LucasFilm Registers Trademark for “Star Wars The Old Republic” Online Game

DeaconXDeaconX Member UncommonPosts: 3,062

I originally posted it in my BioWare MMO thread which is in the Rumor section, thus is rarely noticed.. so I thought I'd post it here as well.  Original post: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/151383/page/23

http://www.eucantina.net/archives/834

On July 3rd, 2008, LucasFilm filed for trademarks for the following:

Star Wars The Old Republic

Star Wars Sagas

Star Wars Legends

The trademarks have been registered for “Entertainment services provided on-line by means of global and local area networks, namely, providing interactive computer game software, interactive video game software and interactive computer games and interactive video games, all on-line by means of global and local area networks”

You can view a screenshot of the trademark for “Star Wars the Old Republic” here. It is important to note that these trademarks were registered in the same way as the trademark for “Star Wars Galaxies”. These are officially registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It appears that at least one of these titles may be used to create a new online Star Wars game. “The Old Republic” title makes me think about that KOTOR MMO everyone’s been talking about.

Credit for the screenshot and discovery of “The Old Republic” title goes to the website StarWarsUniverse.com

I'll freak out if this comes true, I feel it in my gut that it is.  One of the biggest, if not biggest IP's, needs to have an MMO. It was destined for Starwars fans worldwide.  Please lucas make it so.

Could also be nothing more than a singleplayer shooter with online capability, i.e Battlefront.

Who knows if any of this info is really worth a damn, but here's another update from 'Jawars' on the BioWare forums:

"AN UPDATE from the EUcantina post about the Trademarks:

"In a forum on Ahazi.org, a user has posted that he took a survey on surveyspot.com about a Star Wars MMO called Star Wars: The Old Republic. He lists some of the features described in the survey here. This post was made long before the names from the trademarks surfaced"

    Linkfor Ahze post:
    http://www.ahazi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10846 "

The post on that site reads:

    "

    YOU HEARD ME!

I recently took a Survey about a game on SurveySpot. I usually delete this crap but was bored. I tried to copy/paste the description but naturally it was blocked. Here is the information I can recall even though I had to agree NOT to share said information. Screw that.

Next-Gen was in the article about 1000 times along with mentioning SWG all over the place.

    Setting: 3500 years before Vader

Title: Star Wars: The Old Republic (no not that crap one you'll find with google)

    Features I remember:

8 professions-smuggler and BH stick out immediately

Functional Light side/ Dark side- npcs and others remember what you do and their reactions change accordingly.

Legacy system. When you reach top level, apparently you have the option of producing an offspring with special bonus traits and starting over...or something to that effect.

Companion: Han had Chewy, Luke had R2...blah blah....someone to accompany you. Potential for romance sticks out as something oddly unique

Fully customizable ship. Can be bought or stolen!!

No more miles of reading text. Events happen in game with full voice overs. Sounds damn impossible if you ask me.

Full grouping ala any damn MMO

Some sort of minigame that is used to influence others?? Not many details on that one.

well, there were 10 major points we had to vote on and classify in order of what we liked the best. These are the only ones I remember.

So, could we have something here?? It sounds cool to me!! 1/2 of it was "would you pay 39.99 for game and 12.95 for sub?" and stuff.

    YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!!!WOOOOT!!!

anyone else take the survey? It may still be up at surveyspot -New video game survey was title.

    Any thoughts???"

Again, take everything on the internet with a scoop of salt but hey just in case anyone's interested, here it is :)

You realize of course that this could be nothing more than a formality in case they ever decide to do something with any of these games.  It's nice to speculate, but it's nothing more than speculation.

    STAR WARS.

    DIE.

Seriously, the IP is old, worn out, now very trite and just flat out dull.  TIme to create a new universe, a new world to explore and write books about and film movies about.  Let Star Wars die.  It was fun while it lasted, now let it RIP.

a "legacy system" such as that would blow. CoX already has that for an "end game". You hit the level cap and start over. Its one of the biggest complaints the players have about the game. Its funny to think that any serious game developer would actually consider such a thing......oh wait, StarGateWorlds is

As far as I know, there was never any romance between the aforementioned "companions".

Haven't you figured it out yet?  Bioware's new game is a fantasy theme with dragons.

Nothing to do with star wars whatsoever.  So much for you hot rumor lol.

You must be talking about Dragon Age which is a single player rpg being made by bioware.

Before you all go nuts, remember that its 99.9% likely any and all issues / problems / design choices made concerning SWG were directives from LucasArts (who are so in control of anything SW related its untrue) and therefore any new SW MMO, especially one they are clearly going to be even tighter in charge of, will in all likelyhood go the same way. Lucas killed the movies by making the phantom crap, he killed SWG by adding the changes, and he will kill any other MMO in the same "But I just want my 5 year old kid to be able to play it" mentality. The sooner he lets go off the franchise the better imho.

