their plans are pretty crap. The lowest levels are around 450 Emails or about 2 hours of YouTube.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
How would this impact the MMO market? If I'm wrong I'm sure some techie will correct me, but I don't think the bandwidth used between client and server for an MMO is very much at all?
But in and of itself I agree with the idea in principle - people should pay for what they use. A lot depends on how it's implemented of course - plenty of opportunity for bandwidth providers to take the p**s.
Its the recurring use that is the issue though .And how they implement the plan, think of it like making a ton of short, long distance phone calls . How would that effect your phone bill ? Add to that the cost of a normal high speed connection these days . Plus a monthly fee for an mmo , It effects us a lot IMO .

Top it off with the fact, this is just a test bed for future plans . And it hasn't even been picked up by scum corps like comcast yet.
I should have looked up links to the I.P address issues going on as well (could cause a reason to charge customers to offset costs ) .

Soon problem will be gone they gonne test in canada a new system where you get few sites you pay for and when you want more sites you pay extra like cable tv.
I think in few years internet how we know it is nomore goverments and big powercompanys will dictate what you get and what not.
They will follow every step you make on the net.

Whats funny is that its the companies fault for not upgrading there system, its estimated that $206 billion dollars in excess profits and tax deductions were collected to upgrade homes to fiber. So if your paying your 40 dollars for internet youve already over paid to get more internert.
Its also funny that companies try to block towns from laying there own fiber even when telcoms wont.

I'm not suggesting you do anything illegal. By all means buy a cup o coffee. Gives you something to drink while you're killing gnomes....
My point is, (and I realize I did not paint a very sharp picture) that there is always a way to get your online gaming fix. This is not the end of the world....
I myself am a TWC customer. Since I dont download movies I'm not too worried about this. Who knows?Maybe my bill will even go down. (doubtful but I can always dream). If I get charged more because I play onine I will shop for a new ISP. There are several of them out there and they all want my business. I hope TWC realizes this... I have found that in business, pissing off your customers is a bad thing...

My biggest concern is in my area Comcast owns every single line under our city , Basically running a monopoly on our area .We have no other choice . We won't have fiber for a few years.

Basically , i was talking about internet throtling. ISP's that are giving flat rate but hampering downloads. (which creates lag in MMOs)
So throthling or limited bandwith ?
Since MMOs are not taking to much bandwidth (except patching) i would chose limited but good quality internet
i just wonder how much bandwidth a MMO developer uses in day to day operations . Any cost increase to them means possible increases in what we pay.

Most games use less then 20mb per hour per user....voice chat is more
The reason why caps are bad for gamers is because more and more pc games allow you to download the game. With games becoming bigger and bigger it will be a problem. The only reason they even want to add restrictions is because tv and voip reserve too much bandwidth. Eventually you might have to decide is conan beta worth 15 bucks....(1 dollar per gig)

consider the facts: these isps were given millions in tax breaks in the nineties to upgrade the infrastructure..
they spent it. now they claim downloads are choking the bandwidth. ever consider actually upgrading the network like they promised? gating access to the internet is unamerican and criminal. and yes this will impact gaming. need to download a client? pay. need to update windows? pay. need to patch a game? pay.
there is no "internet shortage" just companies trying to extort money.
My 32 player Ghost Recon server used to use 3 GB of bandwidth a day on the weekend.
That used to cost me about £300 a month back in the day. (About £10 a player).
A 32 player Unreal server with it's superior netcode would use about half of this.
Hosted 16 player Unreal servers used to go for about £5 per head per month, (£80 total).
Obviously MMO's send a lot less data per player, but you can pretty much count on each server using the maximum 100 MB pipe available to it when full on the older games. These days of course they may even use the full 1GB pipe.
These games are optimised to get the most players into a server as possible at one time.

No its a cap....so you will pay the same and be limited to "x#" up and down a month. Your bill would only change if you go over the cap. IT WILL NOT GO DOWN only up....
Next they are going to charge more for faster pings.....

Yep , Think of like your cell phone bill . Any usage over the cap charges to you .
The article is from january , but the plan is still ongoing . I saw a report on it just days ago on msnbc and cnn (which made me look up an article on it ). Most analyists believe if the plan works out where being tested , Most ISP's will adopt it.
There is also a worry that unique IP adresses are drying up as well , Basically caused by a lack of foresight back in the 80's .The bummer here is , Companies believe the only way to solve the issue is to spend on research , Causing a hike across the board in internet pricing.

At the moment at least in europe there is a big fight for users and for a flatrate.
As they expect BIG business with getting movies to customers over the net any company trying limitations will lose customers. My guess is they just want someone to finance their investions they have to make to stay competitive.
A game provider could have installed those plans long ago, but they know that to do so would be to cut themself out of the market because other mmorpgs would continue to support their sustainable monthly subscription services which are easier to sell to their consumers.
