Graphics Card

RagrappyRagrappy Member Posts: 26

Wanting to start playing EQ2 again. Last time I tried it, it loaded fairly quickly but the movement so very choppy, and typing was near impossible, as when I typed letters got missed out.

Computer I have is a Dell Dimension 3100, which comes with onboard graphics (I suppose thats why it ran shit last time). Dunno what card to get now. Anyone recommend? Not on a very high budget, nothing about 50.

Think of it this way, I use a Radeon 9600 Pro, and I run the game just fine. So really you can't go wrong, even with a $80 budget lol.

I run it on high settings just fine with a Geforce 7600 GT.

I run it pretty damn good on my agp -x1650 and thats was just 75bucks

My PC apparently has a "PCI-e" graphics card slot, so yeah. Also am from UK so I reckon stuff will be more expensive :P

Use a e-GeForce8600+ they run pretty nice on it...

That'll run it fine? Can I return something like this if it doesn't work (like it wont fit for whatever reason, still runs EQ2 not well) ?

I heard that you cant return computer related products once they have been used once.

Yeah, that'll work great for EQ2 but if you want less lag I'd recommend 512mb but not a HUGE difference, it'll work just great.

    Ok, thanks!

So do you know if stuff like this is returnable? Would hate for monies to possibly go to waste if something goes wrong.

Umm...I think it's returnable, but I'd look at the pc requirments to see if it'll work, if it will then you don't need to worry but if you do have the requirments and it dosen't work return it, just make sure you don't try too hard on putting it in, the lightest LIGHTEST scratch could cause massive problems. Also I'd look at some guides on finding how to put it in. GL with your card. Also if it dosent and they cant return it I'd keep it and sell it probably on ebay for about 10$ more hehe you'll get some deals. But it really depends on if the store will return them, I'd call them and ask them or look for some disclaimers...

I went to this site: http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/pcperipherals/0,39051163,39096664p,00.htm

for info on my comp, and it says that there are:

    PCI slots (free)

    2 x PCI slots; 1 x PCI-Express slot

    And the card needs 1x PCI-e x16

So I suppose thats not gonna fit, right? There is a picture of the inside on the overview bit on that page, dunno if that would show whats what because I dont know what to look for. :P

  • DloreDlore Member UncommonPosts: 462

Hmm....it might work, PCI-Express might stand for pci-e but I'd say call the company and ask, if it dosent and ATI Radeon 1600+ would probably fit in your PC, they go for like 30-40$ now right?

  • TunangoTunango Member Posts: 79

PCI-e does stand for PCI express so yes it will fit

You've only got 256mb of ram and a 230w power supply they are also gonna be your problems,

you might be waisting your money, the whole pc is not up to scratch really.

  • RagrappyRagrappy Member Posts: 26

Yeah, im pretty sure pci-e is pci-express, but is a PCI-e any different from a "PCI Express x16", which is what the card wants? D:

Ya, you might just need a whole new pc, but I'd say call them and see if it'll work, but if it dosent just get a graphics card that uses recommended in the lowest spec

I upgraded the RAM when I tried to play before. When I first played EQ2, I didn't upgrade the RAM but bought a 50 pound graphics card. There was no lag at all except for inside one of the cities, but I was waiting around 40 mins for areas to load. That computer got throw away a while ago, included the card (much to my frustration..).

So on this comp, I upgraded the RAM and loading was fairly quick and easy but the game was really choppy. I got just under 1 GIG RAM now I think (1014 MB?), but it really is unplayable in the choppy state it is in now.

  • TunangoTunango Member Posts: 79

Well you did upgrade your ram to 1 gig so yes it might be ok, when you get to novatech ask them for advice before buying.

  • DloreDlore Member UncommonPosts: 462

Ya, I get problems with lag and I play AoC on high with no lag at all, if it's choppy just get something alittle beter, if it's lag its just the server I think

Surely its eaiser to find a card that'll run it fine than buy a whole new comp for EQ2?

Anyway, all I need are these for the card

    Got that..

CD Drive is kinda broken but works sometimes

50MB? Thats alot, got 72MB free

Using Windows xp Media Center edition

    Dunno about the motherboard one..

    Wah?

    ???

    • 512MB of system memory
    • CD or DVD-ROM drive
    • 50MB of available hard disk drive space for basic driver installation
    • Microsoft Windows Vista or XP operating system
    • PCI Express-compliant motherboard with one vacant PCI Express x16 slot
    • 350W PCI Express-compliant system power supply**
    • One 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors

Well not really, buying a new card you have to open your pc and be careful, you could even brake the whole pc if you're not careful, my friend accidently scratched something and he sometimes gets bluescreen like 3-8times a day

The person who would be doing all the parts bit is trustworthy in not messing up the comp, so thats not really a concern :P

"A Pci-express X16 slot is the dedicated graphics slot. The other variant, Pci-express X1 (a much smaller slot) cannot be used for graphics cards."

-.- My computer has a Pci-express x1 slot.. Aghh, I thought I had finally solved this card problem! What now? Buy a new motherboard or something? D:

Edit: How would this card do? http://www.rlsupplies.co.uk/products.asp?partno=90-C1CJF0-HUAY00Z

A PCI-E card would work in any of the PCI-E slots regardless whether it is 1x 16x or 2.0 version, the only difference will be the performance.....So you should be fine with the motherboard you have atm.....But I'd recommend going for a nice motherboard with onboard GeForce 8400, then you do not even need to buy a Graphics card.....EQ2 will play fine on it.....and as an additional bonus you'll get more RAM slots so you can have higher RAM which according to me is the most important for playing MMO's.

I have decided to save up for a new laptop, since I wont have to do any jiggerypokery inside the comp, and I will be able to play EQ2 wherever!

    http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/190449

If you could take a look at that and see if thats ok, that would be great. No-one has posted in there yet :P

I know it would probably make more sense to just get the card for this comp, but I dont trust this thing at all, and I just know something will go wrong which = wasted monies most of the time.
