DC Universe Online

Well Sony's E3 press conference just finished and they announced DC Universe Online for the PC and PS3. It's a superhero/villain MMO based around the DC comic universe....

RIPOFF ANYONE???!?!?

Marvel Universe Online was being developed before this, but got canceled. It seems Sony decided to steal their idea but just switch universes. What a damn ripoff. Also, the Joker looks awful.

I wouldn't say it's a rip off, I think DC has been in the works longer, and even if it is a rip off... who cares if it's a good game?

    SOE = Bad game

  • PsychoJon200PsychoJon200 Member UncommonPosts: 24

I dunno, but im excited. It seems to be supported now with Sony, so i hope it does well and it wont get canceled. I dont think Sony stole the idea as much as DC took over. I really cant wait to see more info on this and what kind of system for money and maybe a "hide out" and what not.

Really, i do agree on how the heros/villains look. They do look pretty bad...i mean Batman is over buff and Joker is way too skinny.

I do hope to find out if they are going to have a system of their alter ego and how that will play into the game.

DC Comics, Sony Online Entertainment and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Announce Plans for Comic Book Icon Jim Lee to Work on MMO Game Based on the DC Universe

    February 27, 2006

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/6158912.html

In February, Sony Online Entertainment announced it was making a massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the DC Comics universe for PCs and "next-generation consoles." Though no specific platform was mentioned, given SOE's involvement, it was pretty clear that the console in question would be the PlayStation 3.

The move was a response to Microsoft's July 2005 announcement that it was making an Xbox 360 superhero MMORPG based on the library of DC's archnemesis, Marvel Comics. Today, the game was given a title, Marvel Universe Online, and was officially unveiled as the first original massively multiplayer game created for the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista. It will also let players on both platforms interact in the same gameworld.

ewwwwww an SOE game... yuck, I won't be touching it.
Seriously though, their pics look horrendous, I think I'll be trying Champions Online instead. I was INCREDIBLY disappointed with the way they portrayed Nightwing in their pics (one of my favorite characters, next to Batman and The Question) and the way the joker looked was a joke (no pun intended) so I know I won't be giving this game a shot. Also, knowing SOE's history with MMO's, I know for certain I won't be giving it a shot.

LOL yea I saw "SoE" for it, then thought "Im not touching that piece of shit"

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

Another console/PC abortion.  Despite the greed, you just cannot marry the two.  Good MMO's require more controls than a console allows for.  AoC is a prime example.

The has big time flop written all over it.

Well one IP being given over to a sucky developer. Pretty sad for DC don't they do any in-depth research.  It sound like they are just pushing this for X360 and the PC side will be an after thought.

Not necessarily true though, look at FFXI, that one is for PC, 360 and PS2. and some MMO's could potentially play well with a controller. When I played CoH, I played with a PC controller that looks a lot like a PS2 controller, then use the keyboard and mous for chatting. Using the controller made fighting mobs A LOT easier to do. So it is, possible, if you know how to do it right. In a sense, I'm kinda disappointed that WoW doesn't have this customization because I'd like to use my controller for that game as well.

If they were planning to push this for the 360 why in the heck would they want to go with SOE????? I think SOE would sooner try to push this for teh PS3 than the 360.

I know other people responded to this but DC Universe was announced before the Marvel game.

Waaaaaay back when SOE took over MxO they only took that pos (no offense to those that like the game.. I wish you had better support) as it was required in the deal for the rights to the DC game.

I mean the Marvel game isn't that the one Cryptic was announced as doing (after the DC announcement) then it was canned and they took what they had to make Champions Online?

    Or am I missing something...

and sorry not a SOE fan.. just what I remember.

At least the DC game they can start off the bat with Iconic classes... and you can have your very own light saber.. err special powers (maybe they'll add a cash mall where you can buy other leet powers and better spandex).

    /end ramble

There is nothing wrong with some competition.

With three superhero games out there will be healthy competition. It all depends if one of the studios (Cryptic or SOE) would go all the away and make a large, complete mmo.

I would fear that they will end up being pushed out like many mmos these days.

Right now Champions Online sounds cool. Like the graphics too.

Champions will do very will. Cryptic got it right the first time with City of Heroes/Villains and they learned so much from it. They can only do better with Champions and I cannot wait for it.

DC Universe has potential but I just think it will fail. The Supehero genre should stay limited. The market needs more sci-fi MMOs.

