just readin the reviews for planetside and honestly the ratio from good reviews to bad reviews is 8:1 which is ridiculous for any game... so why isnt it is as popular as it should be?

Planetside is great. It used to be awesome and probably the best teamwork game out there but the lack of end game made many people quit and Planetside lost one of its glory.

I hate planetside. It took me 3 hours to get through tutorials due to horrendus bugs which eventually left me unable to complete most of the tutorials. Once out in actual gameplay, going solo I was instantly sniped and killed in 1 shot by high level players whenever I got close to the fight. I eventually got into a squad and jumped in a tank with a high level player, but we seemed to randomly explode without explanation half of the time, and the other half just be driving to our destination. Granted, this is based on trying the game out about a year ago, but I don't think that it was terribly new then. The bugs were really awful, extraordinarily frustrating, and more than enough to make me quit. Then, when I finally got into combat, I couldn't ever see getting enough kills or experience or whatever to rank up once, since apparently lowbies just get slaughtered.

I quite enjoyed Planetside.
The reason it isn't so popular is because of SOE's bad decision-making, odd imagination, and apathy. They introduced an expansion that completely unbalanced the game (BFRs).
They marketed the expansion as being "combat in an urban environment," but in fact it was just a series of underground caverns with a horrendously confusing web of "ziplines" that you used to travel around.
As the numbers dwindled in the aftermath of the expansion (took them well over a year to get the BFR issue straightened out, and some say it still isn't) they pulled the majority of the development team.
For the next couple of years, the game sat essentially in limbo, with nearly nothing being added. Quite frequently, they would change their certification system, forcing you to have to reselect your certifications, and it sometimes resulted in you no longer being able to use the equipment that you had been previously using.
They did eventually put a dev back on it, that brought us wonders like the overpowered buggy for each nation, as well as the Galaxy Gunship, an idea that had been batted around the forums for a while. Both were designed to appeal to those looking for some kind of alpha class in their vehicles. Both ended up being toned down because they had reintroduced, on a smaller scale, the same imbalance that had accompanied the BFRs.
Despite all that, I would still be playing, but cheating has gotten so rampant that it's killed the fun. You can find any number of these recorded for posterity on Youtube. The recent server merge was long overdue, and it did (seemingly, if not in actuality) help with the population issues.
The game was a blast, but SOE abandoned it to go after their new Vision™ of what an MMOFPS should be, The Agency.
No, don't hate the game. I have fond memories.
Planetside is my most favorite MMO of all time -ever! Played it for like 3.5 years. Loved my time in the game. Eventually to many of my friends left and it got old due to SOE not updating it every once in awhile. You can only kill the same people so many times before even that grows old. ^_^
I agree with DragonShark. I can't tell what is more frustrating, the way SOE acts, or the fact that two of the most fun MMO's I've ever played (SWG and Planetside) were completely destroyed by them. I'd kill for another game that had SWG's old class and economy system. It made your game experience so incredibly versatile and unique (even when trying to be the best of the best) that my experience in games has yet to match it elsewhere.
That makes about as much sense as it ought to make sense which is that it makes sense for it to not make any sense at all.
What ticks me off is when your own empire OS's you because someone thinks it's funny or a good way to clear the que or as last night when someone was trying to make a point by OSing the ants as they filled a drained/just capped base. What point i am unsure unless it was to prove what a dumbass they were. Regardless i am finished with this game.
Back in the day the game was popular and really great but SOE destroid it. Instead of focusing on giving us new content on the existing islands like changing the bases to make each one more unique they added to the land mass with some horrible caverns. Then again they totally ruined the game with horrible looking BFR's which not only do they look shit they were overpowered, the only good thing is cause noone goes in the caverns youc an no logner unlock them to cert for em lol. Other things Ii hate about Planetsdie are all the guns and vehicles stuff they added because not only does it all look very cheap, the game didn't need new weapons or vehicle addons, it was fine how it was so i think they ruined that side to it aswel.
The main reasonw hy it will never do well now though is because it's a FPS and it looks horribly dated so people wont be attracted to it anymore. The art style of the game is SOE's usual crapfest which puts people off too, the factions look far too fisherprice.
Also with low populations the battles arn't fun like they used to be with several conts locked at once. The battles back in 2003 were soooo intense and now if you go itno it they just feel rather empty.

