this is COH 2!!

I have watched every second of video to-date about this game, and I have read every article.  I can officially say that I know most of what is available about this game, and my prognosis is that it is JUST like COH, but newer.

Reasons:

1.  COH and CO have the same designer, but more importantly, they are approaching the game from the same perspective.  Almost as if they want to call it COH 2 but can't due to copyright reasons.

2.  The actions, baddies, and general action LOOKS just like COH with some upgrades.  Coh has always felt like a game someone could play with a controller ect.  The powers... and many of what Jack said would be at launch was promised to COH customers back when the game was in beta i.e customizable powers.

3.  I had an e-mail conversation with Jack himself (he is actually very easy to reach) and asked him some superficail questions about how the game will update, and he said it would be simaler to COH with releases of free content updates regularly.  While this is not anything unique to COH, it is strange how he directly linked them together.

Jack has linked CoH and CO together so many times, it ain't funny. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Like Jack said himself, CO is like CoH, but better. It'll allow players to do what CoH is (currently) and was lacking. Cryptic's first MMO was CoH, and after NCSoft bought the IP, Cryptic now has the chance to develop this new MMO after experience.

I feel CO will be similar to CoH, but different in many ways. CO will be faster paced (as shown and as by detail - no delay in attacks, you can use them as soon as the activation of the previous one finishes), better to do with what PLAYERS want, and even more considerable story lines (not the same old pace and feel you get from level 1 missions in CoH, to level 50 missions).

Anyway ~ best to wait and see. I'm getting sick on City of Heroes since I've made pretty muc hevery character combination I wanted.. CO will bring something new to the Superhero MMO field.. and about time!

By the looks of the game its just coh, with a new art style and a few tweaks here and there.  jesus christ there are no even bloody villians to play.  No pvp, no villians, more grind 50 hood bums on the streets etc etc etc.

Just because Champions Online fits the same genre as CoH (superheroes), it doesn't mean it's a complete copy.

Sure, the development team are the same on both games, but I feel as if Champions Online is the game Jack wanted City of Heroes to be.

Whether that's a good or bad thing is still a blur, only time will tell!

On that note; it's like calling World of Warcraft and Guild Wars the same game because their genre is similar. Get. Over. It.

Actually, I think you'll find COH anhd Champions to be far more similar in design and playstyle than WOW is to GW or any of its so called clones.

It will be far more than just genre similarities.

When it comes to game development, the game apple never seems to fall too far from the developers tree.

Not sure why this is, but my guess is that it comes down to institutional memory and culture, not intent.  That is, I don't think Jack is setting out to remake CoX, but it will happen anyway.

If you think of game development as answering a set of fundamental questions, moreover, a set of questions that does not change no matter what type game is being developed, then it's not surprising that same group of people will always come up with the same answers.

Coh developed by Cryptic--CO developed by Cryptic and yet somehow they are similar..hmm

I can't figure it out, but apparently you have broken the code.

I would in no way mind CoH 2.

If they can pull off everything they promised for CoH during it's development phase, plus more, and more diversity of missions at launch, I'm all for it.

Thank you! This is exactly what I was trying to point out.

As I long time CoH player I can tell you that this seems NOTHING like CoH. I don't even know how you are comparing them the way you are OP. You said  they look alike. No, they have 2 COMPLETELY different art styles. CO is cell shaded. CO also uses the HERO system. CoH does not. CO will allow your character to have acess to EVERY power. CoH does not. CO has power customization and far greater character customization. CO has the nemesis system and you may be able to play as your nemesis. CO has completely different envoirnments. I'm not seeing how this could be CoH 2 in the slightest, but rather a new superhero MMO.

    Quick correction......

CO is "supposed" to have all that.

Just like WAR was "supposed" to have four more classes and two more cities.

Not to mention this is not even the game they started making. They were actually working on Marvel Ultimate Online. CO is thier attempt to salvage the work they did before Microsoft pulled the plug.

And WAR has already been through a year or more of delays.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

BECAUSE... at retail release (and especially judging by the way COH is making all the changes jack kept putting off, BUT jack is touting those items as "stuff" for CO...) you'll see everyone going "yeah, it's COH2, too bad it doesn't have XYZ that COx has..."

or maybe, cuz when this was MUO (marvel universe online), everyone saw that as COH2 with marvel copyrights?

i haven't seen where the HERO system being implemented ingame is going to allow me to have however many minions, riches, vehicles, bases, etc that my points can purchase.  the only thing i'm seeing (which is an improvement based upon lessons learned) which is a change is power customization (colours).  and this isn't happening in COx because they messed that up initially and can't/won't fix it.

honestly, from what jackie and co have released thus far, it's an extreme leap of faith to NOT draw a direct comparison between the two games and come up with "hey, this is all the stuff they spoke about if they'd ever make a COx2".  or maybe it's just a denial of facts?

seriously, the art style is a reason it's not COH2?  seriously?

so that means that diablo and diablo2, or eq and eq2 have exactly the same everything when it comes to the art ingame?

don't know why you'd hate about something like this.  really don't.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Why don't they just make COH/V better rather that make a new game that is the same.

IMO, once Emmert left, they did. Emmert promised all that stuff for CoX, never did it. I have no faith he will this time either. These devs always promise the moon, then pull them before release (at least Mythic told us up front, not like Funcom), because they "weren't polished enough, but its coming in an update, promise". In other words they have to release cause out of money.

Because they sold the IP to NCSoft, its up to them now to do that.

They are using the money from that, and from other things to develop a few games actually. And saying CO is just COX2 is a crock of crap. They sold COX so they wouldnt be stuck to using its system.

The style in CO isnt exactly Cell-shaded, but similar. They are designing it for PC and 360, and are working on making sure it fits. The customization in the game is going to be alot greater than you see in COX. And, for those of you bitching about no villians, actually read abot the game from more than one source. You'll be allowed to create your own villian for your character, his own nemesis.

Any similarity spotted between the two can be easily dismissed because

    A) Its from the same company and

    B) How many other Superhero MMOs are out right now to compare it too?

edit: I also think that CO will rely less on instancing, not sure though.

Now Ubisoft fully control the COX IP, and their statement at the time that they have big plans for moving COX forward. It will be interesting just how far Ubisoft will invest in updating COX to compete with CO, and SOE's DC MMO. Those two can draw an awful lot of their customer base away. If they don't have something big out to update COX in 2009 it's game over for Ubisoft to have the customer base in place to justify further investment to expand and grow the game. It's not like Ubisoft don't have a chance to compete, unlike SWG, which doesn't have a chance in hell holding on to what customers it has left when Biowars release their up and coming The old Republic Star Wars MMO.

Is there a reason why this game is not called CoH2?

  • jeffg316jeffg316 Member Posts: 48

Isn't it NCSoft and not Ubisoft?

Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, Eve Online, DCUO, Rift

    Playing: SW:TOR

The gameplay is closer to Diablo than to CoX.

Diablo as a MMO, but Diablo nonetheless.  CoX gameplay is quite similar to WoW and EQ.

Go see a trailer for yourself, plenty of them on You Tube.

Personnally, I can't wait for the next "City of" game/expansion.  I wish for medieval-fantasy, but I will play about just anything.

98% of the gamecode will be 100% identical.

It's a new iteration of an old software.
