I just wanted to clarify that hosting a free shard is not illegal, and that the sticky is completely erroneous on behalf of UO. The original EULA did not cover server emulation and, thus, the only protection the game has is the copyright. With a free shard, this isn't a problem.
I'll probably get banned for this but, that sticky is just garbage and whoever posted it doesn't know what they're talking about.

It is what it is. If you use these forums you agree to follow the rules. The rule of the land is no free servers. No matter if that is all a lot of old schoolers play anymore anyone who wants to find it could easily google search it.
You could always describe a shard's features and not name it and ask people if they want to know more to pm you.
No, you cannot. Discussion/promotion/links/etc. of private servers is against the rules here.
Describing a particular shard/private server is called discussion and also promotion, whether people have to PM you for the info or not.
Example: "Private servers: good or bad?" is a general discussion and will usually not be deleted.
However: "Hey, I know a private server that has such and such features, PM me for info." will be deleted and get you a ban.
True, then you are better off with throw away accounts and promoting a shard.
Free servers are just plain wrong on many, no matter what their legality is.
All direct references to them should be deleted immediately.
So far, this thread is merely debating their legality, so it may survive.