Talking about SWG much?
Basically the content added was for a different play style and more like the current fps's. This also added BFR's which where overpowered in the rest of the game. They thought this would bring more players into the game but it was not the same game play style and ended up causing problems for the pop they did have. Then after this blunder the game was plagued with bugs that where not addressed in a timely manor and no new content.
Basically they hoped that they could lure players who played fps's into the game. They ended up losing players they did have.
Planetside is a great game and the posts before me all agree on that. It's just a classic case of the developer fumbling up and making a mess of things, then taking months, if not years, to fix the problems and the imbalances (introduced with BFR's). Add to the fact that for the past two years they've had nothing but a one man maintenance/dev team on PS ... well, we haven't seen new content in a while, only few improvements, and so on. They've just begun in recent months to put a little more effort into it, afaict, but it's waaaaay too little and much, much too late.
I'd love to play Planetside again but the population count on Werner (EU server) is just abysmal. 2v2 in a game which used to have 50v50 and more? No thanks.
[edit] If they could start a massive PR storm, put out a new expansion, put a real dev team on the game and overall give the game and the situation surrounding the game a brand new image ... the game would be so much more successful. At this point, everybody knows it's pretty much dead and most people wouldn't touch it with a 50 foot stick. They should've dropped SWG like a stone after CU/NGE and put all that money into PS, imo.
well all the servers are merged now i think so thats not a problem really anymore.
well all the servers are merged now i think so thats not a problem really anymore.
With all due respect, I decided on trying Werner one night recently it was 33%TR 66% VS 0%NC I created a NC The pop was 30% TR 60%VS 10% NC..... It is bad on Werner.
I love the game. The gameplay is unique. The only and true MMO with FPS action. The graphics are just right: you get a smooth gameplay and giganteous areas to look.
Theres always action, interesting action, somewhere.
Is a game I return somethimes, play a few weeks, and quit again.
I don't hate Planetside. But I don't love it to death either. It's definitely a great game and had a lot of high points, but also some low points.
Whenever I was able to get into some really, really large battles is when the game truly shined. But leave it to SoE to ruin a good thing, like always.

Planetside was awesome when it first came out. It's pretty much like halo but waaaay better. Notice I said Halo, not Halo 3 lol. And Planetside came out back in what? 2002? 2003? It was way ahead of it's time. I paid for it for about 2 years and then they released BFR's (Big Friggin Robots) and I think it ruined the game. It no longer has the same feel as it did before.
I was in a good Outfit with lots of great people who were very smart about how to play the game. It's definitely a tactical game. I miss the days of seeing hundreds of people battling for a base for hours. Gawd that was addicting and adrenaline rush. There are 3 empires fighting for planets and one thing that is fun to do is jump in a bomber with someone and find a base that has two empires fighting that are not your own and just bomb the heck out of that base. You get good XP lol
They need to just redo the game. There's really no other game like it...
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a new PS or UO or something but its really stupid on the companies part. They have people paying month after month, even if the numbers are low. You make PS2 and their numbers for PS go to next to nothing if its good. It just makes sense to make a completely different game that doesn't cannibilize your market share.
I used to LOVE Planetside, excellent teamwork game, but like many others said, BFRs ended it and is having a harsh recovery. I'd be surprised if there's even 500 people still playing today, number of continents and bases are too large to play in such ghost towns now, even Emerald looked quiet last time I played.
This is the one game that needs to be bought from SOE and given to the right hands. It still has much potential even after all these years and lack of new age graphics. All it needs is a company to remodel the game engine and clean up the ingame mechanics and PERHAPS add hitboxes. Not having hitboxes always kind of annoyed me. You could hit a guy in the foot, leg, waist, chest, head and you'll do the same damage. BFR (Battle Frame Robotics) **MECH WARRIORS** Really destroyed the small portion that was left of the infantry part of the game. Every year I resub at least once just to take a peak at what's going on, although I haven't been back since the merger I do know SoE has 2 brave DEV's working on the planetside team and if they could get transfered to the right company with the right budget for the game, they could make a very decent re-launch. But as it stands now I did play the game since release and played it until end of 06. Like many stated here. After you get to know your enemy personally after every fight and you know the skill level of certain players it does get very repetative.

