Sad times for MMORPG's?

There's really nothing coming out anytime soon that looks like anything special. The only game that could possibly be entertaining for a few months is Warhammer...

I guess it's back to WoW with Lich King this year.

End of 2008 and the 2009 year should be good.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Sad time for an MMORPG happens if you stare at your character doing nothing or you have an urge to kill a monster but whatever you do you cant kill it or getting frustrated if you got owned  in-game.

Does anyone think Warhammer will not make the same mistakes that AOC did.

Sadly I think War is going the same way AOC did.  Dont forget that AOC cut 2 classes out of the game to about 5 months before release.  I see the same thing happen here.  Its just now that Mythic sees they are overworked and they are yet to start all the real troublefixing - not to mention if some bigger issues come up.

These games are taking way to short time into polishing and balancing.  Main reason is that the devs dont start up with clear cut system they are working after.  Or they change it like Mythic has done now - just few months before release.

About the 4 classes cut out.  Main reason was because of real poor animation work I guess.  They don't have time to go through it again so its better to just throw it out.  More will be thrown out soon I guess.

What ever happened to playing an MMO for years, exclusively? Now people hop around looking for the next thrill. Only reason I'm part of that crowd is cause the MMO I had stuck with for about 4 years is finally dying. DAoC, I knew ye well.

Also, I trust the Warhammer developers, Mythic isn't as stupid as Funcom.

And there's Darkfall to look forward to too, hopefully.

I think this genre is a one-shot deal. You play your first MMO and, hopefully if it's good, you're really into it. You wanna rush home from work to play it and see your character grow and change. But then something happens, either it just becomes so routine that you're bored. Or maybe you want a scenery change, something in another game that you like, or the same is simply dying. So you look for another MMO, but then you realize...

They're all almost identical! They do things to make their game different and that's the only reason you'll play it. But the fascination of a new genre, a new gaming style, is gone after that first MMO. You find yourself getting bored quicker. So these new games coming out have to really offer something fun to get customers, especially veterans...and I think WAR and Aion and some of these others are doing just that.

I have been folloving MMORPG's for over 6-7 years now, and can clearly say that this is the lowest and saddest point this genre has ever hit.

Just look at Released games vs Games in Development list on this site.

Games in development shrinks and shrinks. And even some games on the list are hoax and will never get released. Others probably not before Q3 2010.

AOC turned to be major disapointment. WAR seems to be heading heads down into the pit. Aion may look good , but its just another korean grinder.Champions online another XBOX MMO...

And WOW wotlk seems to be the wining stake , again this year

and thats about it for AAA MMO line up.

Maybe thats good. Its perhaps time to move on.

MMOs will shine again. But it will not be in this decade...

  • To me, it's because the core of the genre has changed.  I used to be impressed with MMOs because they were complex and all-encompasing (and not all-encompassing as in you must raid for five hours a day!).  For example, they were heavily macro-based and I knew all kinds of system admins who always had their MMOs running in the background to trade, or harvest some mats, or do some long term crafting, etc.  Now, MMOs are all about you being there at every single moment and making you be there for any loot you would ever want to equip your character with (bop).  There's no more macros, trade is nothing more then commodity markets, and crafting is rarely anything more then an afterthought.  MMOs have truly in my opinion become too convenient and hands on.  It's tough to explain, but I see fundamental changes that make these games way different then they were years ago.  So it's not that I'm simply bored of the genre or that no MMO can ever help me relive the feeling of my first MMO.  The game structure has just changed to some kind of forced arcade style.

Congrats if you have a clue of what I"m trying to say here, because I"m not so sure I understand it myself.  :)

Completely understanding what you are trying to say.

    MMORPGs - transformed from:

    Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games

    to

    Instanced/Limited online cooperative/competitive games

Companies figured that mainstream , arcade like simplicity , not only sells better to the masses - but is also much easier to make - instead of virtual simulated complex game worlds

I can see why people would be upset with what is out there with MMORPG market today.  I may be in the minority but I am enjoying AoC/WoW at the moment.

If I have an itch to play old school I can always go back to L2/UO.

But I have to agree that progress foward in the MMORPG market is stagnating and there isn't a lot of hope in the near future left.

Is there anything at all way down on the horizon that could potentially compete with WoW on any serious level?

Blizzards new MMO they are working on, but that's a good way off.

WAR, They have some very good people working for them

Guild Wars 2, could be huge.

Aion but I doubt it, it seems to focus on Asia too much.

    Honest answer?

    No.

I held off playing WoW for three years and finally gave in a few months ago. Here are my initial impressions of the game.

The game is polished top to bottom.  There are MMORPG's older than WoW that are not polished top to bottom from level 1 to max level so that says it all.

The combat is kinetic with the right balance in that it is not too fast but not too slow either.

What makes the game "go" IMVHO is that it while does retain some old school MMORPG elements with end game raiding in reality it also blends in the new wave (instancing).  It appeases both crowds even though it is a constant juggling act for Blizz.

The ability to see many players online in a gathering area in the major cities is what defines an MMORPG to me and brought back old feelings I had playing EQ when I walked into Orgrimmar.  So while at times it can feel like a single player game due to instancing at least there are moments you feel you are part of a world with many players online.

WoW = Good balance of old school elements + new school elements.  That is what it is in a nutshell.

Sony and EverQuest at one time back were the industry leader. Currently it is Blizzard and WoW for the near future i see nothing to change this.

Whoa, wait, what? Was there an announcement I missed? Are there really making one, or is this just speculation over since WoW is so successful that they must be making one?

    Speculation/reality all rolled into one.

I think this quote is much of the essence of the sadness in parts of the MMOG community, and maybe in particular on the mmorpg.com forums, seemingly being host mainly to jaded and opinionated veterans. ;-) Everybody hope for some coming title to be what they're looking for, not able to find enough enjoyment in any current title. Everybody hope for someone to make the perfect MMOG which technology, developer and PR experience, and available funds simply doesn't support.

Honestly, I think people (including myself, btw) just need to admit that the dream title isn't going to come to revolutionize the genre and bring in numbers coming even close to WoW. Suck it up. Play something you enjoy at least a little bit, or find another genre to sink time into. And if some title proves you (me) wrong, we can all dance around inside ourselves in exstacy then - no need to torment ourselves in the meantime.

They are really making one. If you followed the Job listings on the Blizzard site, a few were "for our next MMO world".

The VP of Blizzard,  Itzik Ben Bassat, also said:

"When we announce our next MMORPG it's not going to be another WoW - we're not a company that tends to tread the same ground. It'll be something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level."

    in an interview.

I think if any developer can make something that can compete with WoW, it would be Bioware.  I put these guys in a much higher spot in terms of quality games compared to blizzard, and since they are new in the MMO business (like blizz was with WoW), they will most likely bring something fresh to the table.  Hopefully something is seen at E3 with them, as there is rumor that they have a big announcement pertaining to a secret game they are developing.

These days to be bored of WoW is to be bored of mmos :(

In the last week I have tried EQ2 & AO again and in comparison to WoW the gameplay is really lacking but I just dont want to play WoW. I'd do an AoC free trial but funcom are busy grabbing every penny they can.

    2003 was the best

    EVE

    SWG

    PS

    Then 2004 came

    2 of them got ruined

    later on in 2004

    WOW

    EQ2

shame both of them have been ruined

all thats left is EVE which I enjoy but it doesn't feel like home like SWG did or PS did.
