I'm not sure if anyone remembers but Microsoft published a game a few years back called Freelancer, it was a great single player game very similar to the old Wing Comander: Privateer.  I loved those games, do you think this game will have the same feel as those?

    Freelancer rocked :D

    X3 is also good.

Yes, JGE will have a very similar  (but improved in many aspects) combat and economy system.

Altho Freelancer rocked my socks off, the scaleing kept bothering me, but I know for a fact that Jumpgate has this covered, so keep your fingers crossed that the beta will be out soon :D

The flight mechanic is very different compared to Freelancer.

Other than that it is very similar. I can't wait to play in the beta

    I remember that game.

I like "X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter", later it was "Wing Commander 3" and, a few year ago, "Freelancer" and "Darkstar One".

I played a lot these games and I'm waiting for another one of this kind.

I've been flying in Jumpgate Classic, and even then the only games that were comparable considering the size and feeling of freedom were the ones mentioned above.

From what I gathered so far on the official forums, from dev chats, etc. the mission system they planning to add will be exactly what I've missed in JGC.

But as probably mentioned a lot of times already, getting used to the newtonian flight-model is a complete different story (but they're adding 'dampeners' to allow for a more Freelancer'ish flight feeling in small ships).

Privateer the darkining, freelancer and wingcommander are the 3 games i have played the most. and may i say they ROCK.

i am realy looking forward to JGE and will deffently buy it.

i must say though, that i am not getting my hopes up, because i have been disapointet so many many times theese last few years, with all those WoW clones out there.

But i´ll bet that this is the game that can change the game industry view on how an mmo needs to be.....

    I will buy it...

I've had Freelancer for years and I still haven't finished the game LOL I still got the saves, but a couple of time I had to start over and then had to get involve with other things.

However, I played Jumpgate Classic first. I liked Freelancer, but I think the gameplay will be very different. I hate not using a joystick in FL.

    Freelancer was great!

In that case I am turned off. I was a HUGE fan of freelancer's intuitive mouse/keybopard combat system and though I got both flight sticks and a joystick I always prefered Freelancer's mouse/keyboard setup over X3's joystick or Eve's overworld view.

Live with an open mind my friend.

Don't get turned off by something simply because it isnt what you know.

I loved the FL control system as well, but JG:E have recieved nothing but praise for theirs. Lets give it a chance before we throw it in the bin :)

I think which control style is appropriate depends on the rest of the game design.

Freelancer had a combination of dogfighting and guns that could be angled away from the current flight direction by 30 degrees or so. The mouse aiming/steering was great for that, even if I tended to get a cramp in my index finger after a few hours.

X2 (didn't play X3) had fixed guns, no aiming separately from the ship. In that case, you need something to control the flight as accurately as possible. Like a good joystick.

And finally, EvE has way too much lag to be twitch-based, as well as a lot of larger ships that are not suitable for dogfighting. Actually, I think only the frigate class of EvE would be fun to play freelancer-style.

Freelancer was such an awesome game.  I've been looking for gameplay like that ever since.  I can't believe there was never a Freelancer 2, but maybe the first wasn't that popular.  Which is odd, since so many people who have played it have rave reviews.

  • AntariousAntarious Member UncommonPosts: 2,846

Ya I had just bought Freelancer when I moved into this apartment which was *ponder* like March of 2003.

I still install and play it from time to time.  I've always liked those types of games..  Way back to Elite on my C64.

Wing Commander and Privateer  were obviously games I enjoyed as well.

    Oh and of course Starlancer...

Freelancer was a great game, but it didn't have alot of content so to speak and for some reason was dropped by the creators. Luckly the game was some what moddable, but it toke time for modders to figure it out and make good mods.

I remember some of the first mods where terrible. They where pretty much just ship packs. Latter on some great mods came out that changed the game around for good, but saddly the game hasn't lasted.

I am hoping the creators of JGE can see where Freelancer fell. It was a great game, but was just dropped and left for the modders who couldn't fully mod it anyway.

((Also I know JGE will not be made to be modded since it will be more like an MMO then freelancer was.))

They are making mouse&keyboard flying mode , that is very very good (so people that play it say)

Also there is two alternative flying modes aswell. Newtonian (like in Elite and Jumpgate Classic) and Dumpener Assisted (like in Freelancer)

And you can switch them at will , creating interesting flying tactics

For Space Sim fans, I am shocked that not a single person has mentioned the Freespace series yet.  Privateer and X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter were classics, and Freelancer was a great game, but both FS games, especially number 2, blow them all out of the water.