these companies need to come to mmorpg and start reading about what people really want lol
I mean no offense sir, but your problems stem from not understanding the game mechanics. You dont go solo in Planetside, you join a squad. Secondly you dont run around in the open, just like the real thing, if you dont tuck and cover, someones going to shoot you. And last but not least, your friend driving the tank really isnt an expert, or hed have told you that most likely the reason you both blew up are land mines. A good tank driver knows to avoid roads, not to get too close too bases and buildings and when you hit a mine, you stop, swing around, and reverse direction so you dont hit more. Sure sometimes its unavoidable, thats just how it plays.
However Id hate to see you disrespect a game citing flaws when really the only problem is that you were new and didnt understand how to play the game.

i miss the good old days of planetside
For me I never thought it was worth the money. I would play it for a month on a trial and be bored with it before it ended. There was never a reason why I should actually defend a base or capture one really. I just ran around and killed people. At least in wwiionline you can win the war. (but honestly i did the same thing there, if its not "mine" i dont care)
I would love for a planetside 2, but without an economy or being able to own/modify bases I prob would never subscribe to that either. Even if it was f2p I would still prob get bored after a month then come back six months later and repeat.
I also hated the core combat expansion, that should be a seperate game.
Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7
In the beginning, I used to be so good, that I could get crazy XP without even joining a squad. I remember taking out whole groups of infantry as an infantry myself. Lots of people were just bad at FPS games in the early months of this game, and I was highly experienced from other FPS games.
I remember that floating tank where you can strafe left and right, and the lavender colored laser it fired. Oh man, when I got into the gunnery position on that thing, watch out. Whenever I hit something, it made sort of a flower design. I was shooting down planes with that thing, from far away. The times I was a gunner in that tank were some of the greatest memories in an FPS I've ever had.
I never lasted up to the expansion, so I never experienced the game-breaking stuff. Still, this game was just incredible before the expansion. I have never played a game with battles as amazing as this one. I hope another developer makes a game that is like this one some day.
I think I'll come back and check it out. Can I still install from the original installation disks, or do I have to download the client all over again?
Played it, loved it, and then left when they allowed a player to have a character of all three armies on the same server. I understood that limiting that was a safegaurd to protect balance. (After all, people online seem to want to win more then playing, so the biggest army would just keep getting bigger otherwise.) As if to prove my point the NEXT DAY after they began allowing it, the map was 60 % Vanue, and roughly 20% of either of the other armies. That was the day I quit.
If I had stayed, it wouldnt have been more then a few months more, since they upped the prince to $15 a month. Im sorry, but an old game should NOT go up in price.
Great game, pathetic company, and I cant wait for someone to make a game to compete (read trounce by being run right) for this kind of MMO game.
Lol! Sniped by a high level player... I hate to cut it to ya, but you can make an out-of-the-box sniper.
I just returned after 4 years. I hope it is still fun on Werner, if not... I'll head over to Emerald. I used to be a Vanu infantry woman but since I never really liked the Vanu infantry weapons, I might try out the Terrans again.
I heard that this game is basically about vehicles now. Shame because I used to love defending/storming bases.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
I still play it. The pop merge did great things, however, you should not, repeat NOT create a char on Werner. Most european people (Me including) are playing on the US server, Gemini. The pop there is great.
And frankly, if you think PS sucks because you got killed a couple of times, I guess that FPS games arent your style.
