We were just informed today of a nice online community that is devoted to the disabled gamer. They cover the basics - forums, news, polls, links, etc. However, their main goal is providing a resource for those that may use special gear to enjoy online games. Here is a few words from one of the founders:
I would like to welcome everyone to the site. Ioo and I are best friends of 15 plus years and we have the similar goal of creating a meeting place for people who play mmorpg's and whom just happen to also have some sort of ability limitations. We would like to see one central source for disabled gamers to be able to meet and discuss all aspects of gaming online. It is our hope that by coming together, we can then impress upon game developers that it is in their best interest to make games more user friendly to those of us that cant play the games like a totally able bodied person can.
We want to create an open community of support for those gamers who may or may not feel comfortable telling the general population in a mmorpg that they play in a different way because of a limitation with their body. Anyone is welcome to create a persona on these boards that is independent of the character name you play in a game. No one has to know who you are in a game if you choose to not disclose that. We want everyone to talk freely here without fear of discrimination or being made fun of. Anyone who engages in that behavior will be removed most swiftly from this site.
Lastly, we would like to become a source of information about games and computer equipment. We want to discuss which games are more friendly to people with disabilities and which games are a nightmare to play if you arent 100% able bodied. We would like to get your thoughts and ideas on what equipment you have found useful and what equipment didnt help you.
The bottom line is this. We want to foster a community where we as disabled gamers can meet with one another for support and exchange ideas without fear. We will respect one another even if we disagree. Hopefully we can make some new friends here as well as exchange some useful information with one another. If you play with a disability you are not alone. There are many of us out there. I have been playing with a disability for 5 years now. If you should ever need help or support for anything game related or not, please dont hesitate to post or e-mail me personally. |
