Wizard*101* CardBased MMO

Wizard101 - It's currently in open beta go to www.wizard101.com to sign up.  It's a wizard based MMO and it's combat system is card and turn based.  The art is very fanciful and enticing.  I recommend this to anyone who's into TCG's or who's looking for a more relaxed MMO to enjoy.

I tried atlantica online and I think this game is a whole lot better, it's a lot more pleasing, relaxed, and smooth.

Once again, you can try it out and www.wizard101.com, sign up and then you can download the client.  The download should take less than two minutes because the rest of the game is downloaded in the background as you play, really cool feature.

This was their big "secret mmo" that was going to take the world by storm.

    I've seen everything now.

I don't recall anything being said about it 'taking the world by storm'.  Even if it was secret, what's the big deal? DO companies have to disclose everything that they are working on? That's their decision.

yeah this game is pretty awesome. now i dont know about anyone else who is in TCGs, but this is liek a dream come true...except that its made for 10-14 year olds. still its extremely addicting, more so than most mmos ive played.

The game is cool, and unique. Feels like Yugioh though. I couldnt really get into it because i didnt feel like i had enough control over mycharacter... especially since i couldnt actually choose my own name.

But i think a lot of kids will get into it. It is fun and easy.

Six post to your credit, all in the same day, and five are about this game with one being a necro-post.  Also in the one that was not about this game you claimed to be a high school student hoping to get into a good university despite your profile saying you're 23 years old and ending that post with classic ad-man language that almost no high school kid out there would ever use.

    Uh-huh.

Or perhaps I am what I say I am and I didn't give my actual birthdate when I signed up because I didn't want the site to have that information.  And why advertise the game? because I really like it and thing that there are others on this site who will to.

Agree with OP, and don't worry about these cynical naysayers.  They'll crawl back to any good game in secrecy and in no time like they always do.  This game looks pretty simple on the outside but has some depth to its gameplay.  It's not as deep as Atlantica, but still fairly entertaining as there are tons of quests, at least in lower levels.  My wife is having a blast good time playing it.

You can jump into any battle with strangers or friends alike anytime, without going through LFG spam routine like in other MMO's.  No worry about ganking or ks from players.  One downside is you can't chat with others who aren't in close vicinity.  There is no general chat, and that restricts social interaction.  Other than that, it's a nice game for those fans of Harry Potter series.

in all honesty id think that harry potter or yu gi oh, or magic for that matter, would have more problems with it than disney would.

  • scooby32scooby32 Member UncommonPosts: 4

Disney would complain about the name chooser

J.K Rowling wouldn't complain since its just a wizard game. There is many other wizard games.

    Yu-gi-oh wouldnt complain

    Magic the gathering wouldn't complain

    Over-all disney would be pissed.

Note the bit about "My wife is having a blast good time playing it."

This game could do well because it will appeal to a large market of 'casual' gamers who like games without too much pressure?

FYI - The game is live now and Gyrus has written a nice little review in The Pub. I have some (minor) quibbles with the game, but I think it's a lot of fun and highly recommend you check it out. My son LOVES it.  Actually, my entire family (5 of us, male and femaie, young and not-as-young ) loves it.  No other game has ever appealed to my entire family.  Ever.

    Thanks!

Yeah - this game has wide appeal I think.

FWIW I have a couple of small quibbles and concerns too but I also think this game is one to watch.

MMORPG.com still don't have it on the game list though :?

Wizard101 is a mix of turn based card game and mmog. Very much solo able you do not have to playing with anyone if you do not want too. It is aimed at the youth market but it's still alot of simple basic fun.  Does have a list of approved words for kids. That can be turn off by parents or if you are a parents you can turn it off for yourself and use open fitered chat.  Cost 15 USD per month and game money is for sale too. That gets you 3 slots so 3 diffrent ppl could play on the same computer.

Hmm ....i tried this game as i do try a lot of games out there.

first of all i would have to say this game shows some decent effort. It is more so geared towards the teenagers, but to just goof around and relax it's ok for older players.

The games biggest flaw i guess is that it is VERY linear, things open up only as you do quests or level up.

Unlike WOW who claimed to make there cheap graphics because of art design[i don't buy it]this game actually does have a cartoon like art design.

You can as a few said already pretty much solo everything, but grouping is kind of neat.Well even if not really in a group ,you can kind of jump right into any battle [if there is room] and sort of force yourself into the battle[group].Usually what happens when another player jumps in,another mob will usually jump in as well, however i found that on a whole ,having more players makes it easier.

I actually tend to like card based games, this one adds some graphics to it,witch is nice.

The game over all does not have much content,it is pretty much a quest based/level up type game.I do give it credit however as i think they did a good job, based on the format and ideas they went with.

I am not really sure how you could rank this as a F2P or a P2P game.It sort of has the feel of a game you would buy for a single player, put it in your nintendo console and go nuts for weeks.Having this game as a MMORPG/card base game is tricky. If ever there was a game that should be F2P/item shop this is it.The reason being is that there is not enough content to outright ask for a fee,but it is a good enough game to ask for some sort of payments, aka cash shop.

They give everyone quite a fair shake at understanding the game and dwelving into it,as a free trial. There is a lot of hourly game play there without paying to open up more.

The hardest part would be to rank this game.I would have to know exactly what the Developer was striving for.Just scratching the base aspects of the game i would say they get a 8/10 for what is there. As far as a MMORPG ranked against other top games it of course drops off a lot, maybe a 5/10 is fair, but still not a bad effort by the developer.