I would kiss the feet of the Jumpgate devs and serve as their slave for 15 years if they can make the actual gameplay even a fraction as awesome as FS2. I still play that game on a regular basis, 10 years after release.

    "Kaneda! What...do you see?"

Control likes FREElancer, yes, I will buy it. But but pls make sure the left mouse button of flight control goes to the right mouse button because it much easier to control than left mouse button and left button mouse uses for firing.Earth and Beyond flight controls are the best of all...if jumpgate has these, I will play it otherwise forget it. Also, dun makes mistake that EnB did before like a long long long wasting warp here and there...and many other problems...i cannot list much problems here, later and wait i got banned. I saw rats around.....before.

HAHA these rats have poor investigation no wonder so many death innocent souls all file a complains to me. hahah...........

I have a freelancer when they just debutted but the disc was mysteryly damaged so couldn't play for a long time until able to find a international seller from ebayer UK to deliver it for me to Singapore. And this is my 2nd pc of Freelancer. haha..your CSI sucks and only good in setting pple up and ruin their life! HA! pls dun try to be outsmart to answer whereever i go especially after my quene. haha

The thing is that Feeelancer was going to be alot larger and more complex than it was! i would be bold enough to say it was going to be damn near an MMO in space..

The flight was going to be handled by that computer thingy,i dont remember the name of it ,but the whole game changed when our friends at Microsoft bought out Digital Anvil they stripped it down and pushed it out.

So ya Freelancer was a pretty good game all in all but i waited like 3 years for it and after reading so many great things about it and what actually was released as a game i never felt a strong bond to it.. the whole using the mouse thing was Microsofts Idea......

As for now if your a BSG fan and are looking for a twitch space combat thing might as well get some practice wth this :)  http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/index.html

I played Freelancer quite a bit.  Even got some mod that expanded it's universe and added quite a large ammount of new systems you could fly to and what not.  Newer ships, more weapons, more resources to haul.  My friends and I decided to play it together and stuck with it for a good month or so.  I however also enjoyed Freespace 2.  I think out of all the space sim games I enjoyed that one the most.  It was more complex then Freelancer and offered more things to do while flying through space and fighting.  It had a greater range of missles, you could adjust the power settings to either the shields, weapons, or engine so that you could withstand weapons fire better or fly faster or hit harder, it was great.  One of the missions I remember was  having to fly cloaked by the giant ship and scaning it's weapons, it brings back great memories.

Freelancer to me was somewhat lean when it came to substance.  It had a great base full of potential and I just wish someone added a bit more to it.  A bit more complexity would be great

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

I still play Freelancer sometimes on a modded server with a Battlestar Galactica theme (ships, galaxies, factions etc.) i really enjoy this ^^.

Freespace... what about SUBspace and Contiuum, those were the days! :)

It sure looks that way from the information out there, so I hope so. NetDevil will hit the nail on the head if they produce a MMO that captures the feel of the classic Wing Commander series, especially the first Wing Commander Privateer game. Though it looks like JumpGate Evolution got some competition, not from Eve, but another Space MMO that's very much got it's inspiration from the Wing Commander and Freelancer games that's nearing closed beta. Though I keep forgetting the name! Grrrr. An intro video introduced the game at this years E3. Somebody here bound to have heard of it, if so feel free to refresh my memory :)

It's the Discovery mod that you're referring to.

    http://www.discoveryfl.com/html/features.html

It has both single player and multi player options and the npc AI seems much improved, either that or I've got alot worse.

Jumpgate Classic already has the mouse controls.  I assume Jumpgate Evolution will just reuse that system since people definitely fly with the mouse controls in JGC.  In general I believe aiming your guns is considered somewhat easier with the mouse but flight control is better with a stick.

Jumpgate classic has old graphics sure, but you get 14 days completely free on the trial and its easy to get to an ok fighter in that time.  You don't even need to give them billing info and the download is quite quite small.  Plus you can play offline or online in the simulator and try out every single ship and every single configuration you want.

You want to know what its like?  try it out NetDevil has made it very easy.

Your controls are pretty decent IMO however the real physics feel is definitely different from say Tie Fighter games.  You can definitely get used to it and its fun, but your dogfighting style will change ALOT.

There is absolutely no way any former X-wing or freelancer players can say much about the newtonian flying style without trying it.  They may like it alot better, in some ways its less restrictive since you canfire one way while moving a different way.
