A Raiders Dilema.. Life after Wow?

I was always a fan of console based RPG's. I had never played a MMORPG until 2 yrs ago.

I was moving to Asia, and a few of my friends said, "Hey why not play WoW while you are there? It will be fun and a good way to keep in touch."

Well needless to say, I was hooked. The story and feel like you were actually impacting the world left a little to be desired, but being my 1st MMORPG I was amazed at the community and the world itself.

But now, 2 years, 3 lvl 70's, 2 epic flyers and a dead Illidan later, I think it may be time to move on.

There really isn't much left for me in WoW, just relationships with friends both RL and ingame but those can be maintained without WoW.

I guess I am asking on what game(s) you think would appeal to someone who at one time truly loved WoW.

I love the end game mechanics of wow. Really well scripted battles, innovative, interesting and requiring 25 people to really be on point and work cohesively as a unit. I even enjoyed the math behind figuring out DPS and what gear, gems and chants would give me .03% more of X-stat.

I have been doing some research, and I tend to be leaning towards LotRO. A story line that I have loved since I was old enough to read, and from my research it seems like it was brought to life rather well.

I have however heard that while many people have switched to LotRO from WoW and loved it, most who were serious end game raiders in WoW seem to hate it.  They say everything is a "Tank -n- Spank" the encounters are a bit sloppy and it dosent take much skill or teamwork to get through them.

Now if those are really the only drawbacks to a terrific game I am sure I can live with that, but I have other questions. I have also read that population isn't all that great in LotRO, but most of those articles were a few months old. Is it better?

So yes just a matter of opinion, but what game(s) would you recommend someone who loved raiding in WoW, but also would love to find a game where you can both get emersed in a story and feel as if you are part of it?

Thx in advance for ur comments. =)

EQ2 is really raid heavy with a decent storyline and scripted quests.

You might give it a try, it does have a free trial, so its not like you will be out anything.

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

Too bad WoW was your first MMO. Too many people get spoiled by it. Compared to its forefather's its nothing too special. ESPECIALLY the raiding aspect. Though if you're looking for raiding now... Vanguard seems to be buffing up their raiding content, and there's always EverQuest, though that's dated.

Vanguard is the best PvE based MMO on the market as of now, check it out. (warning, its not as simple and easy as WoW, but barely)

LOTRO is a great MMO , but in many way its similar to WOW. And the raids in LOTRO are nothing compared to WOW raids.

Actually its often said that WOW raids are like nothing any MMO can ever top...

So perhaps just wait for WOTLK expansion ?

I am a big fan of LotrO and have raided alot in it... Raiding in LotrO is very casual friendly, what you are describing of WoW-raids is not close to what LotrO raids are like... they arent as heavy scripted but they arent just Tank and Spank.. both the Balrog (Not the one in the books/movis) and the dragon Thorog are pretty challenging and fun fights but not compared to WoW..

Try the LotrO trial and play it for what it is... not like you played WoW... if you play it with the right mind I think you will enjoy it alot... but dont expect to find a hardcore raiding elite with über loot in there because the game an the "end-game" isnt designed like that..

maybe you will love it maybe you will hate it.. try and see for yourself :) (14-day trial)

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

    Thx for the advice guys..

1stly i can just about guarantee my buying WotLK, but that leaves 6 months or so of what? running around shatt showing off my T6 and doing dailies? lol

Maybe I put a bit too much emphasis on raids. Though I absoloutly love them and the teamwork involved in them I'm very willing to sacrifice endgame content for a game that is truly rewarding throughout.. One of my problems with WoW currently is that the game dosent really begin until 70. Go out and kill me 20 pigs for me stew etc. it has nothing to do w/ advancing you as a character or a story line for that matter, but im hungry, lazy and you need 47000xp till ur nxt lvl anyway.

Community and an immersing world are just as important.. you can have the best endgame dungeons around, but if the journey there was boring and the 20 guys you gotta do w/ are all 13yr old brats and you have no choice but to play with them because no one else plays well then what good are they.

So yeah, endgame is something i loved in wow, but it isnt the be all and end all in my choosing a new game.

Thx again guys.. I'll go start doing some research on Vanguard as well.. I have heard bad things but that was almost exclusivly on WoW forums, and well we tend to have our high horse we like to ride on. =)

EverQuest (original) still is and always has been the King of static content, and the Emperor of raiding.

I want the opposite of what you want.

But if you really want to just raid and raid long hours and spend most of you time doing that, play EverQuest1.

WoW raiding is for rookies compared. EQ has huge timesinks and a big AA model.

You like maths and figuring out how the gameplay works? Here you go: http://www.thesteelwarrior.org/forum/showthread.php?t=16017

I stopped raiding though because I consider it a timesink, but EQ is just that, raid raid raid till you drop, go nuts but don't say I didn't warn you.

Wow is a great game, but IMO they are about a year too late on their expansions.  But they milk a large portion of they playerbase by selling raid content, Arena seasons, and rep grings (SSO) instead of putting out an expansion each year.

This has really soured my opinion of the game because I feel like I'm being manipulated out of a monthly payment.

    Meh.

I posted in your LOTRO question thread.  It's a great game, but put aside your WoW "brainwashing" before playing it.

Wow is just about 2x better than eq2 and 3x better than lotro. Lotro and eq2 are just poor, low quality games honestly. I've played all three, and wow is the only one worth your time.

Alot of people here just hate wow to hate it, or because they think it's cool. Fact is, they're dumb and wow is just a great game.

I couldnt stand LOTRO after playing WoW, I thought it might be fun but bleh, it was a huge waste of time and money for me :P Maybe the OP will have more fun than I did :/

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

AoC's raiding is very similar to WoW. Not as refined/cool (yet), but getting there. Has Tier 1, 2 and 3 instances already, though some are still buggy and lacking polish/completeness.

I hear DDO has some of the best Raid designs in all the MMOs.

I've been playing LOTRO since around release and its amazing. Though it lacks raids, but an expansion is being released in the fall that will add raids and such.

In Everquest, you have a number of options:

    (1)  Group

Everquest remains today the best group-game, and I think it probably always will hold that title.  It is increasingly focusing on group and community with a wide variety of zones, Quests, missions, dungeons, named-mobs and so-forth to progression in the game.

Alternative Advancement enables you to develop and progress with a character, in a deep and somewhat sophisticated way, without having to "level-up."  I am going to get level 71 and stay there forever, I think.

    (2)  Raid

Goodness gracious. Everquest is by far the best raid game.  In fact, I somewhat dislike Everquest for this reason, believe it or not.

As i write this, I am in arcstone raiding with a few guildmates and friends.  Great fun.

If you enjoy --no, if you love to raid-- you will never go bored in Everquest.  And you will always be needed, the more the merrier is the attitude.

Thx for all the input all..

I am currently downloading the free trial of LotRO and we'll see.

Vanguard also sounds interesting, though so much bashing on the WoW forums makes me wary. =)

From what i can see, the gameplay and story in LotRO is what I am looking for and sounds as if I may enjoy it, If not, well no money lost just 3 days of download time heh.

If the people here are indicative of what the community of LotRO is like I'm sure I will enjoy it.. thx again
