SWG has been through a lot of changes in five years ... some good, most not so good. However, it IS improving with every update.
So, if you are curious about SWG, please take my advice, ignore both "hater" and "fanboi" alike, download the trial and see for yourself.

The trial can be downloaded from http://www.tryswg.com and make sure you play long enough to make it off the newbie station. The newbie station is *not* representative of the game as a whole.

My suggestion is that people download the client from Fileplanets site. Because ive had issues downloading the client from their site when i did actually want to retry my vet account

Someone will usually bash every game on this site, best thing to do is look for a trial like everyone above me has said and try it yourself.

My advice is to listen to those you feel inclined to listen to, and don't listen to those whom you don't. Try it if you'd like to, but there are some honest voices here and some dishonest ones. As an individual with the capacity to reason and discern, it is up to you in your liberty to choose wisely.
There are many propagandists on both sides. Just remember one side has SONY's substantial resources behind them, the other side is just made up of individuals who for one reason or another, either do not like the game or the companies that produced it.

Yeah people won't experience how bad the game is until they get down to Tatooine.
The truth is, if you are wanting a new mmo and are coming from one like, WOW, LOTR, EQ2 or any of the other one's that are made in the same mold, it won't take you very long to see that not only does all those other games are much better with the hampster on the wheel lvl/class systems, they also have many more people playing.
You will also see that those other game devs don't change the combat system every other month, and make you have to relearn everything over and over.
So if you are interested in playing SWG remember this, SWG does everything that those other mmo's do, just 10 times worse. Long gone are the days when the game was innovative, cutting edge and actually stood head and shoulders above the rest.
10/10 on what you just said, its all personal prefference though, i have to play a level/class game although i preffer they mix it up at some point with duel classing or something.
Sad to see so many bitter people concerning this game, if kobie is who i think he is he's a good dude. If you wanna try a Sci-fi MMO try the free trial, it's free and you might find some enjoyment. To the guy that posted not to trust etc etc, if you had paid attention to the overall tone of his post you wouldn't have made your statement, he's not posting as a fan just a dude saying try it instead of listening to the bitter guys.

The fact is, if a game has so many 'bitter' (your word, not mine) guys posting about it, chances are the game stinks. If a game was good and getting better all the time, there wouldn't be so many 'bitter' guys posting about how bad it is.

Many people lose site of the obvious that the simple answer is usually the correct one. If so many say that the game stinks then there is most likely some truth there.
If the game is so good then there would be no population issues with the servers and no calls for free server transfers or bring back pre-CU posts. There would be no need to ONLY market to former players to get them to come back with free trials giving away weeks of free playtime.
This is a mess SOE and LA made. They have the power to correct it and make ALL parties happy and at the same time increase their subs but they chose not to.

My view is some people will like the game. Others will not. By all means read all opinions. An informed consumer is a good consumer.
If you want to try the game, use the free trial. That way, if you do not like the game, no harm done and you are not out of pocket.
Guild Plug here --- one thing most people (I think ) do agree on is that SWG vets and current are a fairly decent community to be around. Be careful the server you choose as low population is a very valid and legitimate issue...
That being said I encourage anyone trying a new toon to come to Kette-- mainly because several people have started fresh there, so we are all in the same boat. Even though Kett is not a large population, having a decent sized guild with people all leveling brings back some of the community aspects that are sorely missed (IMHO).
If interested --- (old or new) roll a toon on kette and email farcus, hosal, imtheboss or dratbacca. One of these people is bound to help you out.
BTW Fisher, where do I fall in your assessment?
Just noticed my ancient account is open again... Kind of interested in seeing how things are. Can anyone give me any tips on what server to start on, or any noob friendly guilds recruiting?

We are on Kett--- small server pop but decent guild size-- all leveling up right now. My toon is lvl 58
We are imperial (Kettemoorians requested that to balance PVP) and have over 80 members on the guild.. TBH though I would say 30 ish playing at most hours.
We are very friendly and lots of us have never leveled a toon in the post CU world, so we are all in the same boat.

Email some of these guys or look for the NOVUS tag--- I am sure someone would love to hook you up!
You can try the Free Trial but most of the time people can't download it because SOE can't get even that right. Try it for free, DO NOT pay for this game until you have done so. It won't take you long to realize what 99% of other people who try this game realize...
I don't have to tell you that this is one of the worst MMO games on the market, you'll see that all by yourselves.

Personally, I would love to see the Pre-CU back via classic server or through an "alternate" source. I just think the odds are better of the feasibility of a classic server.
Here is what I kind of think would be half full prediction... Alternate galaxies is a huge success. Soe realizes this and hires that crew to host a classic server. People who cared about pre-cu are then the developers and many players get a return to the game they first bought. New Bioware MMO comes out and it is amazing! People love the innovations in this new MMORPG and the new gold standard is set--- putting pressure on other games to develop further innovations to keep up.
Here is the half empty prediction. Alternate does really well. Lucas et al. see they are not making money. Lawsuits fly. SOE continues to be pig-headed and never creates a classic server. New Bioware MMO is a WOW clone.

Last I checked, this was the SWG "General Discussion" forum, not the SWG "Whiny Former Players" forum. You guys always tell me not to post in "your" forum, yet here you all are, trolling this thread here.

More importantly, this is the SWG forum for discussion about the current game, not the former version. As such, you should expect to find a number of posts claiming the current game is complete crap, not because of "Whiny Former Players", but because the current game is indeed complete crap. It is still the worst MMO on the market.
could someone explain to me what pre cu is? i couldnt game any when this came out and always regret missing out on it because i heard it was great at one time. something about NGE destroyed it or something. i dont need the whole history or anything just an explanation as to what pre cu means
