Can they pull it off?

MX13MX13 Member Posts: 2,489

I think we all can agree that AoC is EXTREAMLY ambitious, so I thought I'd ask a simle question:

Can they pull it off?

Please, feel free to discuss... I'm very interested in what theories are out there...

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

Of course, we're talking about FunCom here, the makers of Anarchy Online and so on. Anarchy Online has the best gameplay I've ever seen, it's really vivid and complex, and thus I don't expect AoC to get any lesser threatment in terms of gameplay. I would rather think they would improve the things that weren't that great, and make AoC even better.

AO was the biggest train wreck ever to be released period.  This will be just as bad.  When I see people say good things about AO, it makes me wonder about the kind of drugs they must be taking.   Who could ever forget AO's launch?  If thats not enough look at its recent broken expansion.   AoC will not be any different.

AO is a pretty popular game with a pretty large player base. AoC will do just fine. It's doing things other MMO companies wouldn't even consider.

How long did you play after release? 2 days?Because it doesn't seem like you know crap about the 5.5 next years. And i wonder what kinda drug you take if you mean  AoC's release is bound to be exacly as bad as AO's,thats just hate talk imho.

Also according to www.mmogchart.com   AO at its height had only 60,000 subs wich decreased sharply after launch right now there is barely 10,000 subscriptions.   AO really never had a large player base.

I played AO for 6 months after launch.  I returned when SL was released and left 3 months later it was crap.  I tried again when they made AO free but it was still crap just with less people.  So there goes that theory that I dont know crap about AO 5 years later lol

I personally have very high expectations. I've followed it very closely recently and no other mmo has captured me in as AoC has now. They have been very ambicious and I really do believe its going to be a great game :)

    We'll see in 6months :D

Anarchy Online has over 100,000 current players.  The reason that it says that it has fewer than that on mmogcharts is because (to be fair to other games) they only count paid subscriptions.  Anarchy Online is free to play (supported by in game advertising), but the players playing this 'free' version aren't counted as 'subscribers'.

Exactly what you said Arakian! I myself have not played AO but I can tell you that AoC will be able to pull it off. The combat style is new and looks fantastic from the videos I watched. The fact that you can lob off your oppenents head is a good enough example. The fighting is not like the traditional press 1,2,3, kill repeat. It involves movement fighting as well. Depending on the weapon, if you move right by pressing D, the swing will move in that direction, and by pressing A to the left, the swing will go up and if you press W while moving the swing you can plunge into your opponent. THis is only ONE example of a combo out of many. Plus you have the feats, skills, and many more,

Actually MMOGcharts is wrong, the guy who runs it will tell you strait that it's mostly educated guesses. He has no real inside info, he takes actual release numbers that he can get and kinda fudges the rest. I can sight several examples of how he is off right now.

1: The chart shows SWG increasing rapidly after release and leveling out around spring 2004, then in late 2004 dropping dramaticly. This is wrong actually. In late Spring 2004, the CU was introduced and while the 'rumors' said that the game crashed and burned at that point, the fact was that there were probably more people playing the game then there were at release. The servers were packed, most of those who had only seen 'light' activity for the last many months were now 'extremely heavy' populations, so bad the game had significant problems with server traffic. Then around mid fall that year, the NGE was released, and that is when the game took a sharp downturn. The chart makes absolutely no mention of these events.

2: Anarchy Online's head developer (and now head of AoC) Guate Gadeger(sp) said in an interview, about 2 years after the game came out (june of 03) that the game had spiked since the release of Shadowlands and had broken the 200'000 player barrier and at the time set several records for server capacity. This was in fact the ONLY time they ever talk about numbers. The chart shows absolutely no mention of this (though at the time I used to mail him articles revealing details about population numbers, though he chose to ignore almost every single one of them, or at least didn't think them viable, I don't know for sure, the guy is very cocky and self-absorbed. Well he used to be anyway.

3: World of Warcraft has 8 million accounts. According to the chart, it has less then 7. That right there shows it's wrong (granted the chart doesn't show anything past 6 odd months ago.)

So yea, don't go to that website for your numbers, the majority are from games that never actually release their information, a few may actually be accurate, the rest are educated guesses and conjecture.

Clouded the Truth of SWG is...

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

This thread is full of win.    I swore to myself that I would post in this thread again after AoC's launch for alittle vindication.

    Victory is mine!

You hit the nail right on the head! From now on before I look at another mmo, im gonna search you out and see what you say about it. I never thought AoC would turn out to be this big of a piece of garbage.

How does a game which sold 100k copies before release have a peak of 60k subs?

Was that sold 100k copies to the retailer or to the customers? Funcom often uses copies shipped as a substitute for copies sold, to seem more impressive than it is. Sort of like what they did with AoC's 'created accounts'.

Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
    Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.

They need to stop turning a blind eye to the rampant exploiting of their raid content.   I was just silenced on their boards for demanding action against guild who I know for a fact were cascading lockout timers.   I may copy what I said over here on this site soon so people understand exactly how they have compromised the integrity of their game.

This game still has the most advanced graphics engine out on the MMO market, which gives the game time to fix itself up. The new patch is a step in the right direction.

This is a case where the game was just too much for the player. And for that he gave up.

Well they sure as hell did pull it of, they pulled a fast one and made a lot of money and now they are leaving the game to root. They sure pulled one on people.

I'll give a simple man's opinion here, having not played Anarchy Online and frankly never even hearing of Funcom before AoC. The only reason alot of people would be this disappointed is if the game had tons of potential, so you're right on that point. By keeping an eye on what Funcom's been doing through pre-launch and now post-launch, they seem to be making many mistakes. Though they can't do everything wrong, and the negative is much louder than the positive, so I say maybe. They could really be trying or they could be putting on a show to scam more suckers, I don't know.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
