Will we have Diablo 3 support on MMORPG.com?

NetzokoNetzoko Member Posts: 1,271

I know, I know... here come the genre police to smack my wrist and inform me that OMfG DaTs Not an MMO.

Well I say so what. Who says there's a single, god favored definition of an MMORPG? It doesn't matter. If a game is massively multiplayer where you play the role of a character, it's admitted in my book. Hell, even today people still feel the need to post in Guild Wars threads that, "Lul, noob. GW AinT no MMO, I'm the genre pulice!" Another victim of this lobotomy needing logic is HellGate London. The point is that it doesn't hurt to promote a game that this niche group will undoubtably like. I'll wager that the vast majority of readers here love the Diablo series, because it draws a similar crowd.

I leave with this, don't make me point to the hundreds of games listed here that could easily be debated on whether or not they are true MMOs, because it doesn't matter. If a widely played / looked-forward-to game that has MMO quailties comes along, I say support it.

DAts not an MMO. Almost fogot, OMFG!

"Massive" generally means more players on the server at the same time than the typical FPS, that is more than 128 players on the same server, playing the same game,  at the same time.

If D3 will support more than 128 players, then it's massive, otherwise it's not.

    Uhhg, here we go.

If the set in stone rule is that 128 players have to be in one place, then lets kick out most MMOs because I rarely see that many people in one place. Battlenet usually has 50k+ online for Diablo 2, all those players are accessible for play. You can't just set numbers and make rules for a genre, which is the entire point of my thread. If it's close to an MMO, it shouldn't be shunned by this website.

MMORPG , as the definition has always been, is a massive seamless world where thousands of players can interact at once. That is why I barely consider AoC to be an MMO, and why I don't consider GU an MMO. The games that created the genre, Ultima Online, EQ, DAoC, were nothing like the last two games I listed. That's why they need a sub genre.

As for Diablo... its not an MMO. /end

No they will not have Diablo III on MMORPG due to the fact it does not meet the requirements to be added to the site.

    See here: http://mmorpg.com/faq.cfm/showFaq/4

Same reason Diablo I or II is not here.

128 players or more on the same server, playing the same game, at the same time, not necessarily in "one place". It's ok if they are in different zones, but on the same server.

Being on battlenet isn't playing the game on the same server at the same time.

The number is 128, because it's what sets apart online games like first person shooters, which can support up to 128 players, and massive online games, which can support more than 128 players.

An MMORPG is a game in which there is a single sever that a character plays on with other characters. This server is run, and moderated, by the company producing the game.

The Diablo series does not fall under this because the servers are run from an individuals computer - not one massive server that everybody connects to.

Also, you can only have a total of 8 - 16 players (Depending on D3's arcitecture) playing on a player hosted server at once. MMO's have much much more than 16 players playing on a server at any given time.

Thus, D3 will not be included in the MMORPG genre.

    OMfG DaTs Not an MMO.

But that's the thing.  MMORPG.com has a definition in place.  They Can "just set numbers and make rules for a genre" since it is their website.  That is the whole point.
