I spent the last 7 months seriously analyzing World of Warcraft, Dark and Light, and Everquest 2.
I spent 7 months looking at the same topics over and over and over and over in the main forums lol.
I spent 7 months looking at each website and their progress. I even spent some time on the WoW Beta (phase one). Here is why I choose EQ2:
1. Everquest has a better media presentation over any other. If SOE will shell out millions of dollars to put their game trailors in movie theatres, that impresses me and grabs my attention. That tells me the're taking it seriously...SWG was just talk talk talk with very little advertising. I think SOE has learned from thewir mistakes as it were.
2. The general game mechanics appeals to me. Just my opinion..not saying the other games mechanics sucks.
3. The Official Site forums. Whether you want to agree with me or not, the truth still remains. A good 80% (if not, more)of everyone on those offical forums who posts constantly will sooner or later buy their product. With that being said, I have noticed EQ2 has the most mature audience than the other two. World of Warcraft being the worse. I have observed the WoW forums (without making one single post) and I have realized many of them are downright little brats. I would even be safe and liberal to say that over 60% of the forums over their are ran by trolls of all sorts.
With that being said....I really don't want to see over 40% of the ingame community to be like that of the forums.
4. I'm not big into graphics, however I am big into innovativeness (sp). Don't get me wrong i love good graphics...but I find that i like everything to be just as good. EQ2 broke the mold by breaking (or trying) out of th mmorpg rut of everything looking like each other. For example, the talking NPCs is a step forward. Much better than all other mmorpgs currently out.
5. The movie trailor for the theatres, really impressed me as did the 7 minute video of one of the producers describing the various game mechanics as the demo progressed. One of the first things he said was "this are actual in game plays...nothing has been doctored to make it look nicer than it really is)...so if you have a good vid card, then you're gonna be immersed in this game in ways you have never done before. Hence, I like that.
6. This game looks more realistic than the others. Dark and Light came in a VERY close second, and WoW was just way too Saturday morning cartoonish. During my play of WoW I noticed that Lineage][ graphics were better than WoW. Some people really like the Saturday morning cartoon thing...but I'm more of a realism kinda guy.
Well, those are the main reasons.
Second reason is, I found a good guild that's made up of a lot of guys here at mmorpg.com....so we'll have many things already in common.
Not saying WoW or Dark and Light or any other mmorpg sucks...I'm just giving my reasons why I choose EQ2 over all the other new soon-to-be release games

VERY well written and spot on in my opinion, all the same reason I'm going with EQ2 over the competition.

I've ordered 2 copies of EQ II - well, actually my wife and kids gave me a collector pre order for my birthday, and I ordered the 2nd collector as soon as I found out what was in it.
I thought that the Starter kit was a cool idea and I had a lot of trouble in EQ originally getting my J Boots, so I'm glad I'll get them with my new chars.
First day on this board, so pardon any slip ups

I have read up alot about EQ2, and what grabs my attention in this game is the content. Tons of quests, voice actors, areas, tradeskills... This is one of the games you will be playing for 5 years (much like EQlive was).
Also this is SOE. They may be a bitch, but they have money. Enough to hire tons of voice actors, promotions, weekly updates (i hope), they can do basically whatever they please with this game.

Very well written! If I agree or not is beside the point, but it is real nice to see a person that can give several solid, well thought out reasons why he choose one product in front of the other, and not use the "fan club argumentation" ("Yer club suck, my club rocks")
I really do the same when I pick a game, put up several pros and cons then see where the pros outweigh the most. Right now.. I have no idea in... that hot place downstairs with nasty monsters anstuff. I really have no idea what game I will choose this winter. Most frustrating.
Only the future can tell so far.
Only game I wait for right now: Imperator.

With respect to pricing, I've seen a posting by SOE (through their Riches contest) that you will be able to play EQ1 and EqII through their Access Pass system.
That means for $21.99 per month you can play both games. Makes me think that EQII will be about $13 per month by itself, just like EQ1
Just an observation....

I'd be safe to say it'll be 14.99
That's the price for any current mmorpg right now (current, I mean somewhat new)
plus, i dont see them going down to 13 as they know they'll have followers so there's no need to "be the best in prices like Wal*Mart.
I think it was 16 a month, many would complain but SOE know they'll still play it lol

Yeah, it was a tough call, but I have preordered as well( the regular DVD-ROM edition, the CE is too pricey for me). A lot of my guild buds are going for WoW, and that actually does sound like it's fun in a lot of ways (though I too have misgivings about the community), but I feel a little more drawn to EQ2. I think they'll both be good games, and I'll most likely end up giving both a try to compare them (I hope they don't come out at the same time though, heh), but EQ2 is a bit ahead so far for me.

I pre-ordered my two copies as well. However, I am going to get WoW also. Which one to play could be the hardest decision of my gaming career. Not that I get paid, but I do play alot.

I pre-ordered 2 copies as well from Gamestop.com. The DVD version for me and CD-Rom for the wife. When the starter pack arrived I only recieved 1 char starter kit and 1 jboots game code. I dont mind only 1 char creation kit but want the other jboots code or I will cancel the order... Anyone else have this problem?

Very well written. I never really thought about the fact that the majority of people posting for a game will be the same people playing. (even though it is obvious) I personally have not made a 100% decision about the game to play, but I am leaning towards eq2. Guess you gave me one more factor to consider.
Thanks..

I have pre-ordered this one as well, I checked out the forums and the community that is developing looks promising. I have also pre-oredered WoW after playing in the stress test, it will be interesting to see which one I will stay with.
