Vista problems?

Hello,

I just installed the High-Res content client without any errors, but when I use the launcher to start the game I get as far as, "Opening Main Form", and then nothing.

I've looked over the launcher log and can't find anything suspicious. Has anyone had Vista related problems similar to this? I messed with the trial some time ago when I was an XP user, and I'd really like to give DDO another shot.

Thanks for your time.

I run the game on Vista x64 and have zero problems.

With Vista it could be a number of things. Do you have UAC turned on?

Are you using your old game CD/DVD to install or did you download the latest module?

Looking on the forums just doing a quick search it seems people fixed the issue by uninstalling the game and reinstalling it and it then worked for them. A pain I know.

But you're not the only one with the problem, just go to main forums and do a quick search for Opening Main Form and there is a few posts that might help you.

    Goodluck!

I find it hilarious that a good number of Windows games work better on linux than on VISTA.

No offense intended to you Windows folks.  I just had to post my humor.

(yes, I run DDO on my linux box =) )

Well with XP all you had to do was insert the disk and click play... I think that beats Vista or Linux.

What setup did you have to go through to make it work under Linux?   (I'm actually seriously interested... I've got SL5.2 running in VMware server on my Vista machine as I type).

Probably used the instructions at this website, http://www.lotrolinux.com/

As for the comment about Linux games running windows games better than Vista. My Vista has ran XP games that I've tried on it. Baulders Gate II took some tweaking to run, but it ran.

My opinion is a lot of the problems with games running on Vista is probably that damn UAC in Vista. I hate it and when I install Vista it is the first thing that is turned off. Another is running the program as administrator works.

But DDO worked right out of the box, installed, patched, and played with no problems in Vista x64. Even AC trial ran just fine.

I see that LOTRO Linux, I don't know about DDO, you can't patch with high-res textures installed, bummer. I think the game looks 100x better with high-res textures.

Yes, the install procedure for XP is easier than in linux.  I'm not trying to start an OS flame war, here, I'm just saying that it's funny to me that Linux can run Windows games easier than Windows can (albeit a brand new version).

I've set up instructions for what I, personally, suggest to do to get DDO up and running on a linux system on the WineHQ AppDB, but I go with a medium-hard way.  There are easier ways, especially now that the latest wine has started using different registry keys by default (which means less need to edit the registry), but I like my way.  It's more linuxy and, quite honestly, usually has better results than the easier ways.

Also, in reply to the message above stating that high-res graphics can't be used: I'm not entirely sure about that, these days.  The LotROLinux program now allows you to set it so that it uses high res graphics, although I'm still not sure if it actually does use them.  I haven't bothered to check in a long time, as the computer I'm on doesn't have the best of graphics cards, anyway.

Interesting thanks.   I'm not sure I'd call all of that easier than getting it to run under Vista but it is still something I'd like to try out.   Linux has really come a long way in order to even be able to run these programs at all.

Are the graphical glitch "boxes" in the screenshots an artifact of the screenshot process or are they in-game graphical problems with the Linux/Wine configuration?

Well, like I said, I typically go with a more difficult way of doing things, and my howto reflects that.  On top of that, I tried to make my howto very noob-friendlyl, so it explains a lot that the average linux user could figure out on his or her own.  I just installed it on a friend's computer, and the whole process took me about five minutes - I started copying the game to the hard drive, then while that happened, I set up LotROLinux.  By the time the game was done installing, I had LotROLinux compiled and installed, as well as the registry settings set how I suggest them to be in the howto.

Yes, the graphical glitches are from the screenshot process.  I was using GIMP, at the time, because I didn't know which key binding was used for screenshots.  I have since moved on to using the in-game screenshot thing, which works much better.

As people have noted in the main page for DDO at the AppDB, there are some issues with specular lighting (the graphics will randomly flip upside down once every ... oh, 20 seconds or so), but other than that, I haven't had any problems since Module 7.  In fact, on the computer I'm using, I can use much more advanced graphics options (other than specular lighting) in linux than in Windows, because it runs faster in linux.
