Planetside 2, Why did SOE never go for it?

PureChaosPureChaos Member Posts: 839

I dont know about all of you but with Planetside if you ask me it was one of the definete better games i players, it took the elements of a FPS, combined with large areas and alot of variety and the game ran itself, each fight was different due to who you where fighting or the players ect, its like a WAR not like a small area where shit is going down.

Anyway, why do you think SOE never went for this? I personally would love to see planetside 2 take the same ideas and build apon them

    because it wasnt that successful.

  • Sadly Ravanos is right.

SoE had other games that were producing more of an income like EQ1 and SWG so they decided to build on them.  The playerbase for PS has been dwindling so the staff probably gets smaller and smaller.

Take a look at Huxley though, I hear it will be similar.

As the big swingometer starts to move away from the Elf and goblin side towards the sci-fi / futuristic side of the MMO trend I think we will see something very similar to a 'Planetside 2'

I think we are entering a period of sci-fi / alternative MMOs very shortly and a Planetside 2 or similar will be on the cards eventually.

Perhaps in concept but I am nearly 100% sure that SOE will take no part in making it.  Huxley looks promising though.

All eyes will be on EA and it's Battlefield Heroes that will be free to play, but with a micro payment sytem to expand on your character.  If this proves to be a success for EA it could make SOE sit up and take note. The Free to play micro payment system is just what the MMOFPS genre needs.

In my honest opinion SOE are over looking a great potential in Planetside. It was a game ahead of it's time. A game that's yet to be matched in the MMOFPS arena. Not even Huxley will as big and open as Planetside, but instead heavily instanced.

if SOE took Planetside give the graphics engine an upgrade. Redo the battle zones, and bases. Make them look and like battle zones. Tabula Rasa is a good example of a great way to do them. Craters, cracks and wrecks burning etc. Allow player to prone. Add water interaction. Maybe go over the client to make use of multi core CPU's in anyway it can. Have instance areas where players can team up to take on some PVE content to add more to the mix. The time is right for a game like planetside to thrive and be far more popular than when it was first released if it was brought up to date and put on a free to play micro payment system.

Exactly. Despite what trendy naysayers think about SOE, they're smart business people.

Yeah Huxley looks like Battlefield 2142 combined with HGL with payments. I want the giant futuristic world with Water ,trees, desert, snow and such combined with tanks, and flying shit, the whole powering the area thing and all that but for round 2(no underground things though that was lame)

In one of the developer videos for The Agency, the devs stated flat out that they (SOE) believe that the 100 vs 100 realm was the wrong way to go, and that the future of MMOFPS was in smaller battles, in the region of 6 vs 6 or 10 vs 10.

You'll see Planetside 2 sometime after they do a SWG pre-CU server rollback.

Planetside was before it's time. Pc hardware has advanced, and broadband has become common place in homes. Making a game like battlefield 2, but on the scale of PS is now possible. With Hit detection, dynamic battlefields, a PVE element added to some areas. Just take a look at how popular COD4 has become online with it's battles and character development. Add that to the scale of PS and it would be a winner. It can adopt the Free to play approach, but has a micro payment system for add perks to your character. The time is ripe for a MMOFPS like that. Huxley doesnt' seem to be it. Seem far to instanced.

I am not sure why they didn't but god if they ever did do a Planetside2 i would be all over so would thousands of people if not hundreds of thousands.

But when i think of  the next MMOFPS the thing i think of is a Warhammer 40k version.

    Can you imagine that???

Would be simply amazing with all the lore and work thats already been done my gameswork shop

    "sigh"

I would love to go back in time and start PS from launch again. Best gaming days of my life without a doupt.

When it comes to SOE I don't rule anything out. I still play Planetside and with the server merge there are still enough players to not bother making another Planetside. I have no querstion that sometime in the future there will be a Planetside 2 but its just not on the top of their list right now. Soe's new RMT MMO's are priority.

Well lets just hope it happens sooner rather than later.

    God it would be great.

The reasons it wsn't a big hit are many fold, 90% of which could be easily eliminated with a little thought and imagination, attributes that SOE lack in a big way.

    -wrong timing

-unpopular genre (people are now getting sick of fantasy Sci-Fi is due for a comeback)

-Initial problems with internet connections (lack of user broadband back then)

-Lack of funding and focus from the Devs

-No long term strategy for development

    etc

All these things can be overcome easily nowadays, like has been said before it was ahead of its time and if done correctly could be a massive hit.

Make Planetside browser based with ads on a fresh server and it's a sure thing to be popular with micro transactions.

    Talking about SWG much?

What I liked about Planetside was the massive workds, I wouldn't want Planetside to have an RPG gameplay, FPS with platoon/squad strategy is perfect for a FPS game, you can't really get much of that in any other FPS games except Battlefield 2 (which I didn't like). I probably wouldn't have liked Planetside as much if it involved looting and crafting and selling/buying, I just wanted an FPS game to log in and play, and this is coming from a guy that isn't a big FPS fan, only FPS games I ever liked was Planetside, Call of Duty 2, Day of Defeat (Half-Life) and Battlefield 1942 because I'm a WW2 history buff, I used to play Doom and Quake 2 a little back in the 90's.

BTW JustBe, that statement Smedley made in your sig, is so screwed up, I think SOE are the ones that don't know how the online gaming market works.

I think this game was ahead of its time.  Six years ago, nobody knew what a MMOFPS was.  The entire market for MMOGs was pretty small and focused on traditional fantasy RPGs.

PlanetSide is far from perfect, but still the most fun I have ever had in any game (offline and online).  I wonder how many years it will be until fans of this type of game will have multiple MMOFPS titles to choose from.

There is a Warhammer 40k MMO being developed by THQ.  Not much out to look at yet, but if they do it right, will be awesome!
