Seeing increased numbers of people leaving AC2

At least as far as my allegiance is concerned, we are falling apart. The monarch has already announced he is leaving for WoW and on our message boards, I noticed members are leaving the game in droves. The allegiance is probably half the size it was a month ago. When WoW stress test was running, the 2 main servers were lucky to get 550 people playing (I personally don't like WoW that much. It is too much of an EQ clone and got bored with it about as fast as EQ). And after seeing how my allegiance is falling apart, I have doubts that I will come back.

*yawn* The people left playing AC2 are pretty much the hardcore players anyway and no I don't play AC2. I doubt WoW or any other MMORPG will significantly impact the already low population numbers. You realize you are just perpetuating the same old thread that comes up pretty much anytime a new MMO comes out X game coming out will kill Y game that already exists.

As I recall from playing AC1, Diablo II was supposed to kill AC1, then AO, then DAoC, etc. When in reality no single game hurts one game too badly, granted collectively they do whittle away at the numbers. However, you never read posts that say, "I guess a few people are leaving for that new X game." It’s always, "OMG X GAME IS GOING TO OWN Y GAME AND Y GAME IS GOING TO DIE." Though you do not say anything like this in your post, I feel it's implied in the fact that you realize your post alone may cause people to not want to play. Perhaps, your allegiance is special but I would not generalize it to be the whole AC2 community.

Actually, I would have to agree with Alekhin on this. Normally I would back up the notion that new games don't hurt existing games too much, but this is not the case with WoW and AC2. Half of my allegiance was in the WoW stress test, and those that weren't were in /allegiance talking about WoW.

Some people would come back to AC2 after the stress test, and in /general chat, broadcast everything about the game, with about everyone else asking them questions about WoW.

WoW is going to (unfortunately) do more than just whittle away a few players.

Why am I not buying into the hype of WoW. I guess I can't comment too much since I didn't play the beta. But I think it reminds me of CoH most recently. Yes, obviously a lot more people are going to be playing the FREE OPEN beta. Then some of those might even play WoW when it comes time to pay. In the end though, I'm betting you'll probably see a fair amount of people coming back from WoW saying it's not that great, as it always happens.

Once again, maybe I'm wrong or maybe I've just seen this same topic too many times. Maybe WoW will be the best thing ever and severly hurt AC2 in particular, in which case I doubt AC2 would be a special case. So, WoW will presumably hurt most other MMO's, but for some reason I can't bring myself to see that. I can't picture any game so great.

Right there you should have stopped. You say and admit you do not play AC2. Even if your reason for not playing AC2 is different from the reason others have for leaving/not playing AC2, the fact remains you are doing the same as them - not playing AC2. In the end, you are on the same side as everyone leaving AC2 for WoW, EQ2, GW, AC1, DAoC, DnL, or any other game.

This thread was not, is not, about other games vs AC1. It is specifically about other games vs AC2.

    Dear xplororor,

I played AC2 and quit because I grew tired of it, not to play any other game. I currently play no MMO and have not played any after AC2. Also I don't get how you think I was trying to compare AC1 to other games. I was simply using AC1 as an example of when new games coming out were supposed to kill old ones. Yet nothing of the sort happens in reality.

Great thread, Guys. Civilized differences of opinions, & NO 'grief' posts.... at least, not yet. image

I set up a trial account for AC2 a while back, but with this nasty hurricane season upon us, I never really got to get a feel for it. I'm subscribed to, & love, AO; & yes, I'm accepted into the WoW beta. But the craft system & char creation in AC2 have intrigued me, so I'm going to go ahead & give it another good try in just a little bit. As long as the level grind doesn't get too boring, too soon, I'm quite interested in spending some time in AC2's Kingdom.

Even though the numbers are currently dropping ingame, it could also be a sign of the usual player turnover. Everybody's running to what they all hope is the 'next big thing'. (Remember the CoH hype around here??? image ) So hopefully, you'll get more newcomers like me, who truly want to give AC2 a fair chance, before criticizing it. And, more than likely, you'll see the return of some of the older/longtime players, too. It happens in AO, & all the other good titles, all the time. For 1 reason or another, good loyal players just feel the need to take a break & try something else. But more often than not, they return with a renewed passion for the game they originally loved so much.

If any of you have or are currently playing any sci-fi titles as well, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions of the similarities/differences between the playing styles. Yes, I know, they ALL have the usual generic stuff, & yes, I know the main difference is some are sci-fi & some are fantasy themed. image So please give us your 1st hand critiques ~ as hardcore players of both genres.

    Thanks ~ spiritwolf

The problem that I am beginning to see with AC2 is one that existed several months ago. This game is one where players basically must work together and form groups. As populations dwindle (and they did forcing Turbine to cut down to 4 servers) it becomes more and more difficult to find a group to do that quest you need or to hunt with. The end result is that more people leave because there are not enough people playing.

The allegiance that I am presently in is a hybrid of three previous allegiances which had several players leave for WOW beta.  They loved it so much that many have cancelled their AC2 accounts and have made plans to play Wow instead.  Again, this does not account for the entire problem of dwindling server populations, but it does produce a snowball effect.

On the plus side I have seen more and more new comers to AC2 from the 15 day trial. The net effect is that the players leaving are being replaced, to an extent, with newer subscriptions. If Turbine can keep server populations up, the game will continue to be entertaining.
