remember when epic loot was actually epic in nature --- oh wait the whole raid has "epic".

I made my own content and did not need some lame questline.

I remember when MMO's where about having a good time...

The days when MMO's were about sitting down and thinking about what you are doing and enjoying every minute of it.

I Remember when raids, really were raid, not a dumbed down hand fed encounter, where everything was timed. And involved alot more than a few groups.

Does anyone know how to make a mmoRPG anymore?

i remember when you took your time leveling and having fun with your friends as you go, not racing to the level cap and then just quitting the game.

I remember when mmorpgs were NOT small squad based action combat games.

I remember when the raid leader was someone you trusted ... not 20 years old (the main reason any good guild would not have had me lead a raid back then) and actually had to THINK to beat encounters.

I remember when selling items was part of the fun.  When everything wasnt BOP -- and the economy was REAL.

God bless you sir. And damn to hell the person who thought it would be a good idea to make every item BOP.

I am sorry but to me you guys sound like a group of whining emos.

I have also had my years of playing MMOs. I was here before WoW. I was here during WoW and I'm still here playing VG while I wait for other MMOs.

What we are seeing is called evolution. Think about it, MMORPGs has a really short history. Lots of good features has been added through the years which more or less has become standardized by todays measures.

Of course there is still much left to be done. That's what I'm looking forward to see where we end up, instead of looking backwards.

I agree -- I look forward to the future of gaming.  A lot has come a great ways.  But it is the special times when you look back and wonder why some of the best features of games has gone away.

I love many aspects of WoW (better UI Mods, Original Raid Content, Graphics), AoC (fatalities, Combos, Interactive Combat) ... yadda yadda.

But at times, you wonder where the challenge the games has gone?  I remember when I wanted to group with people for their buffs (because their buffs made my toon SOOO much better).  Did you play EQ1?

SoW, Breeze/Clarity, Bard Songs, DMF, Shaman Buffs -- rofl.  I mean this was what the game was about ... creating a 5 man unit with good chemistry to go and tear mobs down.  I know this lead to a great deal of class bottlenecks, but todays system supports the individual -- NOT the group.  I would rather look 20 minutes for a Cleric/Warrior combo ... than solo my way thru another MMO.

It's nice being able to solo through games, but as I've said in the past the difficulty level is to the point where you don't build many good or bad memories of the games.  I had a lot of fun playing WoW, but I don't remember and events/stories I could tell from my experience playing the game.  In Everquest the difficulty was greater and in turn there are stories I can recall and tell about the game.  For instance I recall camping a mob for 48 hours to get an item.  It's was very tiring so it's something I will never forget.  The reason it took so long because there was a line of people waiting to get this item as it would be gone after the event was over.  Another time I recall camping for the fungi tunic with my Necro in Sebelis.  It was difficult to get to the mob that dropped it and I died many times.  I never did get the fungi tunic as the mob never dropped it.  It was a lot of fun though.  In Highpass hold I grouped with people to try and get the PGT.  Sometimes wizards/druids would come along and try to kill steal it.  I died many times in befallen with friends trying to get a claymore for them.  I think I lost about a weeks worth of experience gain there.  The Nexus was incredible when it came out.  I would get free buffs there all the time.  I have many stories from EQ, but I don't want to bore everyone to death.  The point is it had an environment that lead to you remembering the things you did in the game.

I remember when there was actually a challenge

I remember actually achieving something worth while

I remember having your heart set on an item and when you finally got it after months of work you felt like god

I remember when solo content wasn't a prime overview of an MMO

And more importantly a community that actually cared and played the game correctly

Games that really puts the "RPG" in the "MMORPG" are the games which is fun to play.

I really hope some game brings back big death penalties. Without it most thing feels pointless.

  • VymmVymm Member Posts: 112

Death penalty -- when implemented correctly -- is actually not a horrible thing.

Camping items, same vein, not horrible.  Epic QUESTS -- not FREE epics -- what an idea!?

I am sure we could go on for ages.  I love hearing people recant their tales of the past.  Anyone else have some awesome old ideas you miss?  I sure do miss a world feeling HUGE -- gimme transport has made the days of asking people for ports, hoofing it and EARNING a mount, days that have come and gone.  Do you remember the first time you were shouting WTB: port to Gfay?

Sorry to linger with this, but I am enjoying myself.  Hopefully this thread isnt causing to many people heartburn.

Cheers to the MMOers out there.

TRUTH. Its these static game worlds that ruin immersion, the name of the game in an RPG, and turn things into competitive combat games.

The thing is, they went backwards instead of forward, ripping out tons of content and in return we got better graphics. We need the content and the graphics and then we would actually have a game worth playing. What they need to be truely evolved is perfect the good content from  the past in the current graphics settings and add more content to that to make the future mmorpg. players want freedoms, not forced choices. I agree I miss the ability to create one character that can access all game content and not having to create many different classes to do so.  true evolution would give us the additional content on the one character instead of forcing choices on players. People do not need to be led around, they need to be able to do what they want when they want to do it in a game like we used to be able to. Add those aspects to the new  settings and we will finally receive an evolved game.

It is interesting as many here came from EQ1, as I did as well, and we have story after story to tell.

I could bore all with stories as well, but I feel like MMOs in general lack immersion and risk. In EQ, there was the risk of losing loads of EXP and potentially ALL of your gear if you lost your corpse deep down in a dungeon.

I remember being scared every time I walked into Crushbone becuase of the large orcs in the zone. I remember fighting through the castle to King Crush, sometimes winning, sometimes losing, and having the sense that I actually conquered the zone. What a great feeling!

It was also group centric. When I played DaoC (it was on a private server), it was rather group centric and it was loads of fun. Too bad most of the community spoke german. I eventually quit but it reminded me a LOT like EQ1.

I might go and play shards of dalaya again...

anyways, if SoE got their heads on straight and released an original EQ1 server (no post pop stuff), I'd be back in a second. I mean, not even a second. I'd read the e-mail and not even think twice.

    ....

    My $.02

    Blessings,

    MMO migrant.
