yo, i am looking to buy a new video card since my x800 is dated. Obviously i have been looking at the 4870 and i was gonna jump the gun on it, assuming it was going to be 250 but its 300. Anyway the 3870 when it first came out was 250$ so the question is, about how long did it take for the 3870 to drop in price to give me a idea for the 4870?
just hold out or be OMG FINNALY NEW CARD. thx for answering.

Its priced dropped within a month due to the 8800 GT to around $200, then when the 9600 cards were released it dropped into the sub-$200 range. Then finally it reduced its price again just rescently. I would say this won't be true with the HD4870's because of how well they perform against the competition. When the 3870 was released it was better then all the nVidia offerings but the 8800 Ultra and the low stocked 8800GT. Its price was reduced due to competition. The same doesn't apply in this case.
thx , then il prob just get it now then, then it comes down to brand, i remember the price drop due to price wars but was just making sure i had all my info.
Prob gonna sport for the HIS one. Thx for the info. to bad none of them are offering a free game with them
Edit- Ok i went with saphire instead, on a side note to spur some conversation.
Whats the view on the toxic thing they do, iv seen very good cooling with it keeping it a single slot, just curiouse why other companies have adopted this or they havnt made more of it making larger version possible for more extensive cooling.
Yeah I would go with Sapphire also. thats what my x800 its been pretty much OC all the time since Ive had it and its still running like a champ........ Im building a new comptuer also here soon so I can finally make the jump to PCI -e .
I wouldn't buy into using a single slot air cooler on a 4870. Its just not gonna work. The reason being heat. The 3870 was a milestone because of how well it dealt with heat and power. If you look at benches, the 3870 always comes in incredibly low so using a single slot cooler is plausible. However, the 4870 draws alot more power and is one of the hottest video cards right now. There should be some addressing to this as a bit of it is from the drivers not working properly.
Also in a couple weeks they are coming out with an extreme edition 4870 with higher clocks and it comes with a liquid cooler.
When it comes to brands on ATI cards. I seem to like MSI and Diamond the best. Although I guess Sapphire makes some descent ones too.
no no no you misunderstand, sapphire makes a mix cooler to say its a single slot air cooler with liqued cooling.
As for paying for higher clocks i cant take care of overclocking myself, il just borrow the numbers since i know they will be stable.
Yes im aware there are no full drivers out yet (there are beta) but honestly im not too all concerned.
Also can ya show a source of this x edition card.
The clock is locked at 790mhz on the normal edition. Diamond is coming out with a Black Edition XOC that has this unlocked, and there is already a water cooling block available.
im sure its just locked with there drivers(which could be unlocked when it comes time for there actuale release drivers), much like how my x700 cant, but i still made it overclock for some extra oomph just use riva tuner or ATI tray tools.
