Its not dead i just logged off all the servers are up to medium ussualy during the evening .. or on the weekends so no its not dead , the free keys are just a promotion type deal ..
After seeing all these posts for free keys I'm wondering if it's worth restarting, is the game now dead?
It's always worth it when it's free
And of course, it all depends on what you mean by dead, there are still big guilds raiding, people still group all the time (Having a shortage on tanks at the moment though, support grouping - roll a tank today!)
Just say the word and i'll give you a free key so you can look for yourself.
Noone playing at low levels so it's very hard to find a group.
Not true.
It's partly true though, due to the shortage of tanks getting a group outside of guild groups can be a bit tricky, people have been reporting waiting up to 3 hours to get a group.
The people are there, most of them are just playing as dps classes.
Finding a guild on the Roleplaying server helped me a ton with always having a group. I now group daily with a couple, a high elven templar and a dark elven wizard. It's much funner playing with others.

That doesn't really mean anything. If a game isn't doing well they will usually down grade the server. So medium capacity might actually be quite low amount of players. Not saying this is the case, just that server capacity doesn't mean that there are 5000 players in the game.
The game is pretty much dead. If it wasnt they wouldnt have given me a free account like last year sometime with 3 months free play on it, only to offer me a couple of more free months a short time later and the prospect of yet more free time should I recruit anyone to pay for the game. Healthy MMO's dont do all of that. Ill say the game is very fun now and its got a lot of good things going for it. Theres just nobody playing it. Most people just look at Antonia Bayle and think the game is doing fine on the merit of that one server when thats simply not the case. And the community on AB is garbage anyways.
Can't speak for the people of AB, but where i play (Runnyeye, european server) the community is pretty decent, in primetime it's not hard getting groups and most guilds are filled nice people who will help you at the mere mention of a problem you have.

I think what you are generally refering to is marketing "ding"

Which I have found soe to be extremely good at.
Haha yeah its a marketing ding alright. Considering Ive been a subrciber to a good dozen MMO's over the last 8 years or so and I havent encountered any marketing strategies anywhere near this drastic its hard to call it anything except desperation. And we all know how well SOE markets their games, since EQ2 is apparently their flagship MMO and it lies on life support with the rest of the mediocre sony lineup on all access pass.
Seriously, SOE exremely good at marketing? Hahaha oh yeah thats precious. How many times did they repackage SWG and ship it as "THE SUPER ULTIMATE COMPLETE ADVENTURES, WERE FUCKIN SERIOUS THIS TIME DAWG" only to have it fail miserably to stop the leakage. They bought out another strong IP in matrix online, which should be bringing in subs like a guitar player drops panties just on the name alone, and instead of improving it and marketing it as under new management they just pushed it to the side and let it rot. SOE couldnt market a free aids cure in africa.
And dont even get me started on how they handled publishing rights for PotBS. That game was hyped up to hell just mostly from word of mouth with very little in the way of real advertising and SOE gets that job handed to them and you have the most uneventful unrecorded major MMO launch in recent memory, did they even try? Yes the game sucked anyways, but so did AoC and they still manage to get plenty of good press. Funcom is a terrible company yet they are is 10x SOE's superior when it comes to hyping a game.
That is probably why some of the zones have so many people in them that the servers spawned a 2nd or even 3rd version of it because of over crowding last weekend.
From my experience the game is far from dead, i play on Unrest server and there's plenty of people on. i've found the community to be very good (with a few exceptions--no matter what game you play there's always those few morons in general chat...), and i usually don't have any trouble getting some help when i need it.
sure the population isn't WOW, you won't see 50-80 players huddled around the AH...well i guess you wouldn't in EQ2 even if they had the same sized populations since there's brokers all over the place instead of 1 area per city...
personally i think it's pretty good marketing on their part, invite players who left to try it out again (someone who has already shown interest in the game in the past), and then also give incentive for friends of current players to try it out also (who's most likely to give it a try--someone who has no connection to a game or someone who's got some friends who already play that game). sure they could do a big ad campaign, spend a ton of money and probably get some new subs--or, they could do what they've done and let players invite their friends to play with them and take the money that would've gone to advertising and use it to add new content like live events all through the summer, etc.
LOL to me a game is dead is when they shut down the servers now thats dead his game is just so big everyone is everywhere i'm sure if they up the older zones a bit faster xp,better loot, maybe a few surprise fights i loved when out of nowhere in Antonica and then i get taken to a cave i thought that was funny
