Veteran Seeking new MMORPG

benbizzbenbizz Member Posts: 43

I've played many MANY MMORPGs and I can't seem to find one that sticks anymore lol. I like a good community oriented game with PvP, also action oriented is a big plus! I do enjoy a game with beautiful graphics though it is not a huge priority. I'm open to any suggestions really. Also, I don't mind having to pay monthly fees. I'll list my computer specs in case anyone has any questions on what I can handle.

OS: Windows Vista 32bit

Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX

Processor: E6600 Duo Core Processor running at 2.40ghz clock speed

RAM: 4 gigs

Sound Card: Creative XFI Fatal1ty

I have Call of Duty 4 its a pretty good FPS game, I've tried EVE, it didn't really hook me much at all.

Also I'm looking for an MMORPG not an FPS, thanks for the suggestions anyway rarraf.

2 games with good PvP and pretty hardcore communitys. DAoC, and Pirates of the Burning sea. Both have great pvp and good communitys, DAoC is old though (2001 or 2004, cant remember) and POTBS was released January this year, it has great graphics. I can get you a trial key for POTBS, and you can download a trial for DAoC

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

I'm like you, without all the MMO experience.

I played SWG (pre-CU) and GW, Conan and a few others.  I keep going back to SWG.  I think it's the sandbox aspect and the community that keeps me coming back.

SWG  is a game where you can do a HUGE amount of stuff - complex craft, complex creature creation etc., missions, collections, explorations, and PvP is good too - that's all i did for a long while.  You can feel alone in the world or you can sit in a cantina and people watch.  The populations are pretty low on most servers, but the people playing are people who have been there the whole time and will be there a while.  So if you make friends you can bet they will be around a while.

The only prob is the games history (game changes) ticked off so many players it created an exiled community that us really strong.  Guess they got their feelings hurt pretty bad when the game changed.

    Anyway, good luck.

I like Age of Conan because of its combat system.  No auto attack and the further I get into the game the more I like the set up.  At first I had my complaints but now at level 51 I find that the puzzle of the game is starting to come together.  PVP is the majority of the focus with sieges on other guild's cities.  If I had a buddy key to give I'd give it.  I've tried a lot of the games listed to our left and the only one that has peaked my interest is AoC after 2 years of warcraft.  The game should run on ur system no problem.  I have a very similar box to you and I'm running pretty much maxed settings with the occasional issue depending on the zone/instance.

Thank you all for your suggestions I'll definantly check out some of those games. I played AoC and the one thing that turned me off of it was how broken it was. The game was not ready to be released imho and it turned me off because of that. A lot of features that were really pulling me in are going to be added down the road so I might play again once they add those features.

You may also enjoy Lineage 2. You wanted a PvP oriented game and I can't believe of all the games listed you haven't tried it. Even after 4 years L2 still has a very good looking world. It also has a very good community once you get yourself into clans and the politics on this game.

I wouldn't have recommended it if the changes in the new expansion Gracia in a months time wasn't changing everything for the better.

I'm surprised that you haven't played LOTRO at all. I'd give it a shot and try the trial period - nothing to lose by doing it.

Why most recommendations are about P2P games and even some of them have no real PvP, if the guy want PvP and F2P game?

Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

Honesly most f2p games end up being very expensive if you want to play them to their full extent. And most have wayy to much grinding in them.

I play lotro has good graphics, but if you like bling bling gear that shines in 75 different colors and hardcore pvp its definitly not for you.

I'm not a no life that sits in front of his computer all day long, I'm an intern that sits in front of his computer all day long.

The game doesn't have to be F2P. Also I've seen a lot of Lineage 2 but never really gave it a shot, maybe i'll check out the trial. I never tried LOTRO because it had too much of a WoW look to it and that never really appealed to me being as I am bored of WoW.

What about giving Fury a try.  If I were more into PVP this would be the game I would be playing.  Great graphics and a lot of fun.  I like questing more than pvp so its why i didn't stick with it.

As for AoC, it actually isn't as broke as you may think anymore.  things feel good, the game has improved greatly since late May from a performance view and they are adding a lot of content.  The PVP nature of siege warfare is about to be fixed.  I play on a PVE server so when the guild wars start at least I can select when i want to fight, otherwise i'm questing away.  Huge content to be added soon for 55+ (think today but can't remember).

I have tried Fury lol, I just forgot to add it to the list. Hmm maybe I'll activate AoC again today. Tell me, did they ever fix the pets in the game, I remember my demonologist hitting pretty hard when my pet was hitting 5's. Also the pet would never keep up with me, so I'd be fighting while my pet was trying to catch up to me...

