Thoughts on new gaming system please

Hello.  I am thinking of getting a new computer, mainly for gaming, word processing and web surfing, etc.  I would appreciate some feedback on what I am thinking of putting together since I am by no means a computer expert.  Would this system be overkill to run most games maxed out?  Is there anything I can swap out to save money and still get good performance?  Anyways, here is what I am thinking about:

PROCESSOR Intel® Core™2 Quad-Core Processor Q9550 at 2.83GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 12M Cache

POWER Cooler Master Real Power Pro nVidia-SLI Certified 1000Watt Power Supply

MB CORE LOGIC MSI X48 Platinum Intel X48 DDR3 w/1600MHz FSB & Gen 2 Crossfire

MEMORY 4GB Corsair TWIN3X2048-1333C9 CL9 X 2 DDR3 1333MHz Memory (4 X 1024MB)

VIDEO CARD CROSSFIRE SLOT 1 ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB DDR3 @625MHz w/PCI Express, DVI and TV Out

VIDEO CARD CROSSFIRE SLOT 2 ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB DDR3 @625MHz w/PCI Express, DVI and TV Out

Yeah, thats overkill and you can save quite a bit of money.

Here are some money saving suggestions:

    Processor - E8400 or Q6600

    Power Supply - Corsair 750TX

Motherboard - Abit X38 Quad GT

    Memory - OCZ DDR2 800 2x2gb

Operating System - Vista Home Premium 64-bit (XP 64-bit is not very good, if you are going 64-bit, Vista is the way to go).

I'd also probably go with just one 4870 as opposed to two 4850s. You can always upgrade later if you feel the need to. DDR3 memory still isn't worth it for the price, so I suggested an x38 board.

And yes, that power supply is more than powerful enough for two 4870s.

    --------------------------------
Desktop - AMD 8450 Tri Core, 3 gigs of DDR2 800 RAM, ATI HD 3200 Graphics, Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Laptop (Dell Latitude E6400) - Intel P8400, 2 GIGs of RAM, Intel X4500, Windows XP Professional

You might want to change to an AMD processor and motherboard. They're cheaper and better, but they do run hotter (the processor I mean). The computer I'm gonna be building will have an MSI K9A2 Platinum Motherboard, with an AMD X2 6400+ 3.2GHz

xp 64 bit is a extremly buggy and craptastic . ALSO, WHY THE HELL ARE YOU GONNA BUILD A KICK ASS SYSTEM AND NOT BE ABLE TO USE DX10 ITS LIKE SHOOTING YOURSELF IN THE FOOT, GET VISTA 64!

Anyway im not exactly knowing what the hell you plan on doing with a system like this because it can kill kittens with ease and wll prob run every game cept maybe crysis on super ultra high.

And to my above poster, while i do love AMD, Intel takes the cake on the super high end (the way this guy is going) as far as Mid range, AMD wins for money vs power.

Also , your going to build this monster and just get a 4850, I suggest holding off for the 4870 x2 rather then buy two 4850 and when you are done and it gets a little slow, buy another and crossfire. Make sure you got atleast like 8 gigs of ram for that cross fire :)

I would agree with going a little bit lower, plus then if ya do that, you can get a gaming keyboard and mouse and such (i suggest the merc for a keyboard)

Also when asking others about what to get we need 2 questiones answers, what the hell are you doing with it or what do you want to acomplish and price range.

vista 64 for sure and honestly there is no point to going quad core with it (spend $ elsewhere)...  the odds of actually using all 4 cores at any point in the near future (2-3 years) is so remote its retarded. there ARE possibilities of course...but i cant imagine rendering , encoding a video, burning a dvd, whilst playing a game...even if you did do it...i would really have to question your sanity.

side note i dont know if you chose asus drives (X2?) for any reason besides price but they are really not by any stretch the best out there. and light scribe is useless junk they do to make things look appealing (the media to use with it is dumb expensive compared to regular disks, and it doesnt look great either)

You're about 2 years behind the powercurve there.

Anyway, you could easily substitute a P45 board for the x38 or x48 and get almost identical performance, plus you'd be saving about 100-150 dollars.

and Why two optical drives? I see no need for more than one.

edit: p.s. Gamefreek, you know nothing about computers, please refrain from offering advice. We spent a solid week or two and about 30 different threads trying to help you with yours. It is obvious you know next to nothing. Please do us all a favor and do not offer your opinions to people who may mistake you for someone who knows what they are talking about. It would be a shame for someone to drop hundreds of dollars on parts that you advised them to buy.

Thank you guys for the advice so far.  If I wanted to save a bit of money on the processor, which one would I be better off with?

     Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8500 at 3.16GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 6M Cache or a Core 2 Quad Q9450 at 2.6GHz?

Is there any real difference between the E8500 and the E8400?

seriously if you want to save $ on the cessor go amd (not to agree with someone who knows nothing or anything)...otherwise just goto newegg...and compare those 2 cessors.

the main reason i personally dont like intel is ...well it seems you are always paying 50$ more than what its worth just because it IS an intel cessor. things running hotter is not a big deal..i mean anyone who knows anything about building a sys generally scraps the heatsink/fan that come with it and uses something better anyways.
