I need an MMORPG! Is this game worth it?

Hey everyone! I don't usually post on MMORPG but, I need a new game. World of Warcraft, after 2 years, I finally 100% quit. The game has finally reached noob point. I heard this game was strong on PvE terrible on PvP, I need some experts on this game to tell me if this game requires mindless grinding. Or is it more of a team effort? I just really want to know the basics of this game. I am waiting for Warhammer online open beta, so if anyone knows the release date on that I would appericaite it. Anyways, I've been into World of Warcraft for a long time, is this game at all like it? The graphics look nice but I'm more into game play..I was a big fan of the Elder Scroll games also. So, basically if someone can explain this game's strong points and weak points and of they personally rate it that would be great! ((I don't want some person just saying "OMG THIS GAME ROCKS 10/10!!11!!! YOU SHOULD SO PLAY IT" I actually want reasons. Rating in individual parts of the game would be cool too. I.E

Gameplay: 8/10

PvP 6/10

ETC Thanks for reading.

    depends:

if you like cartoonish graphics like in wow, you will hate lotro..

if you like pvp, you will hate lotro.

if you don't love the lotro lore, you will most likely hate it aswell..

if not, you maby like it..

The graphics looks great, I also love LotR. But is there any PvP at all?

  • alex-corealex-core Member Posts: 114

yes.. there is a big instance.. you can kind of compare it to a big AV like in wow, called Monterplay.

you can eather lvl to lvl10 and make a monster character or lvl a hero to 40 to join.

but as far as the pvp goes there, its more of a learning curve imo, because to kill a monster as a hero, it required 0 skill, because the monsters are extremly underpowered.. even when ranked up.

    And you fight other players?

Is the game itself fun? Or is it extremely repeatitive?

Yes there is PvP and its very different from what you are used to in WoW... nobody can tell you if you will like LotrO or not... try the 14 day trial and make your own opinion..

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Lotro has of alot of content and nice features in my opinion..

the community in lotro is great, its alot different than in wow, in my exsperience.

its very pve minded though, but in this game i´d dare say it actually doesnt matter that much even though im a huge fan of pvp, you can spend alot of time just exploring and filling out your, i cant remember what its called so lets call it the lorebook, where you get all sorts of nice things unlocked for your character for exploring and questing and making emotes....best advice is the same as above poster..

download the trial..but beware that if you are in europe u need to download the eu trial in case you upgrade the game, otherwise you wont be able to play on eu servers :)

Right now you can play for over seven weeks (44 days) for only $10.

Two weeks trial - 14 days

Digital Download - $10  - includes your copy of the game plus another 30 days.

If you purchase the digital download during your trial, the 30 days are added to your remaining trial days, so you do not lose any days.

My son and I just subscribed, on the 2nd day of our trial.  We started play on Sunday the 13th, bought the game on the 15th and my account is good until August 28th (or around there) with the included 30 days.

I have no doubt that just about anyone could get their $10 worth of entertainment in close to two months.  That should also be plenty of time for you to decide if it's for you or not.

    Strong Points

    • Nearly all of the quests are story line based and have a purpose.  Quite often the item you are retrieving may be a document or letter that, if you take the time to do so, you can read and it includes more back story.
    • The dialog with NPCs includes additional details and background.  For example, my son noted a guy that gave a quest to make him a ring.  In another area, a female NPC (same last name) relates a story about her lost ring.
    • It appeals to both PvP and PvE game play. For the pure PvE crowd, there's no forced PvP - you can play the entire game and never enter the Ettermoors.
    • On the other hand, if you enjoy PvE, you can play on either side by either getting a character up to Level 40 (level necessary to enter the PvP area) OR get your first character to level 10 which allows you to enter "Monster Play."
    • A truly inter-dependent crafting system. There is a complex arrangement of resources which results in players needed each other's skills within the crafting system.

I don't think that's right I bought my version of LOTRO as a $9.99us download special from the LOTRO site and still had to buy a month of play for another $14.95us, I just went and checked my account and I have no extra 30days of time, I also checked the site and the offer again , there is no mention of getting any extra time when you buy the $10 price for the game, do you still have a link to the page that makes the offer of $10 for the game and 30days gameplay, I would like to read it, so I can then hav a word with turbine about where my 30 days extra is.
    is this the same page?
    http://www.lotro.com/buynow/anniversary/?utm_content=BUY&utm_source=LOTRO_COM&utm_medium=PROMO&utm_campaign=TURBINE

To the OP, I also like LORTO I think it's a bit like Wow crossed with Guildwars warped up in a LotR by J.r.r.T. theme, not the LotR by P.J. movie, the game has a nice relaxed gameplay feel, there is a form of PvP called Monsterland were the characters are  set choices that start out already at level 50, I've only been playing about two weeks, it is very enjoyable in a group or even solo and the only fun advice I could give is, Stay out of Hobbit business or you will never escape them.