  • PsychoJon200PsychoJon200 Member UncommonPosts: 24

True, but i do have a feeling that it will be good also. I do have to say and repeat the graphics is pretty bad. I do want to see how their system will work.

  • RhenkarRhenkar Member UncommonPosts: 68

Wow that trailer is really bad.

It could almost be good if you never saw anything move...

Once the characters started moving it looked terrible.  The animations, or lack thereof, are horrendous.

i hope Champions Online smokes DC Universe. The HERO system (PnP that cryptic is inspired by) really deserves to see digital space. There has never been a HERO system game made. I always said developers should try to give HERO system a try and Cryptic heard my wishes.

They honestly deserve success and did their hard work on CoX.

thx for the trailer link. but even though i own a PS3, i'll never get an MMORPG on a console. PC all the way, baby!

I've been a Batman/Superman fan since the day I was born. So i'm definitely gonna try it out.

oh no, I just watched that vid. I guess its still early but see hte beauty of City of Heroes was that you could make your *own* original superhero.

This game why they showing superman, wonder woman, nightwing, joker, etc? I want to make my own green lantern member or what have you. It would seem to me you want to show in your trailer how players can make their own heroes???

    I guess it looks okay

You're looking at a very beta version of the game. They plan for it to take full advantage of the PS 3 system. The team aside from having Kick ass comic artist  has many of the original guys that  developed CoH..in fact one of the reasons MS pulled out of Marvel Universe online was due to cryptic losing several key developers to DC Universe Online, also the Brass at MS Knew that what Cryptic was developing which boys and girls is Now Champions online  (That's Right CO is just MuO in a different skin) could not compete with what Warner and SOE was developing.  Hate all you want this game is going to kick ass.

Established Heroes/Villains in this game (Superman Batman Joker)  will be used like Henchmen/Heroes in Guild Wars. Missions will scale depending on how many is in your group (Group Cap is six Plus Two Henchmen equals 8) Which henchmen helps you decided on what happens in the mission, the quest system will consist of Story based missions like LOTRO, with Heroic Raid Type missions for end game, Bases Vehicles, a Player Driven Storyteller Mission system will be included at launch and a in Game version of The DC Versus system Trading card game that will offer loot cards that will grant special abilities and special henchmen to use in missions.

All of this info will be handed out later this year but  Since I know several folks on the team I have gotten the inside scoop

That's an oxymoron, lol.  Champions Online graphics are disgusting.

Yeah but they weren't done by SOE.

Speak for yourself, sorry, but at least the cell-shaded style of Champions Online actually looks like a comic book. DCU's graphics just look like a copy paste models from CoH. The only thing they have going for them it seems, is that they're using a well known IP, just as with SWG, no surprise. Sorry, but I simply can't trust SOE with any MMO nowadays. Hate CO all you want, you're entitled to your opinion but lets be honest here, we are talking about SOE here.

Oh, that Joker looks like crap, and the few player made hero shots in that trailer don't look all that promising either.

Can you even create your own hero in this game? Champions was a big step forward because you can create your own hero and even customize the colors of the powers (assuming they stick to it this time). There will be no archetypes or predefined Classes. And how will PVP be?

PVE is cool and all but that gets dull after 1 or 2 max level characters and devs never can keep up with the pace that players level. Champions appeal in letting us build our own heroes from scratch makes grinding an attractive option. At least I'm building my own hero from scratch. I'd rather do that then be a carbon copy of "Superman" like 5,000 others.

Even if you have no problem with the company developing the game, the game's development history should worry you.  The DCUO development team has had at least four different lead designers and has been bleeding development team members from the beginning.  The only real stablility the development of the game has had is that Jim Lee (a comic book artist) has been the art director for the game, and is supposedly doing some writing as well.

As an extra added bonus, two of the former lead designers are the guy who came up with the NGE combat system for Star Wars Galaxies (Dan "Om Nom Nom" Rubenfield) and the former lead designer of Star Wars Galaxies that a large chunk of the folks who currently play SWG hate, Kai Steinmann (Helios).  According to the rumor that has been posted to a couple gameing news sites (Gamasutra and Kotaku have posted it over a year ago), the game's creative direction is being directed by SOE's management, who vie the game as their potential flagship title, which has caused conflict with the folks on the development team, which in turn has cause a regular turnover of developers.

The most likely result of the turnover in developers is that the game is going to be a mess.
