Atlantica Online - Initial Thoughts

So the just announced Atlantica Online has a few screenshots available, a gameplay trailer, and some concept art.

(English)http://www.playatlantica.com/

(Korean)http://atlantica.ndoors.com/center/

This is a Korean developed MMO that appears at a glance to be a significant change in the status quo. I think the turned based play and graphics will make this game stand out from the crowd of the average games. The korean website appears to be much more populated with information which does not show up on the english site, but that may be due to my lack of understanding the language. There is a beta sign-up available on the website though.

I'm just hoping this game adds enough variety and plot to keep the game from hitting the boredom factor of intensely repetitive play.

What do you think??

I think that its very bizzare that a game which was just announched is claiming to be released THIS MONTH (July 2008, posted right on the front of their website). Perhaps they did it to avoid the fanboy hype that gets so absurd with other MMOs. But maybe they just spent very little time in development.

Asian developed MMOs (Korean ones in perticular) are famous for massive amounts of grinding. Although the idea of a turn-based combat system in an MMO sounds amazing to me, I'm worried that if this turns out to be a grinding game then the grinding would only be made that much more painful by the slower than normal combat. (Imagine it, instead of killing 100 rats to get to level 2, you have to plan a massive three hour long battle aginst the rat king and his 3000 soldiers to get to level 2!)

And do we have any information on the payment scheme yet? Will it be subscription based or will it be "FREE" with some kind of sinister catch? Will players be able to purcahse in-game advantages over other players using RL money? This sort of setup has become all too common these days, even more so with quickly developed asian MMOs like this one.

Assuming that they avoid grinding, have a fair payment scheme and deliver on their promise of unique turn based combat, this could be a great game. Fail on any one of those counts... and we have another awful MMO in a sea of awful MMOs.

Perhaps the game is already done and released in asia long time ago and the beta is for promotion only.

    At 2)

You are totally right, but we do not know yet. Let us sit and wait how the game will turn out and then we can judge it.

well it depends, if this game has grinding then it wouldnt be very good since turn-based games are famous for taking a very long time to kill mobs

  • RaltarRaltar Member UncommonPosts: 829

Maybe you guys are thinking of a different kind of  "turn based" than I am.

If its Final Fantasy style turn based then yeah, that would be a total joke.

But I was of the impression that since it says you would control up to nine characters that it would be more of a strategic turn based type of game, such as Vandal Hearts for the playsation (I really hope I'm not the only person who still remembers that game) or like the Tactics Ogre games. I'm sure you guys know the type of game I'm talking about. I know that sort of combat may be a little to slow paced for some people but I have always preferred strategy over button mashing and if this game can deliver that then I say more power to it.

To avoid grinding, I would do something along the lines of what Guild Wars did where you gained levels very quickly and the level cap was set rather low, so you could only become so powerful through grinding and after that you had to attain more skills and develop new tactics in order to become any better at the game. They already said that for this game you would have one main character and the other characters you control during a battle will be people you "hired" to fight for you. Perhaps it would only be your main character who levels and the "hired goons" could be just red shirts who have set skills and when they die you replace them. That would make sense to me.

But yeah, its an asain MMO. I'm probably asking for way too much here...

    turn based is disgusting

In all likeliness, this has been out in Asia for a bit and this 'beta' is actually just a test of the American market and the American server(s).

I really hope that the grinding isn't as bad as other games from Korea. I'm just hoping that the battles rekindle the love of RPGs.

Seems like the concept is great though, and I agree with the three points made previous.

As for the 'turn based is disgusting' comment by nightwing, please don't be another ignorant gamer. Know your roots and appreciate them. I'd be willing to bet your a nice little kid, but you probably never played any of the classics. Go back, don't complain about the graphics, and learn about a real RPG.

It appears, based on the available information searching online, that the game's message "coming in July 2008" is referring to the closed beta(or the website in general)... which is supposed to start towards the end of july. Also the only mention of it on english language press has been the announced release and the dev journal.

Does anyone know enough korean to be able to comment on if it was previously released based on the korean website?  If so please clue us in.

Well if it turn based it probaly gonna be like Wonderland Online but 3D and better i hope

  • PrinnySquadPrinnySquad Member Posts: 90

Strategic turn-based? Sold. I'll at least give it a shot.

Those of you unsophisticated enough to just bash the turn-based aspect of it can just go play every other online game ever made that isn't turn based.

The ADD mentality of modern "gamers", if you can call them that, is more about mouse clicking than thinking.

This at least deserves a solid look by them being daring enought to do that.

But yeah, if the gameplay is poor or a bad grind, then oh well... I hope it doesn't discourage others from doing it right.

Edit: I give it five out of five prinny bombs on premise. We'll see how it plays!

The question was never answered, free to play like most other Korean RPGs or no?

I don't think anyone knows yet. Their website doesn't say.

But we will soon find out (I asked them!):

    atlantica.ndoorsgames.com/center/ATforum/forums/thread-view.asp

EDIT: Oh, another thing. It looks like this game is made/run by the same people who made some other MMO called "Luminary" (You have to register an account which can access both games to access the Atlantica forum) which I've never heard of and isn't even listed here on MMORPG.com... so more confusion...

It's not luminary its considered goonzu online here on mmorpg.com

  • RaltarRaltar Member UncommonPosts: 829

    Ah... I see.

After reading some of the reviews for "GoonZu" it seems like it has a LOT in common with the features Atlantica claims to have. Turn-based combat, player driven economy and player owned cities just to name a few features. It seems that some of the fans of GoonZu even thought these features were fairly well done. Oddly, this is the kind of game that might even interest Pre-CU SWG fans.

Sadly though, it sounded like GoonZu had a lot of problems and I wouldn't be suprised if Atlantica inherited a lot of the problems along with the features. Seems there were a lot of complaints about incompetent game masters, bad community, boring combat and extreme grinding. None of which is a suprise to me in an asian MMO.

My expectations of this game just dropped to nothing. I'm glad I took the time to learn all I could about this game now, because now I don't need to hold my breath waiting for it (or waste my time trying to get into the beta). For those of you who plan to continue to follow this game I suggest you play "GoonZu" first and see if its your cup of tea, because Atlantica appears to be more less the same game with updated graphics.

If your a fan of final fantsay which mosltly is turn based then I think you should try this. Plus the computer version might offer more strategic battling for more in depth combat system.

    Meaning- I'll give it a try :)

    Preach it!

This game may end up sucking really bad, I expect them all to be bad anymore... but at least they are trying something new, and I'll give it a fair try just for that.

From what I gathered on my brief visit to their site, it appears that you will control multiple characters.  It will be interesting to see how much it is like a traditional turn based strategy game.

Also the graphics look really nice on their few screenshots.

  • AvarwenAvarwen Member Posts: 5

I'll give it a go looks like it might be fun.  The player base should be small with all the turn based haters not even looking at it . I hope it will keep the "noobs" who clog up every other MMO  out.