God luck with the search! :)

At the time you put in your key code, you do have to enter a credit card number and choose a payment method.   (For example, it sounds like you chose the single month $14.95 plan)

However, that's just for future payment, after that initial 30 days are up.  If you check your card, I'd bet there was only the single $10 charge thus far.

If I'm not mistaken, there are two new classes to choose from too.

When I did play Lord of the Rings, it was amazingly fun.  I would stand around town (sometimes for hours) playing my massive play list of music with other people.  It was good fun.

Something that a lot of MMORPGs lack these days.  Fun.

It seems that the only diffrence is, I didn't do the trial and just bought mine out right, guess it pays to do the trial first, think I will go and have some words with them about it, thanks for the info.

I got the same deal where  I downloaded the trial and then bought the game for $10 and got 30 days free added to my trial version. Plus I bought 3 more months at $10 each. Good deal.

I would say that LOTRO is way better when you are in a group, and it is easy to group as the community is pretty good. Solo is OK but not nearly as fun. For me the only drawback of the game is that I haven't found a class I really like yet.

The graphics are pretty good and it is a fun game to play, which is the most important thing, eh.

In my experience of LotRO, I found it to be very very kiddie friendly.  If you want a serious MMO that has some real fighting and PvP content then it is not for you.  If you are a casual player who just likes to run around a world and explore with no risk of danger whatsoever then LotRO is right for you.  I don't mean to bash LotRO, it is a good game for those who it is designed for, but don't expect any RvR-PvP hardcore action with big gain as seen in WAR or something.

I guess it just depends on what you are looking for, but as a carebear MMO it is a solid game.  G'luck.

Yea it's not hardcore PvP like WAR. Wait, that game isn't even out yet....well whatever. WAR IS OMG BEST EVA dur....

I'm a little worried that you describe WoW as having reached the noob point since to me that implies that you find that the changes in WoW to make it easier was somehow wrong. I'm not contesting that, I'm worried because the content in Lord of the Rings: Online is VASTLY easier than WoW. Quests have been continously tuned down to make as much as possible as easy as possible and as soloable as possible.

There is a little slightly difficult content left but nothing like WoW.

The game has good PvE but not as many Quests as WoW (not nearly! According to Allakhazam Lord of the Rings: Online has (all included, Crafting, beginner, etc) about 1800 quests compared to WoW's about 6200 quests) so again it depends on what you seek. If you mean monster AI when you focus on PvE it is 100% comparable.

In Lord of the Rings: Online you don't build your character and focus on various aspects as in WoW with Talents and attempting to find Gear supporting that chosen role, in Lord of the Rings: Online you have Deeds and Deeds must be grinded by slaying the same type of monster over and over (at later Deed levels we're talking hundreds of monsters). You can grind away at grey mobs though, they will still count if they are the right type, it is just meant as a time-sink. But all Deeds are available to all members of the Class, you don't really focus or become different, all Guardians of the same level are identical for instance and there is no point in creating more than one of each of the only 7 classes.

My best suggestion is to download the trial and try it out. It is the best MMO on the market if you play perhaps 2 to 6 hours a week, hands down, everybody beat because most of the content is extremely easy, can be soloed and doesn't require much knowledge or interest in game character mechanics. I used to play it a lot as my "Waiting for the Plane to be ready for Boarding game" and for those casual moments there is none better.

I wouldn't listen to the opinion of ANYONE who thinks WoW is complex or difficult.

Lotro is a great game and it has plenty to appeal to all kinds of gamers. Give it a try :)

LOTRO is a PVE based game that have PVP (PVMP) added. If you want a game with a focus on PVP then LOTR probably will not make you happy.

The PVE is very very good. An excellent story line with an over abundunce of available quests make for hours of play. I'm sure you have read about the overall quality of the game and that is all true (the recent server issues withstanding).

The trial is well worth the time invested and should give a good overall feel of the game.

    Hope this helps.
