ATI; New series anytime soon?

Gamefreek333Gamefreek333 Member Posts: 166

I'm becoming very fond with ATI's graphics cards, and I know their latest series is the HD 48xx series (Or I could be wrong), and I wanted to know if anyone knew if they were gonna be releasing a new series anytime soon? I would love to see a similar card to the HD 4850, but cooler (temperature). Are there any other ATI cards that are just as good as the HD 4850, but possibly for cheaper? Thanks guys!

Far as i know the 48XX's are only a Month or 2 old.. In 4-6 Months the X-2 should be out but im not sure

You can solve the temperature problem by manually setting the fan speed.

And you want something with as much performance as the 4850 for cheaper?!?!? It is probably the best value card you can get at the moment.

We won't see a new series for awhile.

You will have to check the price, but I've read on other forums that the HD3870 X2 is a bit faster than the 4850. Of course, you'll be missing out on some new technology that the 4850 brings to the table, but you may get 5 to 10 more FPS.

That said, you can get the 4850 for like $175, if not cheaper if you dig around.  You will probably need to wait two or three months if you want to see the price drop considerably lower.

    Good luck.

edit:  Like someone else mentioned, the high temperature can be fixed with a quick edit to your profile's XML file.

It's a yes and no. The ATI 3000 series has a problem with AA, the second it's turned on performance drops like a rock. Also the 4850 tends to do better at resolutions of 1680x1050 or higher, with AA turned up, most of the time the 4850 will have higher performance than the 3870x2.

And yea there is no word on a new series coming out soon. The only thing new will be from Nvidia coming out later this year.

If they built the game around ATI's videocard architecture instead of nVidia's architecture, then the HD2xxx, 3xxx, and 4xxx would simply be amazing.  It can do things like process vertex rendering 3 times as fast as nvidia, as well as tesselate and use advanced rendering/lighting effects.  However, this would be a major shift in how games are made.  Going from Heavy Texture work to Heavy Poly work.

That said, we won't see the next generation from ATI until next year.  The only things coming up are the HD4870x2, and the HD4870 Black Editions.  Hopefully until then they will be making crossfireX work on more games and increase its developers network.  The biggest hurdle for ATI is the lack of developer support it offers compared to nVidia.  Right now the HD4850 is the best value for the money.  You can't get anything cheaper that can outperform it, or even come close.
