If you think that you will find a good mmorpg to play that does not have a monthly fee it will suck and die, reduced priceing? maybe....but free? NEVER!!
If you ask or expect one to be free you should be pk'd irl

Only way a free mmorpg would be very very good is if the producers and creators were insanely rich and very generous
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
Or maybe they are confident enough that they have a decent product and have a plan to actually have money coming in during a regular basis. ArenaNet|NCSoft is doing just that with Guild Wars. No monthly fee to play but they will be releasing expansions on a regualar basis though. I think they said something like one ever 3 or 4 months which will allow access to new regions of the world, new skills and abilities, new items, new professions, and more. They are calling them new chapters that will be added to the story. Though you don't have to buy them to keep playing but if you do, clearly you will gain more.
Personally I love this approach. For one it puts them in a position that they have to release something and show that its worth buying since they will need that money and have to be up to the challenge to releasing a quality product. If they don't release something good with these expansions will will be worried abut the next one and might not buy or buy in smaller numbers and that might continue.
Many of these games with monthly feels are released uncomplete, their expansions might be uncomplete as well or filled with bugs. Though they still have that monthly fee coming in to support them. Guild Wars won't have that safty net so it will have to do well.
At least that's how I feel to be honest. Others might not feel that way but I'm looking forward to things. Especially since I won't have to pay a monthly fee when I don't have time to play but can just log on when I can and play and I'm sure I'll pick up the expansions if they are worthwhile since I think they also said they would have material for everyone, not just those that are high in level as well. Most expansions are aimed at those high in level mostly, clear example of this is Everquest (though not all the time but lately though).
Well i would say that Guild Wars is a MMORPG and that is going to be free, but you have to but the game in the shops its even says it on there website.
You get what you pay for.....
Guild Wars will suck because it's free. They certainly aren't going to take the massivley multiplayer world seriously if they are thinking of running it like they would battle net.

Guild Wars is not a true MMOG/MMORPG.

Guild Wars may be wird, but it IS a MMOG.
Ya know what MMORPG means?
guildwars is a CORPG, not a MMORPG, quite a diffence, and quite rankly, there are things that a CORPG accomplishes much better than a MMORPG
Edit: one letter typo that made everything cofusing fixed.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
MMORPG, Massively Multi-player online role-playing game.
Do those words describe what GuildWars is?
No. Do those words describe what any supposed MMORPG out there is?
Not that I can think of.
MMOG, Massively Multi-player Online Game.
That does describe Guildwars. And about every other "MMORPG" out there.

Ok, its a CORPG; but its better than EQ and all same crap, isnt it?
I played the E3 test, and it is sweet
Like existing MMOs, Guild Wars is played entirely online in a secure hosted environment. Thousands of players inhabit the same virtual world. Players can meet new friends in gathering places like towns and outposts where they form parties and go questing with them. Unlike many MMOs, when players form a party and embark upon a quest in Guild Wars, they get their own private copy of the area where the quest takes place. This design eliminates some of the frustrating gameplay elements commonly associated with MMOs, such as spawn camping, kill stealing, and lines to complete a quest.
Guild Wars takes place in a large virtual world made up of many different zones, and players can walk from one end of the world to the other. But Guild Wars eliminates much of the tedium of traveling through the world. Players can instantly return to any safe area (town or outpost) that they've previously visited just by clicking on it in the world overview map.
Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-on-guild warfare or the international tournament. But engaging in combat is always the player's choice; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world.
Finally, unlike existing MMOs, all characters in Guild Wars inhabit the same virtual world -- they are not divided onto different servers or shards -- so players can always team up with or compete against any other player in the world.
Much different then a true MMO IMO
Yup, its different, thats why i like it.
Im tired of the same MMOG fromula
Almost every MMORPG has the same formula,
GW may change it, but for good
Played these MMORPG's:
AC1/AC2/AO/DAoC/EQ/ATITD/FFXI/UO
Beta'd: RYL/SWG/E&B
Played these MMORPG's:
AC1/AC2/AO/DAoC/EQ/ATITD/FFXI/UO
Beta'd: RYL/SWG/E&B
GW wont have ads
IMO mmorpgs shouldnt be free, but 13-15 bucks/month????????? WTF!!!!! i know they pay for servers and Customer Service.
IMO MMORPGs should cost less, maybe $7, SOE and NC Soft are burning and dancing with your money by the time you are reading this
Much different then a true MMO/MMORPG/MMOG. No, thats a relative opinion.
Because in my opinion, its alot closer to a true one, then crap like EQ.

Someone soon will break the monthly subs business model and it can't possibly involve 'advertising' we know that for a fact, would love to see someone try tho. Runescape has done well by attracting huge numbers of free players & then adding the paid for servers with good take up - but I don't think that's the model either. One to watch out for....