First toon i rolled was a demonologist.  The pet isnt' meant to hold aggro off of you apparently.  Its meant to be a buff provider.  I'm not an expert really in this area cause I only got her to level 14 and switched to a guardian class.  My guardian is level 51 now, I'm on the set server, name is Melwe, and I'm in a decent guild called Vita Primoris.  I'm more casual than the others, most of them are either 80 already or in the mid to high 70s.  We are working on upgrading our city pretty hard.  They do intend on doing pvp once the city is properly protected.

As for the different classes out there, I have tried:

    Soldier: Guardian class

    Priest: Priest of Mitra

    Rogue: Assassin and Barbarian

    Mage: Demonologist

I like the Assassin and Guardian the best.  I like doing combos.  The game does take time to pull together.  I'm really enjoying it right now.

Yeah, I rolled an Assassin, don't remember which type, and then a Demonologist. I was just shocked to see that they didn't do any damage at all. I wasn't worried so much with having a pet as an aggro holding as I was having a pet as a support DPS. If they were going to make the demons purely for buffs then they should have just made buff spells because honestly I'd rather not deal with a pet if they are just going to follow me around and look pretty. I hope the pet's damage does get buffed though some time in the future. I do enjoy the Demonologist for what its worth sans the pet.

Take from the AoC Forums Demonologist FAQ:

You mentioned pets, is it like WoW?

Actually a bit. Like that little imp in WoW giving your team a health boost, the same holds true. Every 10 levels or so you get a new pet. Each pet has a "buff" to it that helps the team. They come in the following order:

    1. Mana Buff

    2. Health Buff

    3. Mana, Health, Stam regen (the most useful)

    4. Reflect damage shield (excellent when combined with Conflag specs)for melee, ranged and magic attacks

    5. Bonus damage of 1% magic and melee (Also is armored in appearance)

The pets all look the same each level except level 70. You are able to shrink them so they aren't blocking your vision from a wing coming into your camera angle when in caves or tight locations.

I see some with a female demon and some male, what is the difference?

That difference is the sex of the Demonologist. Males get the Succubus (Female demon) and Females get the Incubus (Male demon).

The Incubus looks pretty cool, with that big sword though.

Anyway I can summon the other Demon?

Yes. Thanks to an update, you can cast Forced Summoning and it will bring forth a demon that is the opposite sex of your original demon.

Are pets useful beyond the buffs?

My opinion? No. Pets do not hold agro, unless you use Planar Shift, then if you haven't nuked the target too hard, the target your pet is attacking may attack the pet for about 7 seconds. Very situational and may or may not work. They also don't do much damage. If you told your pet to attack a mob 5 levels under it when you were stealthed, your pet might either die, or may take half the damage off the mob after a full minute of combat has transpired. As soon as you come out of stealth that mob will attack you and ignore your pet. ***Note*** Having the pet attacked while stealthed bring you immediate out of stealth, but this is a good demonstration on how the pet is not to be confused for a combat pet.

Why do some Demonologist not bring their pet out?

I can only speak for myself, but I don't see the need for a small buff, and everyone to know what class I am from literally a virtual mile away (AoC is good like that). I play on a PvP server so letting people think I am a ranger (with my xbow out) or casting lightning spells thinking I am a Tempest of Set is fine with me. Surprise is your ally, especially in PvP here. If they don't know what you are, they won't know how to kill you the quickest.

I know you had City of Heroes on your list, but I'd recommend giving it another try. In my opinion it is the best MMO out there so far. Last week was Double xp Weekend. Everyone had a great time earning 2x rewards. The community is by far the best and the devs are cool as ever.

As corrupted says its dry time but he missed Stargate Worlds Earthrise and W.E.L.L of that list

Im killing my time in Lineage 2 whilst waiting for Aion dont have any intrest in WAR I had always avoided Lineage 2 with it being asian developed and experiences on F2P asian games but after experiencing it I wish I had started it on the 16th of November 05 and i wouldnt have spent the last few years trying countless MMO's to replace Pre-NGE SWG.

Graphicly it can still hold its own its fun to play some of the grind is being eliminated in a upcoming publish/patch/chapter the classes are unique and interesting it might not be everyone's cup of tea but if your intrested in trying just drop me a pm with your email and ill sort you a refer a friend key

Sure, I already started my characters on a PvP server, I think it was called Bloodsucker or something to that effect? But if I do jump on a PvE one I'll definitetly check it out.