-- Of course. Fully realized. Could be nothing, could be something.  I did think it was an interesting bit of news so I thought I'd share with the community :)

-- That's your opinion, you're very welcome to it, but you sales figures would suggest differently and thus Star Wars continues so long as there's stories to tell and money to make.

-- Yeah a system like this could ONLY work if there isn't one storyline which you must repeat with every character -but- I can see it working if the MMORPG is advanced enough to allow a completely different story experience on a second play through via choices you make in the game.

    Union

As far as I know, there was never any romance between the aforementioned "companions".

-- I don't think the person who wrote that meant any of those mentioned companion characters had romantic relationships but rather that in a game, your companion/sidekick COULD become a romantic interest.

-- I haven't figured much out about BioWare's game since they haven't really released anything. I don't know where you get 'fantasy theme with dragons' from either because as I said, they've released nothing. Perhaps you're talking about Dragon Age which is a single player RPG which BioWare Austin has been keeping well underwraps for years now and hope to release fairly soon so I wouldn't be surprised to hear about it at E3. Unless of course you know something about the MMORPG of theirs being developed in Austin, TX that I completely missed...

If you'd visit the game you'd know how true that is... on the 30days back i've talked to a few people and its all "well they're all coming back..." etc etc.

the game is SO dead that SOE needs to resort to collections and badges in order to give you something to do. its ridiculous and sad. hell, while i was in there i was told that in order to run an instance with some people i had to be keyed to do it heroic... i had a flashback to TBC

So true, I can't believe that they could get that SO wrong! Everyone knows that it was Chewy and Leia that were having a romantic affair, and it was 3PO and R2 that were "companions" if you get my drift he he

FYI, SWG is not "WORSE" the game is still running fine with alot new players come. There is still already players playing right now (i am playing it again).

SWG is most stable now then never because back during retail, everyone was exploiting and it was too easy. (i had a rancor with 400000 dmg attack....), i even got Creature handler leveled from nothing to Master within 1 hour.

The changes was quite good, and it is one of those MMORPG that allow change changes without re-doing everything.

meanwhile, i love how Star war the movie and their line goes, They didn't KILL anything. Just because you don't like it, it doesn't mean other doesn't.

Beside, the idea of "space" movie is actually a motivator to "human" kind in general. A lot people got moved by Star wars and other space genres leading them to newer invention and moving talking space. Its an inspiration.

    none

What I think is funny is the fact that even if they make another SW MMO, they arent going to be catering to the sandbox types again.

    LA already learned that lesson.

    Pre-CU FTW?

Yeah whatever...it sucked when it launched, and I sure dont see them making the same mistake again. There is more to gaming than regrinding your template over and over.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

What the heck... most stable what.. too easy?

It's just a WoW clone now. Omg this is why we can't have nice things...

    Honestly.......

I don't care what it is as long as it's a NEXT-GEN STAR WARS mmorpg. I love ALL things STAR WARS and I will give any STAR WARS mmo at least a full year.....no matter how bad it is. This very good news!

  • Force_FireForce_Fire Member Posts: 145

Any chance of an E3 announcement?

  • BdonedgeBdonedge Member CommonPosts: 59

There are some bitter ass people in this thread.

I would LOVE to play a star wars MMO. Never got a chance to play the old ones.

I honest to god wish they would have kept making movies. Just take the shitty CGI shit with it.

Anyway, I don't see why everyone is getting all pissy and attacking you with reminders about how it could just be speculation.

Well, yes it could just be speculation. Lets have some positive thoughts here. Star wars is better than anything any of you have ever produced in your lifetime.

At this point I'm kind of rambling because its almost 5 AM and me being a Star Wars nerd, I never want it to die.

KOTOR had classes and was made well before WoW.

WoW didn't invent classes. Bioware has a history of success without needing to ride anyones coatail. Go research the numbers of KOTOR sales alone, not to mention their other titles.

I would love a open skill based system but I am assuming from reading Biowares article stating their opinions of classes this game will have classes.

OMG! That MMO has a tree in it! They ripped WoW off!

OMG that character has 2 eyes! What a WoW ripoff!

Games have had classes in them since before home computers. Lets take a look at old D&D first addition pen and paper for a start.

    Stupid. Plain stupid.

What I am talking about is that all these class and level based mmos are all the same. It is as if the developers just take the cookie cutter way of doing things. No real re-invention of the genre. No attempt to make something new.
