We are not currently looking for freelance and / or paid writers. We are looking for volunteer writers for our correspondent program.

Think of it as a way of padding your resume.   You do work for free, and if they like it, it gets to a place where many more will see it.      With success under your belt, a time may come in the future where you can ask for a salary and have stuff like this as credentials.

I work in publishing, and I can tell you that if I were hiring, I would laugh and laugh at anyone who put MMORPG.com on his resume.

Hey people, I have an even better employment opportunity for you!  I need some guys to whitewash my picket fence and I'll pay three times (3X) what mmorpg.com pays!!!!

What the heck, just thought I'd throw that out there.  Is mmorpg.com the Tom Sawyer of gaming sites?

Well I know that I can say without a shadow of a doubt writing and mod'ing for MMORPG.com is what got me my foot in the door of the industry, and it also didn't hurt me getting a couple reviews posted in the local paper, etc. Granted, if your final goal is to end up doing something outside of the video game industry, there are definitely better places to write for, but IMO any published writing experience is better than no published writing experience. And if you are trying to get into the game industry, it's definitely a step in the right direction.

We are a completely independent site. The only money we have is the money that the site makes and we have no outside investors. As a result, we don't have a large writing budget. We have always been a volunteerand community focused site and will continue to be in the future.

    Well, that's really your loss.

    While
MMORPG.com is not the New York Times, nor any other mainstream media source, it is a place of business. Articles, even small ones, are read by thousands of people. It requires a knowledge of the industry, and the ability to convey information through the written word not to mention any number of other skills that could be of value.

I don't mean to tell you how to do your job, but since you don't seem to mind belittling mine I'll go ahead and say that you may want to re-consider your hiring policies. You could be missing out on some good people.

    Hey Hexxity,

If by publishing....you mean stacking books....then have at it.

    MMORPG.com has great game coverage.

Sorry it's not New Yorker enough for you....

go read and quote some writer and think you're cool....

In the common vernacular of my people; I was just giving you some sh-t.

In other words, I was just joking, making light of the situation, horsing around, being facetious.  A comment intended to elicit humor.

It seems I failed miserably, illustrating my ineptitude at writing.  In light of this development I will not be applying for the available positions.

As a person who works in publishing, surely you mean "their" resume, not "his" resume. Because frankly, that would be very amateur of you to say something like that.  Sorry, but your xeroxed neighborhood newsletter/fanzine doesn't count.

To be honest some of the best writers here on this site are posting in the forums and blogging, then again so are some of the worst

Laughing at people that are doing an efforts to start at the bottom of the ladder is downright unprofessional. Many years ago, I started as a game tester, then eventually became a lead tester, QA coordinator, Senior porting coordinator and etc...

The great thing is, each time I take on a new role, I have all the background and knowledge to support my new role.

I myself applied to do some work for this site. :P

      Hex's post was pretty harsh.....

There are a very substantial number of people who, when starting at the bottom of a given field, have to work for free just to get the needed experience under them.  Fashion, Music, Acting....these are just a few from the top of my head that require you to work for free in small venues before you EVER get looked at for anything with a salary attached to it.  As a musician myself...let me assure you, I've played at some pretty bottom tier places just to get the sound out there and get more comfortable with playing on a stage.

Its a natural part of moving forward into a career.  I'm rather insulted that Hex would say any of the things that were said.  Hell...Yahtzee Croshaw got his start doing nothing more than making youtube videos.  I bet every last one of us would probably laugh at the very ideal of using THAT as a "resume item", but using nothing more than this he is now being paid to do something he loved.

I know that I personally find mmorpg.com miles more professional (in regard to its writers) than something I'd pull off of youtube.  They are a site that is recognized by basically ALL of the industry.  Being backed by a group of people who are considered highly in the industry you are interested in is a GREAT way to break in, if you ask me.

EDIT:  there ARE...not there IS.  Good god, I apparently need to go back to high school for a month.

Grammatical errors?  How did you get hired?

I work in games industry myself. If I were asked to give my opinion on a candidate and I see they have writing experience for a site that would count. Game developers value passion above all else. We tend to work crazy hours. If you don;t have the passion, then you probably won't last long

Writing experience helps towards acquiring game designer positions. the only danger is that if your views is too different from what the company is seeking

This is true.  I am a small business owner in an industry completely unrelated to gaming.  When they first opened the Blog section of this site, I decided to start ranting as an old time MMO'er because I have a real passion for these games.  My silly rants combined have over 5000 views, and I have received PM's from a Dev or two back in the day giving me props and asking me my take on certain things.   While I don't intend or plan to persue a career in MMO's as fun as it would be, this site gets a fair amount of traffic, and acts as a way to feel the pulse of today's MMO gamer towards various games and the genre.

I know I seemed pretty harsh, and I will add that I was referring to unpaid positions.  I know that doesn't soften it much, but there you go.  The gaming industry has infamously low editorial standards, and they seem to be getting lower all the time; this is not something I can ignore.

However, if I were running a PR firm or an ad agency, I imagine I would LOVE to hire anyone associated with this site.  This is not sarcasm or exaggeration.

I guess it all depends on the sort of writing you want to do.
